Religion as a Conversation Starter by Ina Merdjanova,Patrice Brodeur Pdf

Religion as a Conversation Starter is the first comprehensive analysis of the present state of interreligious dialogue for peacebuilding in Southeast Europe. It is based on empirically grounded and policy-oriented research, carried out throughout the Balkans. The study maps recent interreligious relations in this part of the world, throwing light on both the achievements and challenges of interreligious dialogue for peacebuilding in particular, and offering a set of up-to-date policy recommendations, whilst contributing to a greater understanding of the local particularities and how they relate to broader trends transnationally. Interreligious dialogue has been a central tool in the continuous international efforts to promote peaceful living together in multicultural and multireligious societies. This fascinating monograph explores the place of interreligious dialogue as a primary method in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, and will be of interest to scholars of religious and peace studies, as well as those who advocate and carry out organized interventions in religion-related spheres.

Intercultural Education: Kosovo Stories of Struggle and Resilience by Cameron White,Blerim Saqipi Pdf

“Intercultural Education: Kosovo Stories of Struggle and Resilience” offers stories that challenge traditional conceptions regarding often unknown or ignored histories. The efforts and fortitude of Kosovo and its people provide a thought-provoking case study to learn from history. Kosovo still suffers from issues of poverty, development, and global recognition. The ongoing story of education in Kosovo comes alive with educators sharing individual perspectives regarding their struggles and resolve as students, teachers and parents. Although the focus is on Kosovo, the hope is that an intercultural awareness arises in place of the traditional international understanding. Celebrating culture, perspective, difference, and similarity is a primary focus of this book, which aspires to encourage readers to build bridges through intercultural education. This collection will be of interest both to faculty, students, researchers, and scholars in education and cultural studies, and to members of international education organizations.

Publishing in Yugoslavia's Successor States by Michael Biggins,Janet Crayne Pdf

From the Editor's Foreword: “Without any doubt, the 1990s will long be remembered as the decade of Yugoslavia's prolonged disintegration. A virtual blueprint of the conflict is accessible to anyone in a position to track the independent print media that were then emerging in Yugoslavia's various republics.” Publishing in Yugoslavia's Successor States presents the results of extensive tracking and research in that area. You'll learn how weekly independent news magazines such as Mladina in Slovenia, Danas in Croatia, and, later, Vreme in Serbia courageously documented the centrifugal political forces at work in Yugoslavia at the time. Independent daily newspapers, often located in provincial cities away form the centers of political control, pursued similar policies, adhering to high standards of objective political coverage. The periodical press also weighed in over time with more reflective assessments of the area's evolving political crisis and recommendations for managing it. Finally, as Yugoslavia's old communist paradigm of information management gradually lost control, the market gave rise to numerous tabloid weeklies and dailies that banked on nationalism and fear, serving as handmaidens to media-savvy demagogues and helping to rekindle past rivalries. Publishing in Yugoslavia's Successor States will take you on a turbulent tour of this vital industry struggling to survive and thrive in a war-torn land.

Under a Feathered Sky by Ade Clewlow Pdf

Lieutenant Colonel Clewlow's revealing first-hand account offers an honest and fascinating insight into the dramatic events of 2008/09 when he was deployed to Kosovo to be NATO's eyes and ears inside the Kosovo Protection Corps (the KPC) - Kosovo's revered civil emergency organisation. Acting as a mentor, advisor and confidante to its senior leadership, during one of the most profound periods of change in Kosovo's turbulent history, he faced a plethora of challenges. During his six-month tour of duty, this army officer, husband and father was torn between a commitment to make a difference to the lives of the people of Kosovo, and balancing his family life back in England. Immersed in Kosovo's rich culture, and operating in an unpredictable security environment, this deeply personal and candid memoir shows the lines he had to cross, and the risks he felt compelled to take, that ultimately led to the heart of the country's political elite. Caught in the middle of an intense battle of wills between the KFOR commanders and the Kosovan Generals leading the KPC, Clewlow had a stark choice; follow his orders from his KFOR command team, or discreetly side with the Kosovan leadership in order to shape events for the benefit of the KPC, putting his career and his reputation at risk in the process. This book paints a vivid picture of what it is like to work for NATO in a highly politicised environment, amongst a divided international community exposing a clash of cultures, and with local politicians pursuing their own agendas. Under A Feathered Sky offers a unique insight into NATO's role in newly independent Kosovo, a country nestled in Europe's most unstable and politically fragile region. "This fascinating and highly readable book unpacks the reality of post conflict dynamics like no other I have encountered." - General The Lord Richards of Herstmonceux GCB CBE DSO "Entertaining, gripping at times, and recommended reading..." - Pieter Feith, International Civilian Representative for Kosovo

Humanitarian Military Intervention by Taylor B. Seybolt Pdf

Military intervention in a conflict without a reasonable prospect of success is unjustifiable, especially when it is done in the name of humanity. Couched in the debate on the responsibility to protect civilians from violence and drawing on traditional 'just war' principles, the centralpremise of this book is that humanitarian military intervention can be justified as a policy option only if decision makers can be reasonably sure that intervention will do more good than harm. This book asks, 'Have past humanitarian military interventions been successful?' It defines success as saving lives and sets out a methodology for estimating the number of lives saved by a particular military intervention. Analysis of 17 military operations in six conflict areas that were thedefining cases of the 1990s-northern Iraq after the Gulf War, Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, Kosovo and East Timor-shows that the majority were successful by this measure. In every conflict studied, however, some military interventions succeeded while others failed, raising the question, 'Why have some past interventions been more successful than others?' This book argues that the central factors determining whether a humanitarian intervention succeeds are theobjectives of the intervention and the military strategy employed by the intervening states. Four types of humanitarian military intervention are offered: helping to deliver emergency aid, protecting aid operations, saving the victims of violence and defeating the perpetrators of violence. Thefocus on strategy within these four types allows an exploration of the political and military dimensions of humanitarian intervention and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each of the four types.Humanitarian military intervention is controversial. Scepticism is always in order about the need to use military force because the consequences can be so dire. Yet it has become equally controversial not to intervene when a government subjects its citizens to massive violation of their basic humanrights. This book recognizes the limits of humanitarian intervention but does not shy away from suggesting how military force can save lives in extreme circumstances.
