The Complete Novels of Henry James - All 24 Books in One Edition by Henry James Pdf

The Portrait of a Lady is one of James's most popular long novels, and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who in "affronting her destiny", finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. "The Wings of the Dove" tells the story of Milly Theale, an American heiress stricken with a serious disease, and her effect on the people around her. Some of these people befriend Milly with honorable motives, while others are more self-interested. "The American" is an uneasy combination of social comedy and melodrama concerning the adventures and misadventures of Christopher Newman, an essentially good-hearted but rather gauche American businessman on his first tour of Europe. Table of Contents: Confidence Roderick Hudson The Ambassadors The American The Awkward Age The Bostonians The Europeans The Golden Bowl The Other House The Outcry The Portrait of a Lady The Princess Casamassima The Reverberator The Sacred Fount The Spoils of Poynton The Tragic Muse The Whole Family The Wings of the Dove Washington Square Watch and Ward What Maisie Knew The Ivory Tower (Unfinished) The Sense of the Past (Unfinished) Henry James (1843–1916) was an American-British writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism.

Notes from Underground & The House of the Dead by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Pdf

Notes from Underground presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done? The second part of the book is called "Apropos of the Wet Snow", and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator. It is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. The House of the Dead is a semi-autobiographical novel, which portrays the life of convicts in a Siberian prison camp. The novel has also been published under the titles Memoirs from the House of The Dead and Notes from the Dead House (or Notes from a Dead House). The book is a loosely-knit collection of facts, events and philosophical discussion organized by "theme" rather than as a continuous story. Dostoyevsky himself spent four years in exile in such a camp following his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the characters of the convicts. Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist and philosopher. His literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature.

Further Chronicles of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery Pdf

Lucy Maud Montgomery is best known for her "Anne" series, starting with "Anne of Green Gables." A lifelong writer, Montgomery wrote her first poem at nine years old. Many of her stories, and the characters within them, were written from an autobiographical stance. "Further Chronicles of Avonlea," published in 1920, is a sequel to her "Chronicles of Avonlea." This sequel created a great deal of controversy as it was published without the consent of the author, and led to a nine-year-long legal battle between Montgomery and her publishers, L. C. Page & Co., from which Montgomery won $18,000. This collection includes: "Aunt Cynthia's Persian Cat," "The Materializing of Cecil," "Her Father's Daughter," "Jane's Baby," "The Dream-Child," "The Brother Who Failed," "The Return of Hester," "The Little Brown Book of Miss Emily," "Sara's Way," "The Son of his Mother," "The Education of Betty," "In Her Selfless Mood," "The Conscience Case of David Bell," "Only a Common Fellow," and "Tannis of the Flats."
