The First World War brought women into the British labour force in a way that had never been previously possible. Before the War, it was assumed that women would leave work on marriage and that domestic work, husbands and children would become their full-time preoccupation. Paid work was not supposed to be important to them, as it was only temporary and they were not expected to be interested in finding work with higher wages or a career structure.
