The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver Pdf

New York Times Bestseller • A Best Book of the Year: New York Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times, and Kansas City Star • Winner of the Orange Prize “Breathtaking. . . dazzling.” — New York Times Book Review “Her best novel yet. . . both epic and deeply personal. . . . This is thought-provoking, and potentially thought-changing, historical fiction at its best.” — Dallas Morning News In this powerfully imagined, provocative novel, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Barbara Kingsolver takes us on an epic journey from the Mexico of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo to the America of Pearl Harbor, FDR, and J. Edgar Hoover. The Lacuna is the poignant story of a man pulled between two nations as well as an unforgettable portrait of the artist—and of art itself. Born in the United States, raised in Mexico, Harrison Shepherd lacks a sense of home in either. Life is whatever he learns from housekeepers who put him to work in the kitchen; from errands he runs in the streets; and, one fateful day, by mixing plaster for famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. He discovers a passion for Aztec history and the exotic, imperious artist Frida Kahlo, who will become his lifelong friend. When he goes to work for Lev Trotsky, an exiled political leader fighting for his life, Shepherd inadvertently casts his lot with art and revolution, newspaper headlines and howling gossip, and a risk of terrible violence. Meanwhile, to the north, the United States will soon be caught up in the internationalist goodwill of World War II. There, in the land of his birth, Shepherd believes he might remake himself in America’s hopeful image and claim a voice of his own. Through darkening years, political winds continue to toss him between north and south in a plot that turns many times on the unspeakable breach—the lacuna—between truth and public presumption. With deeply compelling characters, a vivid sense of place, and a clear grasp of how history and public opinion can shape a life, Kingsolver has created a rich and daring work of literature, establishing its author as one of the most provocative and important of her time.

The traumatized central character of J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace is provocatively reimagined in this “surprising, subtle, and deeply challenging” novel (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Two years ago, Lucy Lurie was the victim of an act of sexual violence that devastated her life. Afterwards, she becomes obsessed with the author John Coetzee, whose acclaimed novel turned her brutal assault into a literary metaphor. Withdrawn and fearful of crowds, Lucy nonetheless makes occasional forays into the world of men in her search for Coetzee himself. She means to confront him. The Lucy in his novel, Disgrace, is passive and almost entirely lacking agency. Lucy means to right the record, for she is the lacuna that Coetzee left in his novel—the missing piece of the puzzle. Lucy plans to put herself back in the story, to assert her agency and identity. For Lucy Lurie will be no man’s lacuna. Lacuna is both a powerful feminist reply to the book considered to be Coetzee’s masterwork, and the moving story of one woman’s attempt to reclaim her identity after trauma. Twenty-five years ago, the hand of fate marked four newborns and sent them to the four corners of the Great Kingdoms. They were schooled and trained as rulers of their lands in preparation for the Golden Eclipse ceremony: a festival to celebrate a thousand years of peace and prosperity since the Great War. Crow, ruler of Northlands, a skilled swordsman and expert tactician, is as reclusive and stoic as the mountains that surround him. Tancho has spent his life in strict discipline, governing the Westlands with a fair mind and gentle hand. Quiet and unassuming, yet lethal in combat, he is the embodiment of the waters he lives by. Yet the same hand of fate unknowingly linked Tancho to Crow in ways they cannot comprehend. Ruled by the stars, the brother sun and the two sister moons above them, and marked by an alchemical sorcery as old as time, their destinies were never their own. As the eclipse draws near and the festival begins, word comes of another threat. Invaders from unknown lands bring a war no one was prepared for, and Crow and Tancho must decide on which side of the battle line they stand. In life or death, their destinies will see them joined either way. ~ Lacuna is a 92,000 word story of swords and sorcery, action and adventure, and romance.

Lacuna by Sean Rian Pdf

Lacuna, defined in the Oxford Dictionary as a Hiatus, blank, missing portion, empty part, seemed to be the picture of the world to J, whom on the death of his exhausted mother, becomes the sole carer of his aged father who is in an advanced state of Alzheimers, in a confused, agitated South London where mobile phones and iPods, both addictive and sedative, are background Muzak to more serious displays of road rage, street rage and drug activity. Encountering a Health Service whose professionals find it as difficult as him to reach down into the heart of this unseen, ungraspable disease he is forced to seek innovative ways of dealing with the daily problems. A chance meeting at his local pub provides him with an informal support group. Three men that he meets in the late evening several times a week become to him the Three Wise Men, affectionately abbreviated to TWM. ln the third year when his father takes a serious fall they enter into a world of medicine which is advanced and competent but where 'nursing', has become clerical rather than physical, and where 'care' has been marginalised by pseudo professionalism. Whilst grim duty never goes away what began as a five year retreat from Moscow becomes in part a rewarding internal Odyssey. A gradual retrospective view of his father's early imperceptible decline does bring a degree of understanding and the lifelong unbroken friendship between them is reconfirmed.

Humanity has rebuilt on the world of Velsharn, forging the colony of Eden from the ashes of Earth. On Velsharn's verdant soil children are born, alliances are made and for a time, peace reigns. In high orbit, the debris of an entire Toralii fleet stands as mute testament to humanity's sovereignty; their right to this planet is unquestioned. Above the TFR Beijing, now the centrepiece in a flourishing city, the inky void of space is eerily silent. As Commander Melissa Liao recovers from her ordeals, the universe continues its roiling machinations unhindered by her suffering. The end is coming, but before the final chapter in the Lacuna series begins, the stage must be set and the players must be in their places. So much work is left unfinished and Melissa Liao has more trials to endure before her pain is over. Before the end of war and steel, Eternity awaits. Lacuna: The Spectre of Oblivion by David Adams Pdf

The words of a construct, an artificial mind, ring truer than ever. Humanity has angered a powerful foe and cannot weather the growing storm. The Toralii are coming. But instead of warships, the Toralii Alliance send an ambassador to the Sol system. The message it brings is a startling, marked departure from all other contact with the species... and one that heralds a shift in the balance of power in the Milky Way, the most significant in hundreds of years. The Toralii face a larger threat. A something their ships cannot catch, their weapons cannot touch and gravimetric interference cannot stop. The Toralii, for the first time in centuries, know the crushing grip of fear. The TFR Beijing must face an old enemy, an enemy who has not been idle; an imperfect being whose ambition seems matched only by his capabilities. Liao's child is born into an era of war and fear, and the spectre of oblivion looms over all mankind. Book three of the Lacuna series. Lacuna: The Ashes of Humanity by David Adams Pdf

Humans thought that they could stand amongst the older races. They believed, in their hubris, that the perils of interstellar travel could be mastered within a single generation. That they would be spared the wrath of the Toralii. Now humanity lies in ashes. The cradle of our civilization, Earth, is nothing more than a charred husk, a dead world in an empty solar system in an unremarkable corner of the galaxy. The war is over. We lost. Captain Melissa Liao and the remaining band of Humans, numbering barely in the tens of thousands, hold the future of their entire species in their hands. They must settle a new world, encounter friends and enemies new and old, and plant the seeds of hope in the ashes of humanity. Lacuna: The Requiem of Steel by David Adams Pdf

Peace in our time. The Toralii guns are silent. Humanity’s home of Velsharn is secure. There are no more battles. No more wars. The machinations of a dying man have traded a single life for a species; Captain Melissa Liao’s world is four iron walls and pain, but her suffering buys life for mankind. Her legacy is one of struggle, selflessness, and sacrifice. Held in the grasp of the Toralii Alliance, she takes little comfort in this. Is this the swansong for war, for steel and blood and gunpowder? Is this the price of peace? Amongst the crew of the TFR Beijing, the TFR Tehran, and the TFR Washington, a chorus rings: No one gets left behind. The climactic sixth, and final, book of the Lacuna series. New Fleece on Life: A Silo Story & Lacuna Crossover by David Adams Pdf

"A brilliant introduction to David Adams's immediately likable characters and wonderful writing, New Fleece on Life is the perfect What-If story. Anyone fond of happier endings should give it a read; anyone eager to catch a star on the rise should follow David's writing career closely." - Hugh Howey, author of Wool and the Silo series. One day, on Kboards, I started a Lacuna/Wool crossover as a joke. It was literally a few lines thrown together from the top of my head and a poorly photoshopped cover. It was one of many joke threads and I had no idea where it was going. The readers--including Hugh himself--wanted more, so I posted more. And they kept wanting more. So I posted more. And they asked for more. And here we are. Wool and the canonical tale of Holston is over, but this is what could have happened if everyone involved lost their minds. In the true tradition of terrible fanfiction shipping, New Fleece on Life is poorly written and poorly structured, everyone acts wildly out of character and, in the interests of the 'ship', all previous emotional and romantic entanglements are disregarded so that all involved can throw themselves into a flimsily constructed, hasty and poorly thought out fling with little thought to the consequences. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed, in a sincere and genuine way, writing it.

Lacuna is a collection of poems I have written throughout the years. Lacuna, meaning a blank space or missing part, is a book for young women struggling to make sense of everything they feel. My hope with this book is to help people like me feel comfortable in their vulnerability and to look at life with a deeper view.

LACUNA by Erin Hosfield Pdf

You can abandon your past… but your secrets won’t abandon you. As a tattooist, it’s easy keeping people at arm’s length. Distract them with questions, and when they inevitably ask their own, reply vaguely. Lie. When the lies pile up, disappear. It’s a cycle Lynna’s all too familiar with. Staying guarded is a necessity, but what keeps her safe is also what keeps her lonely. It’s an empty existence, hiding behind lies, and she wishes she was someone else. Someone not burdened with a secret. A year into her most recent move, the loneliness bleeds into her work, and she admits a few truths. At the insistence of a client, she explores the city’s night scene, where she meets the enigmatic Rhys. As the months progress, so do her feelings for him, despite the risks of getting too close. When a dangerous encounter leads her straight into his arms, she abandons her past in exchange for a new beginning, only her secret refuses to be abandoned. With her life hanging by a thread, she’s forced to confess, but the secret that will change everything isn’t hers. Set in an alternate present, LACUNA opens with Lynna’s transition to an atmospheric northwestern city. Derailed from what she’s built, she finds herself immersed in the lush world of medicinal horticulture, enveloped in the kind of close-knit relationships she always craved. Her fantasy has become reality, but not without caveat. As she plunges further into this new life, she begins to expose the conflicting threads holding it together, and what she discovers will bring more questions than answers. Cover art: Erin Hosfield
