Ladder in the Water and Other Stories by Feroz Faisal Dawson Pdf

Malaysian youth, just like others their age around the world, bond during carefree times, only to arrive at the cusp of adulthood to be confronted with weightier matters such as death, marriage, and politics. In his posthumous collection of short stories, Feroz Faisal Dawson shares nine tales that highlight an eclectic group of characters poised to face emotional starts and stops as a generation comes of age together and takes different paths in life. As a juvenile vandal expresses political dissidence, a young man on a trip to the market for his mother stops to listen to a political rant that proves his indifference. After a tragic car accident, all who are left behind grieve in different ways as they face the grim reality inside a coffin. On New Year's Eve, relationships begin to show signs of strain as honor, pride, love, and hate surround a celebration. Ladder in the Water and Other Stories offers an unforgettable glimpse into a generation of Malaysian youth as they grow up and bravely face all of life's challenges-each in their own remarkable way.

Evil Water by Ian Watson Pdf

In his fourth short-story collection, Watson again demonstrates the extraordinary scope of his imagination. The title story has ancient witchcraft meeting complacent modern suburbia in a tale of spine-chilling horror, while 'When the Timegate Failed' casts an unexpected light in the dangers of space travel and man's powers of self-delusion. Alien matters of a different kind crop up in 'Windows', in which mysterious artefacts found on Mars prove to be something of a problem for their chic human owners. Evil Water is a highly inventive collection which is a delight to read.

Noah the Water Carrier and Other Stories by Joe Lumer Pdf

"A shadow moved down the muddy road in pale moonlight. Its steps were urgent. A decision had been made, a course determined. The hours of deliberation were over " Noah the Water Carrier is a collection of short stories whose setting is "T", a small city in Poland in the 1930's. The stories reflect the lives of Jews and Gentiles living together in a time and place that have disappeared forever. It was a time of change and even of optimism, before the Holocaust cast its vast net over an unprepared and unwitting people.

The Secret Sharer and Other Stories (International Student Edition) (Norton Critical Editions) by Joseph Conrad Pdf

This Norton Critical Edition includes four stories—two set on stormy seas, two on calm seas, all four based on the same incident—that speak to each other in interesting ways. The stories in this Norton Critical Edition maintain the connection and sequencing that Joseph Conrad saw among them. In his “Author’s Note” to ‘Twixt Land and Sea, Conrad writes of his two “Calm-pieces” (“The Secret Sharer” and The Shadow-Line) and his two “Storm-pieces” (The Nigger of the “Narcissus” and “Typhoon”). This edition is based on the first English book edition for the stories and the first American edition for the “Author’s Note” for The Shadow-Line, “Typhoon,” and “The Secret Sharer.” The stories are accompanied by explanatory annotations, a note on the texts (including a list of textual emendations), and a preface. “Backgrounds and Contexts” brings together relevant correspondence and contemporary reviews from both British and American sources. Also included are documents related to Conrad’s sources for the stories, among them Charles Arthur Sankey’s “Ordeal of the Cutty Sark: A True Story of Mutiny, Murder on the High Seas.” To help readers navigate, the editor includes a glossary of nautical terms as well as diagrams of the kinds of ships that appear in the stories. “Criticism” includes fifteen essays representing both new and established voices. The essays are arranged by story, with the focus on Conrad’s major themes—colonialism, narrative, gender, and race. Albert J. Guerard, Lillian Nayder, Mark D. Larabee, Fredric Jameson, F. R. Leavis, and John G. Peters are among the contributors. A chronology of Conrad’s life and work and a selected bibliography are also included.

Bad Water and Other Stories of the Alaskan Panhandle by Tom Hunt Pdf

Bad Water and Other Stories of the Alaskan Panhandle is a book of short stories set in southeast Alaska on an archipelago about the size of Florida. There are not many people and most of them live in a few small scattered towns. Some live in the more remote areas of the thousands of miles of coastline and hundreds of backwater bays and coves, making a living at whatever is available. Alaska is a place where geography and weather dictate human behavior, and that could mean eating the same dried beans, rice, deer meat and fish for a good part of the year. With no freeways and little law enforcement (a 911call means contacting the Coast Guard), people must learn to be self-sufficient, especially in times of emergencies. Sometimes people make their own solutions to solve problems. If a solution doesn't work and you're still alive, it's time to try another! The folks that live in this remote part of Alaska do whatever it takes to make it work. There's a freedom that can't be had in civilization, but the price is high. These are their stories.

Murder on the Einstein Express and Other Stories by Harun Šiljak Pdf

This collection of stories touches upon many genres: Normed Trek is a clever and witty Alice-in-Wonderland-type narrative set in the realm of mathematical analysis, The Cantor Trilogy is a dystopia about the consequences of relying upon computer-based mathematical proofs, In Search of Future Time bears the flavor of Tales from Arabian Nights set in the future, and – last but not least - Murder on the Einstein Express is a short, non-technical primer on probabilities and modern classical physics, disguised as a detective story. Written primarily for an audience with some background or a strong interest in mathematics, physics and computer science (in particular artificial intelligence), these stories explore the boundaries between science and fiction in a refreshingly unconventional fashion. In the Afterthoughts the author provides some further insights and annotations.

The Wounded & Other Stories About Sons and Fathers by Graham Leask, Ian Pdf

A British writer's first collection of stories, set in a newly independent India, contemporary England, and the American South. In the title story, told from a mother's point of view, a teenaged son has been taken over with alcoholic binges; he vomits; he loses all cognizance of himself. As we learn more of the father, we find that he, too, is an alcoholic, a chain-smoker, and not far from death. The piece ends on a note of misogyny and violent helplessness, as if to imply like father, like son. Alcoholism, violence, class and racial prejudice figure throughout these stories, which are often garish and melodramatic, like the tale of a Britisher gone completely to seed in India (``Bombay Morning''). Leask makes it clear that he's brought his woes upon himself. The same self-destructive impulse grows a bit maudlin in ``Smoking Section,'' about a man who can't pay his bill at a sleazy diner. But in ``Daddy's Eyes'' and the fine ``Piggybank,'' Leask offers a more reflective view: in the first, an overworked, unhappily married father, whose own childhood was miserable, manages nonetheless to enter his small son's world with empathy and love; in the second, a young boy views his repulsive family's bankruptcy and abusive ways with the determination to do better. The question in many of these stories may be whether alcohol has led to unpleasant behavior, or whether these are unpleasant people who become even more unpleasant when they drink. Accomplished, but to trade upon some mythic eternal wound among men seems facile. The women here are no better. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
