Lamps, Pitchers and Trumpets by Edwin Paxton Hood Pdf

Excerpt from Lamps, Pitchers and Trumpets: Lectures on the Vocation of the Preacher Lamps, Pitchers, and Trumpets. Have taken a text from the wonderful stoiy of that great ancient judge and warrior, Gideon. Do you not remember, when Gideon divided his three hundred men into three companies, he put a trumpet in every mans right hand and a pitcher in the other, and a lamp within the pitcher? And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. Whe7i I blow with a trumpet, blow yc with your trumpets and exclaim. The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon. So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried. The sword of the Lord and of Gideon. And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled. And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lokd set every mans sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host. The history seems to me to be a parable of the foolishness of preaching; an illustration of the genius and the success of the pulpit its method and its power. Delphi Collected Works of Gregory I (Illustrated) by Gregory I Pdf

Saint Gregory the Great was Pope from 590 to 604, launching the famous Gregorian Mission, the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons of England to Christianity. The epithet “the Great” reflects Gregory’s status as a celebrated writer as well as a ruler. The fourth and final of the traditional Latin Fathers of the Church, Gregory is now regarded as the first exponent of a truly medieval, sacramental spirituality. His Commentary on Job and his handbook for rulers, Pastoral Rule, were extremely popular treatises throughout the middle ages, while the Dialogues feature a compelling life of Saint Benedict and his many miracles. Gregory’s works provided practical wisdom and enlightenment for the people of the Dark Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This comprehensive eBook presents Gregory the Great’s collected works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material.
