MISREADING SIGNS by Anonim Pdf

The aim of the following dissertation is an analysis of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass in regard to the uncanny and its relation to language. For the purpose of the study on the psychoanalytical concept of the uncanny in connection with linguistic theory, the most important theories have been evaluated in the first chapter of the dissertation, titled “The Concept of the Uncanny and its Relation to Language”. Afterwards the chapter “The Uncanny and Language in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass” applies the acquired theoretical framework to the two selected texts in order to understand the different ways in which Carroll manipulates language in order to create an uncanny atmosphere.

Lewis Carroll’s "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland". Language games and the problem of their translation by Anonim Pdf

Essay from the year 2019 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Iceland (Faculty of Humanities), course: Transformations of Classical Children’s Books, language: English, abstract: Lewis Carroll’s "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" is one of the great pioneering figures of nonsense fantasy and undoubtedly a classic of Victorian children’s and youth literature. To this day, the story fascinates not only young people, but also adult readers. One reason for the long-lasting success is the complexity of Alice, which allows viewing the plot from various perspectives, such as political, philosophical and even logical or physical perspectives. Therefore, it is not surprising that Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland after first being published in 1865, has never been out of print (cf. “What’s so wonderful about Alice?”). Another reason for this success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the language used and its humorous effect. The novel is embedded with both obvious and hidden wordplays, neologisms, syllogisms, well-known poems, nursery rhymes of the time and the assumption that word meanings can be chosen arbitrarily.

Lewis Carroll, "Alice in Wonderland" as a Work of Nonsense Fiction by Christin Maier Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Vechta (IKG), language: English, abstract: The following thesis is about “Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland as a Work of Nonsense Fiction”. Carroll’s masterpiece Alice in Wonderland, which includes both books, namely Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, does not only belong to the most popular English children’s books, but it is also regarded as a classic around the world. Especially in English-speaking countries, lines from the Alice books have been as often cited as lines from Shakespeare or the bible. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used the pseudonym “Lewis Carroll” for his writings, made up the tale Alice in Wonderland for his most-loved child-friend and muse Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boat trip on the River Thames. Lewis Carroll is known, next to Edward Lear, as one of the most famous Nonsense poets and writers. Moreover, it is claimed that he was the first author to introduce Nonsense into children’s literature, and as result, had a huge impact with his Alice books on English children’s literature. The split between the two personalities, namely the Victorian author Carroll and the Reverend and mathematician Dodgson, who taught at Christ Church, Oxford, has to be considered in order to get a better understanding of the Alice books as a Nonsense Work. This is exactly what will be done in this thesis. Firstly, there will be given a general overview on the author’s life. Secondly, the boat trip itself and with it the genesis of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There will be discussed. After that, a closer examination of the plot and its construction in both books will be given. In addition, similarities and differences will be shown between the construction of the plot of the first and the second Alice book. Furthermore, the characterization of the eponymous heroine “Alice” will be analyzed and will be regarded under Alice’s ability of imagination. A special focus will be on the Nonsense fiction as such. A definition of Literary Nonsense will be given and varieties of Literary Nonsense will be examined on the basis of the two Alice books. Additionally, Lewis Carroll’s well-known poem “Jabberwocky” in Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There will be analyzed as an example of Nonsense Fiction. In the context of the poem “Jabberwocky”, there has also to be looked on the still ubiquitous Humpty Dumpty, who is next to the Duchess, March Hare...

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll Pdf

In 1865, English author CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON (1832-1898), aka Lewis Carroll, wrote a fantastical adventure story for the young daughters of a friend. The adventures of Alice-named for one of the little girls to whom the book was dedicated-who journeys down a rabbit hole and into a whimsical underworld realm, instantly struck a chord with the British public, and then with readers around the world. Dodgson's playfulness-with language, with mathematical puzzles, with testy creatures such as the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts-still confounds and teases lovers of fantasy fiction today. Alice acolytes continue to unravel the book's strange riddles, and constantly find new meaning in the unexpected underlying themes, from the trials of early adolescence to the value of nonsense. The conundrums and delights of Alice ensures its ongoing influence over modern pop culture. This unabridged replica edition features the original illustrations by English artist SIR JOHN TENNIEL (1820-1914), and is a treasured addition to any library.

Ambiguity as a Source of Humor in Lewis Carroll’s "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" by Charlotte Bahr Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Würzburg, language: English, abstract: "But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ Alice remarked. ‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the Cat: ‘we’re all mad here. I‘m mad. You‘re mad." This quote captures like nothing else the essence of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book Alice in Wonderland. The story of a young girl getting bored during a hot summer day and slipping into a dreamland full of odd creatures has enchanted generations of children myself included. Alice is not a typical children’s book though, as it is quite multilayered, thanks to Carroll’s clever play with language. Carroll, common name Charles Lutwige Dodgson, was quite fond of using several stylistic devices like punning, to delight the young readership his stories were for. But I also noticed that he used ambiguity in quite a few instances. Many characters are very fond of ambiguity most prominently The Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle, Gryphon and the Red King. Carroll mostly uses ambiguity to create confusion through misunderstandings, mostly on Alice’s dispense, which in return tends to create a certain humor for the reader. In this seminar paper I will discuss Carroll’s use of ambiguity in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by analyzing several instances of it that appear throughout the novel. I will start out by defining ambiguity and in what ways ambiguity has been researched by other linguists and what results their studies produced. I am also going to explore the origins of Alice in Wonderland. How did Carroll come up with it? What kind of story is it? On the stylistic level I will examine what Carroll’s general stance on ambiguity was and how he used it to create both confusion and comedy? I will take a closer look at the different forms of ambiguity he employs and how characters react to the usage of it.

Running Out of Place by Caroline Dionne Pdf

"In architecture, meaning is also tied to its outer limits---to the polysemy of nonsense. Through one's experience of space, a stable and orderly building becomes heterogeneous, loaded with qualities and symbols. A sense of place emerges and meaning momentarily appears along the sinuous paths that run between bodily movements, thoughts, dreams, desire and words." --

Two Levels: Lewis Carroll's Alice Books as Children's Literature and Adult Fiction by Jessica Schweke Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,5, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, 23 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: When Charles Lutwidge Dodgson decided to publish his tale Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 under the pen name Lewis Carroll, he could not have known that this little girl's great experiences in Wonderland and also in the land behind the mirror in Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, published nearly a decade later, would become so popular. Meant as presents for two of his child-friends both books developed to a reading pleasure for children as well as for adults. Numerous theater plays and film adaptations of Alice's story definitely show its fantastic impact that it has maintained until today. However, besides different film versions there are of course also different interpretations of the tale itself. The availability of different readings in their collectivity suggests that the Alice books can be understood virtually completely only by adults in reference to these diverse and numerous aspects, which will be proven during the following examination. In the subsequent B.A.-thesis I will point out various factors which indicate that Carroll's Alice is not only a book for children, if not entirely meant for adults. The allusions to the author's own life as well as Victorian culture and especially Carroll's use of words and language for example require a preoccupation with these criteria which children generally would not show. Furthermore, adults have a completely different horizon of expectations when reading any piece of literature. This set of cultural standards, assumptions, and principles shape the way in which the reader evaluates and comprehends a book. "Such 'horizons' are subject to historical change, so that later generations of readers may see a very different range of meanings in the same work, and revalue it
