A History of The Anabaptists in Switzerland by Henry S. Burrage Pdf

To the history of the Anabaptists of Switzerland as little attention has been given as to that of the Anabaptists generally and, perhaps, even less. The Swiss Anabaptists had a part, however in the great movement, which, as Dorner says, extended through all Germany; from Swabia and Switzerland, along the Rhine to Holland and Friesland; from Bavaria, Middle Germany, Westphalia, and Saxony, as far as Holstein and though they were apparently defeated, the story of their heroic sufferings should be faithfully recorded.

Faith and Toleration by C. Arnold Snyder Pdf

In these lectures, C. Arnold Snyder offers an important historical study on the subject of religious toleration in the period of the Reformation, breaking new ground based on his own careful reading of Lutheran and Swiss Anabaptist sources. Snyder sheds new light on the nature of Swiss Anabaptism in the latter half of the sixteenth century, demonstrating that by the end of the century, the Anabaptists of Switzerland were no longer running from “the world” but actively engaging those in power and courageously lobbying for religious toleration. This historical inquiry also provides an occasion for contemporary reflection on faith and toleration today, in the context of rising social, political and religious tensions.

Profiles of Anabaptist Women by C. Arnold Snyder,Linda A. Huebert Hecht Pdf

Annotation Examines women who chose to risk persecution and martyrdom to pursue the radical Protestant movement during the Reformation. Most of the 34 essays focus on a single woman, but others discuss such groups as women in the Hutterite song book, women in Tiron who recanted, and women leaders in Augsburg. The sections begin with introductions to the context of Anabaptist women in Switzerland, southern Germany and Austria, and northern Germany and the Netherlands. The Anabaptist Story by William R. Estep Pdf

Four hundred seventy years ago the Anabaptist movement was launched with the inauguration of believer's baptism and the formation of the first congregation of the Swiss Brethren in Zurich, Switzerland. This standard introduction to the history of Anabaptism by noted church historian William R. Estep offers a vivid chronicle of the rise and spread of teachings and heritage of this important stream in Christianity. This third edition of The Anabaptist Story has been substantially revised and enlarged to take into account the numerous Anabaptist sources that have come to light in the last half-century as well as the significant number of monographs and other scholarly works on Anabaptist themes that have recently appeared. Estep challenges a number of assumptions held by contemporary historians and offers fresh insights into the Anabaptist movement.

Sources Of Swiss Anabaptism by Konrad Grebel Pdf

The 170 letters and documents in this volume portray how Conrad Grebel, a bright young Swiss patriot, became a fervent, influential leader of the sixteenth-century Anabaptist movement. The editor calls the book “a drama with five acts, prologue, and epilogue” with a cast of 107 characters. The main characters are Grebel himself and Huldrych Zwingli, the vicar at the Grossmünster in Zurich. The climax of the drama comes in January 1525 when Grebel performs the first rebaptisms, signaling the founding of a new church and the rejection of the Anabaptists by Zwingli. “These letters and documents are not published for scholars only,” states the editor, “but for all seekers and believers.” This is the fourth volume in the Classics of the Radical Reformation, a series of Anabaptist and Free Church documents translated and annotated under the direction of the Institute of Mennonite Studies.

Becoming Anabaptist by J. Denny Weaver Pdf

When Becoming Anabaptist appeared in 1987, it was the first major study to incorporate the new history of multiple beginnings and a diverse Anabaptism into a synthesis of meanings for the late 20th century. J. Denny Weaver’s attempt was welcomed and widely acclaimed by scholars and by church leaders alike. In this second edition, Weaver provides a “masterful treatment of his beloved Anabaptist vision” (William Willimon, in the Foreword).

History of the Anabaptists in Switzerland (Classic Reprint) by Henry Sweetser Burrage Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Anabaptists in Switzerland Too little attention has been given to the Anabaptists of the sixteenth century. No one among us would be satisfied with a history of the Reformation in Germany, prepared by Dr. Eck, or any other of Luther's opponents; but works concerning the Anabaptists, written by their bitterest enemies, are received by writers of almost every name as trustworthy history. Books of this character are cited as authorities in Anabaptist history. In his As to Roger Williams, Dr. Dexter cites a number of works from which, as he tells us, the early settlers of New England derived their prejudice against the Anabaptists; and he adds for the benefit of his readers, that if one would "complete his knowledge of the subject," he would do well to consult the following works: "Catrou's Histoire des Anabaptistes tant en Allemagne, Hollande, qu' Angleterre etc., Paris, 1615; J. Gastiu's De Anabaptismi exordio, erroribus, historus abominandis, confutationibus adjectis, etc., Basileae, 1544; Melanchthon's Advetsus Anabaptistas judicium, etc., J. H. Ottiu's Annales Anabaptistici, hoc est, Historia universalis de Anabaptistarum origine, progressu, factionibus, et schismatis, etc., Basileae, 1672; and Kerssenbrock's Geschichte der Wiedertauffer zu Munster, etc., 1771." Documents of Brotherly Love, Vol. II 1710-1711 by James W. Lowry,David J. Rempel Smucker,John L. Ruth Pdf

Published eight years after the first volume in Documents of Brotherly Love, this second volume continues to refine the narrative of " Dutch Aid to Swiss Anabaptists." In contrast to the first volume's scope, spreading across seven decades following 1635, the correspondence of the present volume dates from only a two year span, 1710-1711. Readers now gain further access to materials archived ( primarily in Amsterdam) beginning in the seventeenth century. Though most were carefully inventoried in the late nineteenth century, and microfilmed (poorly) in the twentieth, they were only selectively consulted and quoted by historians. The international story unfolding through this epistolary conversation was thus only partial represented in either scholarly or popular history. The unusual strength of the Christian bond powering this episode of "Brotherly Love" is evident beyond its north-south dynamics, in its eastward reach to Swiss-deriving Mennonite Communities south of Heidelberg, or westward to Germantown in Pennsylvania, from which a nascent Mennonite community looked to both Dutch and Palatine leaders for advice. Readers can thus newly trace the arc of brotherly aid from an insecure Bernese haystack to donated land in the Netherlands in 1711 or a home carved from the woods of Pennsylvania in 1718.

Dirk Philips, A Sixteenth-Century Dutch Anabaptist by Insung Jeon Pdf

The purpose of this book is to shed light on the thought of Dirk Philips, who was a Mennonite leader in the sixteenth century, and to argue that his various doctrines, including his Christology, ecclesiology, soteriology, and anthropology, are interrelated with his view of the visible church. This book explains that Dirk Philips’ view of the visible church is much closer to the ecclesiology of Augustine’s tradition rather than to the ecclesiology of the Donatists’ tradition. Although Dirk Philips had excellent theological abilities and he was a leader who made a significant contribution to the development of the Mennonites camp, he did not receive much attention in the study of Anabaptists, and there has not been much research on this sixteenth-century Mennonite leader. Thus, this book will help you discover a great sixteenth-century leader who has been forgotten in church history. Is it true that the Radical Reformers are disciples of Donatus, that the Anabaptists thought that the failed believers cannot be forgiven because the church is a gathering of pure souls? This book will probe the idea that the Radical Reformation is closer to the ecclesiology of Augustine’s tradition than to the ecclesiology of the Donatists’ tradition.
