Latin Prosody Made Easy by John Carey Pdf

Excerpt from Latin Prosody Made Easy: Or Rules and Authorities for the Quantity of Final Syllables in General, and of the Increments of Nouns and Verbs, Interspersed With Occasional Observations and Conjectures on the Pronunciation of the Ancient Greeks and Romans How far the following sheets may prove acceptable to the amateurs of Latin poetry, experience alone can determine. The motives which induced me to the publication were these - Though not employed in the public instruction of youth, I have been in the habit of occasionally instructing one or two private pupils during the intervals of leisure from my other occupations: and, in the course of my practice, I have sometimes been requested by gentlemen who either had finished or were actually engaged in their academic course, to aid them in acquiring a knowledge of prosody and versification, which they had neglected in the early period of their studies, or had since forgotten. To facilitate the acquisition, my first step in every such case was to provide the applicant with a set of tables similar to those which stand at the conclusion of this volume. Contrastive Linguistics by Ping Ke Pdf

This book serves as an introduction to contrastive linguistics - the synchronic study of two or more languages, with the aim of discovering their differences and similarities, especially the former, and applying these discoveries to related areas of language study and practice. It discusses the principles and methods, and contrasts English, Chinese, German, and other languages at phonological, lexical, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic levels, focusing more on the useful insights contrastive analysis provides into real-world problems in fields such as applied linguistics, translation and translation studies, English or Chinese as a foreign language, and communication than on the discipline itself.

Text and Genre in Reconstruction by Willard McCarty Pdf

In this broad-reaching, multi-disciplinary collection, leading scholars investigate how the digital medium has altered the way we read and write text. In doing so, it challenges the very notion of scholarship as it has traditionally been imagined. Incorporating scientific, socio-historical, materialist and theoretical approaches, this rich body of work explores topics ranging from how computers have affected our relationship to language, whether the book has become an obsolete object, the nature of online journalism, and the psychology of authorship. The essays offer a significant contribution to the growing debate on how digitization is shaping our collective identity, for better or worse. Text and Genre in Reconstruction will appeal to scholars in both the humanities and sciences and provides essential reading for anyone interested in the changing relationship between reader and text in the digital age.

A History of Old English Literature by Robert D. Fulk,Christopher M. Cain Pdf

A HISTORY OF OLD ENGLISH LITERATURE A History of Old English Literature has been significantly revised to provide an unequivocal response to the renewed historicism in medieval studies. Focusing on the production and reception of Old English texts and on their relation to Anglo-Saxon history and culture, this new edition covers an exceptionally broad array of genres. These range from riddles and cryptograms to allegory, liturgical texts, and romance, as well as lyric poetry and heroic legend. The authors also integrate discussions of Anglo-Latin texts, crucial to understanding the development of Old English literature. This second edition incorporates extensive reference to scholarship that has evolved over the past decade, with new chapters on both Anglo-Saxon manuscripts and on incidental and marginal texts. There is expanded treatment throughout, including increased coverage of legal texts and scientific and scholastic texts. The book concludes with a retrospective outline of the reception of Anglo-Saxon literature and culture in subsequent periods.
