Lawn Tennis by H. W. Slocum Pdf

Excerpt from Lawn Tennis: In Our Own Country "But this the tennis court keeper knows better than I." - King Henry IV. When Lawn Tennis was first played in England, some years before its introduction in this country, it differed from the game of to-day mainly in the dimensions of the court and net, and the shape or construction of the implements used in playing. If we are to believe what we read, it was the crude invention of an English officer, who, in all probability, was seeking for a game which would not only satisfy the English love of manly sport, but also afford an easy medium of exercise for himself and one or two of his friends. Excerpt from Lawn Tennis: In Our Own Country Any changes in Lawn Tennis, which the future may bring about, will probably be changes in the game itself and not in the court, upon which, or the implements with which, the game is played. There is every reason to believe that a court of 78 feet in length and 27 feet in width, and a net 3 feet high, present the best combination possible to induce Speedy play and accurate placing. The first of the -laws of Lawn Tennis, as adopted by the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, specifies the dimensions of the court and height of the net as follows. Historical Dictionary of Tennis by John Grasso Pdf

The sport of tennis has been played in one form or another for more than 800 years. It can trace its roots to games played by monks in the 12th century. Through the years the game has evolved from one in which the ball was struck with the hands to the modern game in which rackets are used to propel the ball in excess of 150 miles per hour. From the sport of the elite to the sport played by elite athletes, tennis has grown immensely in the past 135 years and it remains one of the few sporting pastimes thatis played extensively by people of all ages and all nationalities. The Historical Dictionary of Tennis presents a comprehensive history of the game through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, photos, and over 500 cross-referenceddictionary entries on places, teams, terminology, and people, including Arthur Ashe, Björn Borg, Don Budge, Chris Evert, Roger Federer, Billie Jean King, Rod Laver, Suzanne Lenglen, John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova, and Bill Tilden. Appendixes of the members of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Major Championships of Tennis, and the Olympic games are included. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about tennis.

Routledge Handbook of Tennis by Robert J. Lake Pdf

Tennis is one of the world’s most popular sports, as levels of participation and spectatorship demonstrate. Moreover, tennis has always been one of the world’s most significant sports, expressing crucial fractures of social class, gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity - both on and off court. This is the first book to undertake a survey of the historical and socio-cultural sweep of tennis, exploring key themes from governance, development and social inclusion to national identity and the role of the media. It is presented in three parts: historical developments; culture and representations; and politics and social issues, and features contributions by leading tennis scholars from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The most authoritative book published to date on the history, culture and politics of tennis, this is an essential reference for any course or program examining the history, sociology, politics or culture of sport.
