In this book I describe the environment in which we live and organizations operate. It is an environment that has been shaped significantly by computing in the past decade and is going to be even more so in the future. From this standpoint I will review some of the latest research in human psychology, neuroscience, and organization in order to identify ways for computing to address the restraint of fear. Next, I share my theory and vision for computers to assist organizations to become more energized, meaning that they will have the necessary abilities to survive and to succeed. Energy in this sense is the unleashing of human and organizational potential, but it is also about using computing in revolutionary new ways; for humans and computers to work autonomously and in some cases "bend time". Finally, I take the energized organization and add the strategic mind on top of it. The mind in this case is a combined human and computer effort; it is up to the leaders and managers to exploit computing to its very limits and to its full potential.

Social computing is concerned with the study of social behavior and social context based on computational systems. Behavioral modeling provides a representation of the social behavior, and allows for experimenting, scenario planning, and deep und- standing of behavior, patterns, and potential outcomes. The pervasive use of computer and Internet technologies by humans in everyday life provides an unprecedented en- ronment of various social activities that, due to the platforms under which they take place, generate large amounts of stored data as a by-product, often in systematically organized form. Social computing facilitates behavioral modeling in model building, analysis, pattern mining, and prediction. Numerous interdisciplinary and interdepe- ent systems are created and used to represent the various social and physical systems for investigating the interactions between groups, communities, or nation-states. This requires joint efforts to take advantage of the state-of-the-art research from multiple disciplines improving social computing and behavioral modeling in order to document lessons learned and develop novel theories, experiments, and methodologies to better explain the interaction between social (both informal and institutionalized), psyc- logical, and physical mechanisms. The goal is to enable us to experiment, create, and recreate an operational environment with a better understanding of the contributions from each individual discipline, forging joint interdisciplinary efforts. DISC, the International Symposium on DIStributed Computing, is an annual forum for research presentations on all facets of distributed computing. DISC 2000 was held on4-6 October, 2000 in Toledo, Spain. This volume includes 23 contributed papers and the extended abstract of an invited lecture from last year’s DISC. It is expected that the regular papers will later be submitted in a more polished form to fully refereed scienti?c journals. The extended abstracts of this year’s invited lectures, by Jean-Claude Bermond and Sam Toueg, will appear in next year’s proceedings. We received over 100 regular submissions, a record for DISC. These s- missions were read and evaluated by the program committee, with the help of external reviewers when needed. Overall, the quality of the submissions was excellent, and we were unable to accept many deserving papers. This year’s Best Student Paper award goes to “Polynomial and Adaptive Long-Lived (2k?1)-Renaming” by Hagit Attiya and Arie Fouren. Arie Fouren is the student author.
