The book’s approach crosses traditional boundaries between neutral and belligerent nations, centres and peripheries, and frontline and rear areas. It focuses on the involvement and wartime transformations of these law-enforcement forces, thus highlighting underlying changes in police organisation, identity and practices across this period.

Policing in Central and Eastern Europe has changed greatly since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some Central and Eastern European countries are constituent members of the European Union, while others have been trying to harmonize with the EU and international requirements for a more democratic policing and developments in accordance with Western European and international policing standards, especially in regard to issues of legality and legitimacy. International policing is a neglected area of interest. As the world gets smaller due to political, economic, social and technological developments, an evident need arises to understand the implications of (inter)national policing. On both national and international levels, policing is undergoing drastic changes as it continuously adapts itself to changes in society and new forms of crime. This collection of papers addresses two central themes - community policing and organisational crime - and brings together insights and experiences on crime, law enforcement and cooperation from both the academic and the professional policing world. Developments in European police co-operation have become sharply focused in the last few years.
