The Lumberjacks by Donald MacKay Pdf

Short-listed for the 1978 Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction The 19th century spawned a unique breed of men who took pride in their woodsmen skills and rough codes of conduct. They called themselves lumberers, shantymen, timber beasts, les bucherons – and, more recently, lumberjacks, working in the vast forests of eastern Canada and British Columbia. Across the country, farm boys would go to the woods, lumbering being the only winter work available. Immigrants – Swedes and Finns more often than not – resumed the trades they had learned so well in the forests of northern Europe. They broke the cold, hard monotony of camp life with songs, tall tales and card games. Within these pages, author Donald MacKay allows us a glimpse into that moment in our heritage when men entered the virgin forest to carve out an industry from the seemingly endless array of pine, spruce, maple and balsam fir found there.

Georges Gilles de la Tourette by Olivier Walusinski MD Pdf

The 19th Century brought many medical advances and discoveries in neurology, with the famed Parisian La Salpêtrière hospital at its center. Medical giants such as Jean-Martin Charcot, Joseph Babinski, and even for a short time Sigmund Freud, walked these halls, so it is a wonder that, an equal among these men, very little exists in the literature on Georges Gilles de la Tourette. This biography is the first comprehensive volume to delve into the life, scholarship, writing, and hobbies of the famed doctor. In Part One, we learn Georges' family history, follow his schooling and mentorship under Charcot, travel to the Worlds Fair of 1900, evade an attempted assassination, all before succumbing to death by syphilis. Part Two provides an in-depth analysis of his neurological and psychiatric works, notably the epynomous neurological disorder that will forever remain "Tourette's Syndrome." Part Three looks at the lighter side of Georges, inspecting his favorite past-times as poet, historian, and art critic. Part Four brings an extensive bibliography of Georges' complete body of work. Author Olivier Walusinski pulls together unpublished family archives, Georges' correspondence with the Parisian journalist Georges Montorgueil, journal articles, and police archives to shed an original light on the famed doctor's life and lasting legacy. These archives have never before been studied or made available to the public, making this one of the first and most comprehensive biographies available and a must-have for any medical library.

The Illuminating Icon by Anthony Ugolnik Pdf

This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. "In Christ there is no East or West," claims a familiar hymn. But the truth is that American Christians know little about Russian Orthodox Christians and harbor many misconceptions about them. In this revealing book Anthony Ugolnik shows how the thousand-year-old Russian Orthodox tradition actively shapes the life of contemporary Russian Christians, and he points out how Russian Orthodoxy can inform and enrich American Christianity. Ugolnik speaks from a unique perspective: of Russian descent, he is an American Christian who has a strong and genuine personal bond with Russian Christians. Ugolnik begins his discussion by exploring the alienation between Russians and Americans - a cultural and religious alienation that is still very strong today, despite changing rhetoric and glasnost. Americans tend to picture Russian Christians as "cowed and ragged masses"; on the contrary, says Ugolnik, they are "a stalwart, strong community." American Christians also tend to be suspicious about the role of icons in Russian Orthodox worship. But Ugolnik points out that icons are not idols; rather, they are religious objects that "image forth" the majesty of God. This powerful sense of the holy that pervades Russian Orthodoxy could reinvigorate American Christianity. Indeed, the Russian Orthodox have much to offer American Christians, according to Ugolnik. They place a much greater emphasis on community in their life and worship -- an emphasis that could help transform the individualistic faith of many American Christians. Similarly, the Orthodox emphasis on historical and spiritual continuity -- in contrast to the imagery of restoration and revival in Reformation Christianity -- could strengthen the worship and witness of American Christians. And the Orthodox sense of the beautiful -- born of a complex aesthetics that undergirds Russian faith and culture -- could enrich the foundation as well as the expression of American Christianity. In the end, American and Russian Christians share the common dilemma of how to relate to the secular world around them, and the Russian Orthodox emphasis on dialogue and engagement could vitalize the way American Christians live out their faith. In this multifaceted book Ugolnik weaves personal experiences with richly developed explorations of Russian and American belief and incisive observations that draw on the literature, philosophy, theology, and history of both cultures. With both passion and compassion Ugolnik urges Russian and American Christians to look to "the illuminating icon of our incarnate God" for guidance: "Let that icon draw us deep into the mystery of a shared life in the Spirit."

The Golden Boys With the Lumber Jacks by L. P. Wyman Pdf

The Golden Boys With the Lumber Jacks (1923) is an adventure novel by L.P. Wyman and one of seven books in his vastly underrated—and relatively unknown—Golden Boys series. Each novel follows the adventures of Bob and Jack Golden, brothers from Maine with curious minds and adventurous hearts. Together, often alongside their trusted friend Rex Dale, the Golden Boys use their problem-solving skills and wilderness experience to overcome danger, discover strange places, and grow into fine young men. Traveling north from Pennsylvania to spend Christmas break with their parents and sister in Skowhegan, Maine, the Golden brothers get stuck in a snowstorm on the side of the highway. After a night of hard work—and a dangerous rescue—Bob and Jack Golden make it home in one piece. But their relief does not last long. They soon learn that their father’s logging business is in trouble—a deed has disappeared, and a tract of land in the Maine woods purchased by Mr. Golden has been dubiously claimed by his rival Ben Donahue. Hoping to help their father in any way possible, the brothers head north to his logging camp. When they get there, they discover a crew of lumberjacks not just worried about fulfilling an enormous order for spruce, but utterly terrified by nightly visits from a ghost. With its brilliant blend of detective, supernatural, and adventure fiction, L.P. Wyman’s The Golden Boys With the Lumber Jacks is an absolute thrill ride from start to finish that tests its heroes’ hearts and minds while keeping the reader engaged and ultimately, wanting more. L.P. Wyman’s The Golden Boys With the Lumber Jacks is the work of a talented author, and is both easy to read and difficult to put down. Published several years before the debut of The Hardy Boys series, which would dominate young adult fiction for decades to come, The Golden Boys series is long overdue for the attention and appreciation it deserves. Although originally published for an audience of teenage boys, Wyman’s series is perfect for children of all ages and genders, as well as for adults looking to return to the simple, exciting fiction of their youth. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of L.P. Wyman’s The Golden Boys With the Lumber Jacks is a newly unearthed classic of young adult literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Ingenious Mr. Pyke by Henry Hemming Pdf

This is the extraordinary story of Geoffrey Pyke, an inventor, war reporter, escaped prisoner, campaigner, father, educator--and all-around misunderstood genius. In his day, he was described as one of the world's great minds, to rank alongside Einstein, yet he remains virtually unknown today. Pyke was an unlikely hero of both world wars and, among many other things, is seen today as the father of the U.S. Special Forces. He changed the landscape of British pre-school education, earned a fortune on the stock market, wrote a bestseller and in 1942 convinced Winston Churchill to build an aircraft carrier out of reinforced ice. He escaped from a German WWI prison camp, devised an ingenious plan to help the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, and launched a private attempt to avert the outbreak of the Second World War by sending into Nazi Germany a group of pollsters disguised as golfers. Despite his brilliance, Pyke ultimately could not find peace, committing suicide in 1948. Yet the full scope of his story remained secret even after his death: in 2009, MI5 released a mass of material suggesting that Pyke was in fact a senior official in the Soviet Comintern. In 1951 papers relating to Pyke were found in the flat of "Cambridge Spy' Guy Burgess after his defection to Moscow. MI5 had "watchers" follow Pyke through the bombed-out streets of London, his letters were opened and listening devices picked up clues to his real identity. Convinced he was a Soviet agent codenamed Professor P, MI5 helped to bring his career to an end. It is only now, more than sixty years after his death, that Geoffrey Pyke's astonishing story can be told in full. The Ingenious Mr. Pyke is a many-faceted account of this enigmatic man’s genius, and reveals him as one of the great innovators of the last century.
