Leaving My Footprints in the Outdoors by Bud Holste Pdf

Harold "Bud" L. Holste developed from a boy who loved to watch wildlife, fishing, and hunting, to a wildlife enforcement officer with a thirty-one-and-a-half-year career protecting the fish and wildlife resources of our country. Bud started hunting small game by trial and error and self-taught methods as a teenager in Illinois and continued hunting game birds, turkey, big game, and varmints after getting a driver's license and car as a young adult in Ohio. Bud also hunted big game in Alaska, Canada, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Utah, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wyoming. Bud pursued antelope, black and brown Bear, caribou, deer, Dall sheep, elk, and mountain goat with family, friends, and sometimes by himself, with a high success rate, for sixty-five years, in all kinds of weather, in different habitats in North America. Shooting critters and pests that ate and destroyed the farmers' and ranchers' crops and hay is an enjoyable pastime for Bud. Bud left his footprints frozen in the ice on the Lake George glacier hunting mountain goat, in a mineral lick hunting Dall sheep, in the Cinder River sand hunting brown bear, and at the Nankoweap ruins in the Grand Canyon. Bud almost drowned as a teenager but chose a hobby that led to his rafting nineteen wild and scenic white water rivers for over two thousand miles, for the camping, fishing, and thrills and spills in Alaska, Canada, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Chile, South America. Bud only had to swim three class V rapids and lived to tell about it. Camping in the great outdoors in tent, truck, trailer, and cabin enabled Bud to endure all Mother Nature could dish out. Bud didn't always take the easiest, shortest, or most direct path to see what was over the next ridge, but left his footprints in some of those places, not to disfigure or destroy, only because he couldn't pick them up after exploring and marveling at the beauty of all the plants, flowers, trees, animals, birds, fish, and wild creatures living on this earth and in the sea. These stories and events told here are true, as Bud recorded his thoughts at the time so others could enjoy the tales of those experiences. Read them and maybe you, too, can imagine leaving your footprint in some of those very same places. Bud always tried to leave enough of a trail for others to follow.

On Digital Advocacy by Katie Boue Pdf

Whether you hike, bike, camp, climb, hunt, ride, paddle, paint, garden—whatever way you get out and enjoy nature, you leave an impact on the outdoors every time you step out your front door. Every step your boots take down dusty trails, every bolt your clip draws into, every time you cruise down a dirt road, till the soil, you leave an impact. Outdoor recreation inherently leaves an impact on the land, but we can work to offset that impact by advocating for earth in our own circles, online and in our neighborhoods. The question is, can we use the digital space to protect the outdoors while still protecting our human spirit? We all share a responsibility to protect our planet––especially those of us in the outdoor industry––and in the digital age, access to advocacy is abundant. Social media hands us the tools to get educated, gather resources, organize and empower ourselves on whatever slice of the "save the planet" pie tickles your appetite to do good. The opportunity and potential for digital advocacy is dizzying––but what happens when we begin to tangle our personal identities with our pursuit of saving a dying earth? As users of public lands, we have an ethical responsibility to the planet. As inhabitants of our identities, we have an ethical responsibility to ourselves, too. Inside, the book covers topics like: The two types of advocacy Becoming an advocate for the outdoor industry Voting for the outdoor spaces you love the most The advocacy retention cycle Online bullying and stalking

Into the Wild Worst Case Scenario! (this aint your grandma's survival manual!) by Ivy Mulligan Pdf

The back country can be an extremely intimidating place even in the best conditions and in the best-case scenario. In my 30 plus years as a NOLS student(not to mention I'm a 25 year veteran as a Red Cross Instructor) I have learned what I can expect from Mother Nature: Don't take Her lightly, and above don't disrespect Her! When discussing back forty survival on the other-hand, we can have a tad bit of fun and a humorous attitude when learning about how to NOT die out there! This tongue and cheek book is humorous but information packed; the contents are taken form my actual script of wilderness survival classes I taught at cross country lodge, with each chapter addressing a different survival skill that can help you in the event of a back country adventure going wrong and you find yourself lost or stranded in a wilderness setting. I kept it very basic and very short; the idea is you can bring this light weight booklet with you in your pack and have it on hand when you venture forth into the great outdoors.

Leave Only Footprints by Conor Knighton Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A delightful sampler plate of our national parks, written with charisma and erudition.”—Nick Offerman, author of Paddle Your Own Canoe From CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Conor Knighton, a behind-the-scenery look at his year traveling to each of America's National Parks, discovering the most beautiful places and most interesting people our country has to offer NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY OUTSIDE When Conor Knighton set off to explore America's "best idea," he worried the whole thing could end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart had left him longing for a change of scenery, but the plan he'd cooked up in response had gone a bit overboard in that department: Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion. In Leave Only Footprints, Knighton shares informative and entertaining dispatches from what turned out to be the road trip of a lifetime. Whether he's waking up early for a naked scrub in a historic bathhouse in Arkansas or staying up late to stargaze along our loneliest highway in Nevada, Knighton weaves together the type of stories you're not likely to find in any guidebook. Through his unique lens, America the Beautiful becomes America the Captivating, the Hilarious, and the Inspiring. Along the way, he identifies the threads that tie these wildly different places together—and that tie us to nature—and reveals how his trip ended up changing his views on everything from God and love to politics and technology. Filled with fascinating tidbits about our parks' past and reflections on their fragile future, this book is both a celebration of and a passionate case for the natural wonders that all Americans share.
