Lectures on Early English History (Classic Reprint) by William Stubbs Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Early English History This collection of Lectures, delivered at various times by Bishop Stubbs, will prove a valuable addition to our authorities for Early English History. The Constitution under the Early English and Norman Kings is described very clearly, and the full explanations given of the technical terms which are used in the Laws and Charters of the Norman Kings are a very noticeable feature in many of the Lectures. All students of Stubbs's Select Charters will find in many of these Lectures elucidations of passages which have hitherto pre sented great difficulty. It is not too much to say that for the first time historians have been presented with a full commentary upon the most difficult portions of the Select Charters.' Chapters of Early English Church History (Classic Reprint) by William Bright Pdf

Excerpt from Chapters of Early English Church History The following Chapters are an expansion of Lectures which have been delivered to my Class, while we had Bede's History before us with a view to the Theological Final School. Wishing to connect them, in their present form, with their original purpose, I have retained a few colloquial phrases, and a few local allusions, which seemed natural in addressing a number of Oxford students, of whom several were personally well known to me. The first or introductory Chapter is devoted to the history of the ancient British Church. The general subject of the rest of the volume is the Age of the Conversion of the old-english people to Christianity a great, though comparatively a brief period, extending but little beyond a century, and closing naturally with the death, in 709, of their greatest native Bishop, him self the evangelizer of those among them who, from a peculiar isolation, were the last to receive the Faith. Original Sources of English History (Classic Reprint) by L. F. Salzman Pdf

Excerpt from Original Sources of English History Arlier generations of schoolboys learnt English History as a series of unrelated facts set out in text-books of doubtful accuracy but indubitable dullness these facts, and above all the dates of their occurrence, they memorized, at the command of their teachers, with the intelligence, if not always with the fidelity, of the average parrot. More of such teachers and text-books have survived the passage of years than might have been hoped; but for some time past more enterprising teachers have supplemented their text-books with Source Books - selections of excerpts and translations from ancient chronicles and contemporary records. Yet, so far as I know, no writer has attempted to show the relation between these extracts and the text-books, or to explain on what bases History is built up. This little book - which had its origin in a course of lectures on The Original Sources of English History, which I gave at St. George's School, Harpenden - seeks to fill that gap. Its objects are two; first, to give the reader some general idea of the materials which the historian can, and should, use, and next to indicate the fascinating light on history which the student can Obtain by indulging in research among those materials. If any critic would complain that I have omitted much worthy of mention, I would retort that I am well aware of that fact, and that, had I chosen, I could have written a prodigious learned book that would have completely failed to serve my purpose. That purpose is not to satiate but to stimulate the appetite. Those who are interested in what I have written will gain more by following the subject up for themselves; those who are bored may at least be grateful that I have been brief. For the same reason I have not attempted any elaborate biblio graphy; the few hints I have given of the where abouts of materials are sufficient to start the enthusiast on his path - a path on to which even the most portentous list of books would never beguile anyone else. Familiar Talks on English Literature by Mrs. Abby Richardson Pdf

Excerpt from Familiar Talks on English Literature: A Manual Embracing the Great Epochs of English Literature From the English Conquest of Britain, 449, to the Death of Walter Scott, 1832 As the title of my book suggests, this is a history of English literature told in familiar style. Its first and overruling purpose is to create a desire, on the part of those who read it, to know the best works of our best authors. I do not believe in anything said or written about English literature that shall serve as a substitute for literature itself, or that does not lead directly to the reading of the best books. For my own part, I would rather know thoroughly half-a-dozen English classics than all the works on literature ever written. Although for several years I have been talking to classes, principally of young women, on the subjects this book includes, this is in no way a report of those talks, but has a unity and sequence which is not quite possible in detached lectures. I have endeavored to show the growth of English literature from its beginning down to the end of the first third of this century. From that time the great names that appear are the names of living men, or of men but lately dead, whose place in the archives of literature is not yet assigned. It is time only which tries the value of an author and sets him among his peers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Place of the Reign of Edward II in English History by Thomas Frederick Tout Pdf

Excerpt from The Place of the Reign of Edward II in English History: Based Upon the Ford Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford in 1913 I have endeavoured to make my book more practical, by indicating, as I go along, what work is, to my knowledge, being done on the reign, and I am glad here to record that a not inconsiderable portion of that work is being under taken by my colleagues and pupils. If the first results of some of this had not been before me, I should have found my task much harder than it has been. I have mentioned the names of some such workers, as occasion has arisen in the course of my discussions. If I do not set down here their names, or the names of others who have helped me, I am none the less grateful for their assistance and advice. I hope that by making this reign, for the next few years, the centre of the seminar studies of my pupils here, we shall some of us have opportunities of testing its soundness.
