Lectures on the History of Preaching (Classic Reprint) by John Ker Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Preaching The author of these Lectures stood in the very front rank of the preachers both of his country and his age. His first volume of Sermons, republished on this side of the Atlantic under the title of "The Day Dawn and the Rain," and originally issued in Edinburgh in 1869, as "Sermons by Rev. John Ker," is now in its thirteenth edition in Great Britain, and has attracted the attention and called forth the commendation of the best critics. The discourses which it contains are characterized by originality of thought, simplicity of style, and a certain quiet power that carries conviction without any straining after effect. His lines of method are all natural without being obvious, and his movement along these is always singularly easy and delightful. The same qualities distinguish his second volume, which, though published after his death in 1886, is a worthy companion of the first, and has already taken its place among the homiletic models of our times. For many years before his death a nervous break-down in health incapacitated him for regular pulpit work. Present-Day Preaching (Classic Reprint) by Charles Lewis Slattery Pdf

Excerpt from Present-Day Preaching This book is the outcome of a request to deliver a course of lectures on Preaching at Berkeley Divinity School. Men who believe in preaching as one of the great forces in the world cannot be timid about multiplying hand-books. This is not a formal treatise, but the frank account of what a reasonably varied experience shows to be the practical requirements of preaching at this particular time. As lectures these chapters were addressed to young men expecting to preach. One reason for allowing them to be printed is the hope that a sympathetic layman here and there, who cares for the Church, may have patience to read them. It would be a satisfaction to think that they might be helping any who sit in the pews to see what we who preach are trying to do. Lectures on Homiletics and Preaching (Classic Reprint) by Ebenezer Porter Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Homiletics and Preaching But how much soever the ministerial office may be contemned by others; how low soever their concep tions of its authority or its source the minister himself must magnify his ofiice.' It 1s of the utmost import ance, that he entertain elevated notions both of its sanc tity and its dignity. The welfare of the people com witted to his charge, no less than the formation and maintenance of his own character requires him to be well persuaded of what dignity, and of how great import ance the office is, whereunto he has been called. Hence the stress which is laid upon it in the Ordination Service of our church. And now again, ' (observes the Bishop, whilst addressing those about to be admitted into the priestly otfice, ) we exhort you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you have in remembrance into how high a dignity, and to how weighty an office and charge ye are called, that is to say, to be messengers, watch men, and stewards of the Lord, to teach and to pre monish, to feed and provide for the Lord's family: to seek for Christ's sheep that are dispersed abroad, and for his children who are in the midst of this naughty world, that they may be saved through Christ for ever.' Excerpt from Nine Lectures on Preaching: Delivered at Yale, New Haven, Connecticut F I rightly understand the objects for which the Lyman Beecher Lectureship was founded, the Lecturer is not expected to deliver a complete and systematic course on Homiletics. He discharges his duty if he offers to the students whom he has the honour of addressing those practical suggestions with regard to the work of the Christian Preacher which have been verified by his own experience and observation. Lectures on Preaching by Matthew Simpson Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Preaching: Delivered to the Students of Yale College, in 1879 The Lectures are now submitted not only to the Classes which heard them, but to all Students for the Ministry; and, also, to the laity of the Churches, who are the. Friends of the Pulpit. If they shall prove in some degree beneficial to young Ministers in stimulating them to a more earnest devotion to their holy work, and to the acquisition of greater power and usefulness, the writer will feel that his labor has not been in vain. Lectures on Preaching by Phillips Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Preaching: Delivered Before the Divinity School of Yale College in January and February, 1877 Let me say one word more in introduction. He who is called upon to give these lectures cannot but remember that they are given every year, and that he has had very able and faithful predecessors. There are certainly, therefore, some things which he may venture to omit without being supposed to be either ignorant or careless of them. There are certain first principles, of primary importance, which he may take for granted in all that he says. They are so funda mental, that they must be always present, and their power must pervade every treatment of the work which is built upon them. But they need not be de liberately stated anew each year. It would make these courses of lectures very monotonous; and one may venture to assume that there are some elemen tary principles upon whose truth all students of the ology are agreed, and whose importance they all feel. Yale Lectures on Preaching by Nathaniel J. Burton Pdf

Excerpt from Yale Lectures on Preaching: And Other Writings We loved him, and he loved us: - it is with this thought that we meet together this afternoon, for the simple and impressive service of the hour before us. The friend whose mortal part we lay tenderly and tearfully in its peaceful resting-place, and whose immortal living self passes to a larger, grander life as we bid him farewell, was a common friend to us all. Strangers to one another, it may be; having our homes in many different places and our work in many different lines; some of us coming into this time of sorrow from the joy of an almost daily communion in thought and hope, and others recalling to our remembrance the delightful association of earlier or later years, we turn our footsteps lovingly to this consecrated house and find ourselves united in a bond of sympathy as we enter within its doors. The spirit of the dead, yet living, friend seems to rest upon us all. We look upon his face and say: What a large-minded, large-hearted, generous, noble man he was. The world, we whisper sadly to each other, has lost out of itself for us something that it will not regain, and becomes poorer and emptier to our thought as one more of those, whose minds and souls appear to us peculiarly fitted for a higher life than this, moves onward to another sphere. What more shall we say concerning him? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Homiletic by Theodor Christlieb Pdf

Excerpt from Homiletic: Lectures on Preaching The man who, in our day, brings a new text-book on homiletic to the theological book-market, must first of all convince himself as to his justification for this step. This is not a difficult matter for the editor of the lectures of the late Professor Christlieb. After the Lord had taken away the departed theologian from the midst of his busy energy of thought and action, his sons soon felt not merely the justification, but also the obligation, of making accessible to still wider circles the fruit of his labours in the field of practical theology, in which he had exercised the greatest influence on the young generation of theological students. As, however, they themselves had not time to prepare the manuscript for publication, they turned to their friend, who, as principal of the "Johanneum" (the school for evangelists, founded by their father), had already in other ways entered into the heritage of the departed, and who felt that he could the less easily decline this work, inasmuch as he hoped to obtain from it a stimulus for his own teaching, and consequently a benefit for his school. Christlieb died at the moment when he had just begun to gather round him a larger circle of decidedly believing students of theology, who were trained by him to a more scriptural and practical conception and exercise of the preacher's office, and whose devoted activity in the Church has since given proof of the justice and usefulness of their master's teaching. Christlieb was a man of the Bible and of practical life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The War and Preaching (Classic Reprint) by John Kelman Pdf

Excerpt from The War and Preaching It would be impossible too strongly to express my sense of the honour which this University has conferred upon me in inviting me to deliver these lectures here. The lectures themselves must be my attempt at acknowledgment, and I am deeply conscious how inadequately that attempt has been achieved. Yet it comforts me to remember that I shall not speak as a stranger among you, but as one of yourselves, and that your judgment will be accordingly tempered. I shall never forget the Graduation Day of 1917. I had come to you from the front in Flanders, and from a long tour of lecturing on the subject of the war in the Middle West and in the Southern States of America. I had seen your great nation passing through the most critical and the most fateful hour of all its history. It seemed to me that day, when through your graciousness I sat among you as a graduate of Yale, that I felt the mighty heart-throb with which America rose and plunged into the most stupendous war of history. And in that hour I was not only among you, I was one of you, - et ego in Arcadia, - and the heartthrob was within my own breast as it was in yours. When one remembers that more than forty courses of these lectures have already been delivered and published, it would seem that there can be nothing left to say. Yet I take it that the thing which you mainly desire is the result of the lecturer's own experience, what he personally has found preaching to be. Each man sees and faces the world anew, and finds something in it for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Preacher His Life and Work by J. H. Jowett Pdf

Excerpt from The Preacher His Life and Work: Yale Lectures In the course of these lectures I am to speak on the general theme of "The Preacher: his life and work." There is little or no need of introduction. The only prefatory word I wish to offer is this. I have been in the Christian ministry for over twenty years. I love my calling. I have a glowing delight in its services. I am conscious of no distractions in the shape of any competitors for my strength and allegiance.
