Lectures on the Atomic Theory, Vol. 2 by Assistant Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Medical Ethics and Humanities Samuel Brown,Samuel Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on the Atomic Theory, Vol. 2: And Essays Scientific and Literary IT is the inalienable prerogative of man to pray to God. It is the royal condition on which he wears the crown of Nature; although the condition is ill fulfilled, and his glory is therefore dim. In every clime and in every age, however, he builds himself an altar. Nor is there any man, he his metaphysical creed what it may, or be he ever so far from God m the spirit of his mind, but sometimes utters himself in willing or involun tary prayers. Superstitions, holidays, pagodas, temples, mosques, images and pictures, churches and chapels, even amulets and charms, do all attest the fact that the distinguishing attitude of man is on his knees. Curses themselves are but inverted prayers; like the images of things within the eyeball, which the eye within the eye restores to their real position in the act of vision. The common sense, or public reason of humanity, nu. Doubtingly declares its conscious allegiance to Him who cannot be adequately named. Even if it is not possible to generalise a philosophy of man from the principles of common sense, as they are called, it is yet inconceivable. Cosmology and the Scientific Self in the Nineteenth Century by Howard Carlton Pdf

This book argues that while the historiography of the development of scientific ideas has for some time acknowledged the important influences of socio-cultural and material contexts, the significant impact of traumatic events, life threatening illnesses and other psychotropic stimuli on the development of scientific thought may not have been fully recognised. Howard Carlton examines the available primary sources which provide insight into the lives of a number of nineteenth-century astronomers, theologians and physicists to study the complex interactions within their ‘biocultural’ brain-body systems which drove parallel changes of perspective in theology, metaphysics, and cosmology. In doing so, he also explores three topics of great scientific interest during this period: the question of the possible existence of life on other planets; the deployment of the nebular hypothesis as a theory of cosmogony; and the religiously charged debates about the ages of the earth and sun. From this body of evidence we gain a greater understanding of the underlying phenomena which actuated intellectual developments in the past and which are still relevant to today’s knowledge-making processes.

The Scientific Legacy of William Herschel by Clifford J. Cunningham Pdf

This book presents a modern scholarly analysis of issues associated with England’s most famous astronomer, William Herschel. The world’s leading experts on Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus, here offer their combined wisdom on many aspects of his life and astronomical research. Solar system topics include comets, Earth’s Moon, and the spurious moons of Uranus, all objects whose observation was pioneered by Herschel. The contributors examine his study of the structure of the Milky Way and offer an in-depth look at the development of the front view telescopes he built. The popular subject of extraterrestrial life is looked at from the point of view of both William Herschel and his son John, both of whom had an interest in the topic. William’s personal development through the educational system of the late 18th century is also explored, and the wide range of verse and satire in various languages associated with his discoveries is collected here for the first time. Hershel worked at a time of incredible discovery, and his work is still highly regarded in the field. Here it is given a thorough investigation, putting into perspective his path-breaking career.
