Lectures on the History of the Turks by John Henry Newman Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Turks: In Its Relation to Christianity It may be necessary for the author to state in the beginning of his volume, in order to prevent disappointment, that he only professes in it to have brought together in one, materials which are to be found in any ordinarily furnished library. Not intending it in the first instance for publication, he has sometimes, to save himself trouble, borrowed words and phrases from the authorities whom he has consulted; and this must be taken as his excuse, if any want of keeping is discernible in the composition. He has attempted nothing more than to group old facts in his own way; and he trusts that his defective acquaintance with historical works and travels. Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Turks in Its Relation to Christianity Nor is this conflict, nor is its perpetuity, difficult of explanation. The South ever has gifts of nature to tempt the invader, and the North ever has multi tudes to be tempted by them. The North has been fitly called the storehouse of nations. Along the breadth of Asia, and thence to Europe, from the Chinese Sea on the East, to the Euxine on the West, Isai., xli. 25: Jer., i. 14; vi. 1, 22: Joel, ll. 20: etc. Etc. Historical Sketches by Blessed John Henry Newman,Aeterna Press Pdf

The following sketch of Turkish history was the substance of Lectures delivered in the Catholic Institute of Liverpool during October, 1853. It may be necessary for its author to state at once, in order to prevent disappointment, that he only professes in the course of it to have brought together in one materials which are to be found in any ordinarily furnished library. Not intending it in the first instance for publication, but to answer a temporary purpose, he has, in drawing it up, sometimes borrowed words and phrases, to save himself trouble, from the authorities whom he has consulted; and this must be taken as his excuse, if any want of keeping is discernible in the composition. He has attempted nothing more than to group old facts in his own way; and he trusts that his defective acquaintance with historical works and travels, and the unreality of book-knowledge altogether in questions of fact, have not exposed him to superficial generalizations. Mr. Pepys and the Turk by Andrew C. Rouse Pdf

“Mr. Pepys and The Turk” is SPECHEL’s first inroad into publication. In line with the mission embodied in its name, this book and subsequent publications will be available in ebook and print-on-demand form, making it considerably more accessible than if it were solely a physical object. “Mr Pepys and Turk” tells of English popular notions of the “Turk” through history, centring upon the diary entries of civil servant Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) and the street ballads which he loved to collect. The author’s fascination with this subject stems from his dual life as an academic/folk singer, but also from having lived and worked most of his adult life in Hungary’s only city with two domed mosques, a minaret and other Turkish remains. Hungary is a country where the Turk gets bad press through incomplete and biased formal education and popular conception, yet one of the most charming children’s rhymes of which (included here in the author’s translation) features Mehmet the Turk. Unlike Hungary, England was not invaded by the Turk, unless you count a very brief visit to the Cornish coast, the only surviving trace of which is England’s oldest public house called “The Turk’s Head”. Yet popular misconceptions abound in both cultures through various media, including a seventeenth-century English street ballad about a battle in Hungary between the European forces and the Ottoman Empire. Here, then, is the “Turk”, not a historical man but a popular concept – lustful, terrible, but also poor and innocent as English popular notions fashion and refashion him through time and perspective.

The Turkish Empire by Richard Robert Madden Pdf

The first volume deals with the political institutions of the Ottoman Empire, beginning with the life of Mohammed, excerpts from the Koran, and a discussion of the ethnic history of Turkey, before delving into the various rulers and regimes. The last two chapters of Volume I discuss the causes and results of the Russo-Turkish War and the finances/economic value of Turkey. The second volume is more concerned with Christianity: that is, nations under Turkey's influence, specifically Christian communities as either minorities within each state or as subject to the influence of Russia and/or the Ottoman Empire. Syria in particular gets a lot of attention, as does Armenia and Greece. A whole chapter is devoted to the history of the Orthodox Church in the region. A long discussion of the Order of the Assassins of Persia and Syria of the 11th and 12th centuries, and their secret sects.

The Rule of the Turks at Constantinople by W. A. Fearon Pdf

Excerpt from The Rule of the Turks at Constantinople: A Lecture Delivered in the Hall of the Winchester Mechanics Institute, on Wednesday, March 7th, 1877 The third period will extend from the peace of Kainardyi onwards. During this period the Empire has been gradually breaking up by one loss after another; while her history is not so much a history of Turkish affairs, as of the intrigues of those various European powers which have used her helpless condition to further their own policy and interests. The complexities of Turkish intrigue have been further complicated by intermixture with Russian, Austrian, French, and English intrigue and the popala lations of Turkey have been made the sport of foreign powers. As the history of this period is closely involved with questions of modern politics, I shall touch but lightly on it. But I am anxious that you should have sharply distinguished in your minds my three periods - the first down to 1566, a period of splendour and conquest the second from 1566 to 1774, a period of failure and increasing rottenness, - at first with some appearance of strength, but at last with acknowledged feebleness the third a period of dissolution, tempered by the protection of European intrigue.
