In May 1995 a meeting took place at the Manchester Metropolitan Uni versity, UK, with the title International Workshop on Numerical Methods for Wave Propagation Phenomena. The Workshop, which was attended by 60 scientists from 13 countries, was preceded by a short course enti tled High-Resolution Numerical Methods for Wave Propagation Phenom ena. The course participants could then join the Workshop and listen to discussions of the latest work in the field led by experts responsible for such developments. The present volume contains written versions of their contributions from the majority of the speakers at the Workshop. Professor Amiram Harten, but for his untimely death at the age of 50 years, would have been one of the speakers at the Workshop. This text is based on lectures given by the authors to students of the Physico Technical Institute in Moscow in the course of many years. Teaching mechan ics of continuous media to students in physics has some specific features. Un fortunately, the students rarely have enough time for this branch of science. Over a comparatively short period of time and without sophisticated mathe matics, the lecturer has to set forth the principal facts and methods of this rather important aspect of theoretical physics. The goal can be achieved only if the knowledge and intuition obtained by students in other courses has been mobilized efficiently. These observations have extensively been taken into account when classical as well as more contemporary and actively developing branches of mechanics of continua are considered. The theory of wave propagation is the most important topic in mechanics of continua for those who work in the field of physics and geophysics. That is why most attention is paid to this topic in the main text as well as in numerous exercises. The propagation of various kinds of hydrodynamic, magnetohydro dynamic, acoustic and seismic waves is considered in some detail. We begin with simple questions and proceed to more complicated ones. Accordingly, we treat the elasticity theory first. In the limits this appears to be simpler than the mechanics of fluids. For further study of each topic the reader will find references in the bibliography.

Gentlemen, --Having examined the principal phenomena of polarized light, and their laws--so far as these laws can be detected by experiment--we may now proceed to consider their connexion with the physical theory. On a former occasion, when considering the phenomena of unpolarized light, I discussed their bearing upon the two theories--the theory of Newton and that of Huygens; and it appeared, on an examination of the facts then considered, that the weight of probability was altogether in favour of the latter. Of the phenomena which we have been lately considering, and of those which still remain to be unfolded, the explanations afforded by the Newtonian theory are, comparatively speaking, so scanty and incomplete, that we shall best consult our own progress in this interesting branch of science, by confining our attention in what follows to the wave-theory. It is strange that the department of optics in which the wave-theory now stands unrivalled, should be the very same which Newton selected as affording the most decisive evidence against it. "Are not," says he, "all hypotheses erroneous, in which light is supposed to consist in pressure, or motion, propagated through a fluid medium ?" . . . . "for pressures, or motions, propagated from a shining body through an uniform medium, must be on all sides alike; whereas it appears that the rays of light have different properties in their different sides." In this objection Newton seems to have had his thoughts fixed upon that species of undulatory propagation, whose laws he himself had so sagaciously unfolded. This book comprises some of the lecture notes I developed for various one-or two-semester courses I taught at the Colorado School of Mines. The main objective of all the courses was to introduce students to the mathematical aspects of wave theory with a focus on the solution of some specific fundamental problems. These fundamental solutions would then serve as a basis for more complex wave propagation and scattering problems. Although the courses were taught in the mathematics department, the audience was mainly not mathematicians. It consisted of gradu ate science and engineering majors with a varied background in both mathematics and wave theory in general. I believed it was necessary to start from fundamental principles of both advanced applied math ematics as well as wave theory and to develop them both in some detail. The notes reflect this type of development, and I have kept this detail in the text. I believe it essential in technical careers to see this detailed development at least once. This volume consists of five chapters. The first two on Scalar Wave Theory (Chapter 1) and Green's Functions (Chapter 2) are mainly mathematical although in Chapter 1 the wave equation is derived from fundamental physical principles. More complicated problems involving spatially and even temporally varying media are briefly introduced.
