Legacy of the Cunard Line: Lusitania, Mauretania, Aquitania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and QE2 by Timothy Turner Pdf

This copiously illustrated book considers much more than its title suggests, beginning with a major section focusing on the history of the Cunard Line and their ships starting with Britannia (1840), Great Britain (1845) and the leadership of Samuel Cunard. Next, the loss of the Lusitania, which shocked the world, is examined and the Inquiry which followed. Other Cunarders such as the Aquitania and Mauretania are featured and then more modern liners: Queen Mary (1936), Queen Elizabeth (1940), and Queen Elizabeth 2 or QE2 (1969). Other famous disasters at sea are reviewed: the sinking of the Empress of Ireland (1906), due to a collision in May 1914 which led to an official inquiry, the fire on the Normandie (1932) which caused the ship to turn over in its dock in February 1942 and the sinking of the Andrea Doria (1951) in July 1956. The SS Great Britain (1843) is examined followed by three sets of ship and liner cigarette cards and eleven Appendices.

Legacy of the White Star Line by Timothy Turner Pdf

For over a century the Titanic disaster has fascinated the world's historians, writers, film makers and general public ever since she sank with the loss of over 1500 lives in April 1912. This copiously illustrated book considers much more than its title suggests, beginning with an overview of the White Star Line's fleet. Next, Titanic's construction, layout, opulent furnishings, passenger experiences and the central personalities are introduced. Important aspects of her maiden voyage are revisited; the first ice warnings, lookouts, striking the iceberg, sinking, partial lifeboat evacuation and the lessons learned from the Inquiries held in Britain and America. After touching on the 'Titanic's Curse', forewarnings, and myths of 1912, it moves to Dr Robert Ballard's dramatic discovery and exploration of her in 1985. This reawakened interest, and in 1997, James Cameron's film "Titanic" proved an outstanding success. RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic are also reviewed together with the heroic rescue of stranded passengers from the hospital ship, Rohilla, which hit rocks in Whitby in October 1914 during a violent gale. The author has also written "Legacy of the Cunard Line" featuring the Lusitania, Mauretania, Aquitania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and QE2 with other famous sea disasters: Empress of Ireland, SS Normandie, SS Andrea Doria & the history of SS Great Britain.

Cunard by Janette McCutcheon Pdf

In 1839, Samuel Cunard travelled from his native Nova Scotia to Britain to raise capital to found his fledgling steamship company, which was to be named the British & North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. Quickly shortened to the Cunard Line, the first ship set sail for Canada and America in July 1840 and opened the steamship trade to the Americas. The fleet rapidly expanded to become the dominant force on the transatlantic route, with feeder services from the Mediterranean too. Never having lost a passenger's life at sea, Cunard was also one of the safest of the steamship lines and operating comfortable ships. By the 1900s, few lines could match the company's vessels for speed or luxury and the advent of the four-funnelled Mauretania, Lusitania and Aquitania just confirmed the pre-eminence of the line. During the inter-war years came the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth and the line could boast the fastest and largest ships in the world. Never a line to stand still, in 1969 came Queen Elizabeth 2 and in the 2000s came the world's largest liner, RMS Queen Mary 2.

Atlantic Liners: A Trio of Trios by J. Kent Layton Pdf

They formed three trios of wonder ships. From the Cunard Line came the Lusitania, Mauretania, and Aquitania. From the White Star Line came the Olympic, the infamous Titanic, and the Britannic. From the Hamburg-Amerika Line came the Imperator, Vaterland and Bismarck, which would later find service as Cunard's Berengaria, the U.S. Line's Leviathan, and White Star's Majestic. They were, in turn, the fastest, most powerful, largest and most luxurious ocean liners that had ever sailed that ocean. Some would find great success; others would suffer disaster. Their careers would be affected by natural elements, by mismanagement, and by the brutalities of war. Their fates were also inextricably intertwined. The all-new 2009 Version of "Atlantic Liners" boasts over 730 photos, as well as nearly a dozen general arrangement plans of the ships. An Introduction has been penned by Mark Chirnside.
