The Legal Status of Women (Classic Reprint) by Jessie Jane Cassidy Saunders Pdf

Excerpt from The Legal Status of Women The following pages do not attempt to cover explicitly the entire condition of the legal status of women in all countries, nor all possible aspects of their status in the United States. It has been found expedient only to state the law on some of the most vital points. It must be understood that the statute law alone has been examined, and that the actual practice in each state is sometimes more, and sometimes less liberal than the statutory enactments. It has been impossible to enter into the question of interpretation of the law. The latest code of each state has been examined with the amendments and additions thereto. It is suggested that an acquaintance with the code and different volumes of the session laws of each state is quite possible to any woman who will read carefully and who can gain access to the books themselves. Though effort has been made to avoid inaccuracies, it is not claimed that none exist in the matter here presented. Some repealing acts may not have been traced, and some laws enacted have possibly been overlooked. All corrections and additions will be gratefully received by the Committee. To the friends in each state and territory who have kindly rendered material assistance we wish to express our gratitude, and to the Association of the Bar of New York City, and the New York Law Institute acknowledgment is hereby given for the privilege of consulting their libraries. The Social and Legal Status of Women by Winnie Hazou Pdf

This book delves into the legal traditions that relegated women to an inferior social and legal status worldwide. Winnie Hazou probes the nature of law, changes in legislation, and the trend of modern law toward a social engineering that effects gender equality. Hazou analyzes changes in major areas of women's lives, such as family, employment, and the acquisition of social power. She presents a global perspective of women's status and discusses international law aimed at eliminating the exploitation and abuse of women. The book highlights five countries, exploring the cultural basis for and social attitudes toward the position of women in each country. Students and scholars of women's studies will find this book a valuable resource. The book concludes that both national and international law are slowly evolving into an effective tool for the elimination of discrimination against women. In spite of residual traditions, and beliefs across all cultures concerning gender roles, there is great institutional support in governments as well as the United Nations to elevate the status of women. This book combines the sociology of women and the sociology of law to give a global perspective on not only the current position of women but the changes that are occurring in their lives.

The Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women by Judith A. Baer,Leslie Friedman Goldstein Pdf

The Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women: Cases in Law and Social Change is designed to provide undergraduate students with a comprehensive, sophisticated treatment of the legal status of all American women. Authors Baer and Goldstein skillfully blend doctrinal and political developments to document and explain the evolution of women's rights and the law - as well as the dynamics and dissension within the feminist movement. Building on Goldstein's previous editions, this book combines updated material on constitutional law, gender discrimination, and women's rights with new cases and readings on family law, gay rights, and criminal law. This edition takes a more socio-political and institutional approach than other books on women and the law. The authors consider issues such as institutional questions of constitutional interpretation, the scope of judicial power, the balance of federal-state power, the interaction between law and other social and political institutions, and the capacity of law to effect societal change. The inclusion of state and lower federal court decisions greatly strengthens the book's focus on the law's relationship to gendered inequality. equality, advances in reproductive technology law, divorce, child custody, education, same-sex marriage, pornography, and domestic violence. Special features include: a timetable of national women's rights cases and legal changes; readings that present opposing views on issues such as pornography, rape, and the battered woman syndrome; historical coverage; discussion questions following most cases; and a supplemental website.

In a changing world, how can we be sure that women as well as men entrepreneurs and workers obtain the benefit from these changes? Ensuring that women have the same legal opportunities as men is one part of the picture. By measuring where the law treats men and women differently, Women, Business and the Law shines a light on how women's incentives or capacity to work are affected by the legal environment and provides a basis for improving regulation. The fourth edition in a series, Women, Business and the Law 2016: Getting to Equal examines laws and regulations affecting women's prospects as entrepreneurs and employees in 173 economies, across seven areas: accessing institutions, using property, getting a job, providing incentives to work, building credit, going to court, and protecting women from violence. The report's quantitative indicators are intended to inform research and policy discussions on how to improve women's economic opportunities and outcomes.
