The Law and the Woman (Classic Reprint) by Rose Falls Bres Pdf

Excerpt from The Law and the Woman By study and comparison of the laws of the several States in their relation to women may be evolved such legislative measures as will tend to establish a fair legal status for women, which would mean a government of the people, for the people and by the people, along with the concession that women are people. The power is vested in the legislatures of the several States to make, ordain and establish all manner of laws, statutes and ordinances not repugnant to the Constitution and deemed for the best good and interest of the Common wealth. It is by and through these law making bodies women must establish their protective and defensive measures and these measures should be so fair, sane and equitable as to command universal respect and confidence. Careful and intelligent progress by women in the shaping of such new laws as are intended to equalize their status with the male citizen will best demonstrate their right to citizenship with its resultant obligations and duties, for in the multiplicity of laws now cluttering our statute books a few more, unless direct, forceful and valid, will but add to the confusion and defeat their purpose. It may be well to recall the fact that in 1913 more than two thousand bills were introduced in the Wisconsin legislature, of which eight hundred and twenty three were passed. The law making bodies of other States stagger, session after session, under equally heavy burdens. Wherefore it would seem that a Bureau of Legislation, with women fairly represented, to which all bills would have to be submitted for approval before introduction. Legal Status of Canadian Women by Henrietta Muir Edwards Pdf

Excerpt from Legal Status of Canadian Women: As Shown by Extracts From Dominion and Provincial Laws Relating to Marriage, Property, Dower, Divorce, Descent of Land, Franchise, Crime and Other Subjects The question, What is the law? On this or that subject, was so frequently asked in our Council meetings when discussing various topics that relate to women, and so much delay was incurred in coming to any conclusion till the question could be answered, that I thought it advisable to prepare a brief synopsis of such laws as especially affect women. Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa by Ruth A. Gallaher Pdf

Excerpt from Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa: An Historical Account of the Rights of Women IN the preparation of this monograph the writer has attempted to present a general survey of the status of women in Iowa by pointing out the distinctions between men and women which have been established by law or sanctioned by judicial rulings. The status of women with reference to activities which are not regulated either directly or indirectly by the government is outside the scope of this monograph and is not discussed in these pages. Thus the position of women in religious and other similar organizations has not been considered since this does not concern their status as citizens. Furthermore, all laws of a general nature applying equally to men and women have received only incidental mention, although such laws are Often of vital importance to women. In this class belong the laws concerning public utilities, protection of life and property, public health, and municipal administration. Unless otherwise specified or plainly inapplicable to both sexes, Iowa statute laws governing civil rights and obligations may be assumed to apply equally to men and women. Laws concerning political matters, on the contrary, refer to male citizens only unless women are specifically included. In some cases it has seemed advisable to include a brief discussion of certain aspects of the status of women which show little or no legal discrimination against women. Thus the admission of women to the public schools, to institutions of higher education, and to the professions has been discussed, although the Iowa laws show but little difference between men and women in such matters. There are two reasons for including these subjects: first, because such privileges are largely furnished at the expense of the State; and secondly, be cause the equality which has prevailed in Iowa is by no means general throughout the United States and ought not to be taken for granted. Teaching has been included for the same reasons, and also because the teacher in State supported schools is in one sense a public official. Woman Before the Law (Classic Reprint) by John Proffatt Pdf

Excerpt from Woman Before the Law T is not attempted in the following pages to give a complete compendium of the law relating to mar ried women, so as to make it a work of reference it is hoped that the subject will be so presented as to give to intelligent readers outside of the legal pro fession a reliable summary 'of the law free from the usual technicalities. Still, the subject is so far treated in a legal point of view, as to afford, it is hoped, some assistance to the law-student. I have studiously avoided the part of a doctri naz'ra; Ihave only considered the law as it is; and have not introduced questions of a debatable charac ter upon which decisions differ. To carry out the subject properly, I was compelled to treat of the law pertaining to the married relation. Woman and the Law (Classic Reprint) by George James Bayles Pdf

Excerpt from Woman and the Law His work is designed to serve the pur poses of a general view of the legal con dition of the women of the United States at the present time, and is more especially for the reading of women. It is a general state ment and not an exhaustive analysis; it is not designed for the practising lawyer, man or woman, for though it deals with legal prin ciples, it does not apply them to concrete cases; and least of all is it an attempt to make every woman her own lawyer. English Laws for Women in the Nineteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by Caroline Sheridan Norton Pdf

Excerpt from English Laws for Women in the Nineteenth Century Now it is certainly possible, that in like manner the Law reforms so confidently promised for this session, may be set aside; and some future writer of Chancellors' Lives, may ex press his regret, that in the Session of 1854 little was thought of except the taking of sebastopol. But, if another half century should glide away without re form in our Ecclesiastical and other Courts (as more than half a century elapsed, between the motion of Ex - Chancellor Hard wicke and the amendment of the Habeas Corpus Act) shall we set it all down to the overwhelming interest taken in Quebec and Sebastopol? The Legal Rights, Liabilities and Duties of Women; With an Introductory History of Their Legal Condition in the Hebrew, Roman and Feudal Civil Systems (Classic Reprint) by Edward Deering Mansfield Pdf

Excerpt from The Legal Rights, Liabilities and Duties of Women; With an Introductory History of Their Legal Condition in the Hebrew, Roman and Feudal Civil Systems The idea of the following work was suggested to me by ladies of distinguished intelligence and worth. So far as regards the plan, then, I may fairly claim to hold the sex responsible for its success. Not so, however, in respect to its very imperfect execution. The plan embraced more than could be brought within the limits of this volume; and it embraced a more suggestive and even a more practical form. It was intended to do, not only what has been done, but to have, also, some reflections on proposed amendments to existing laws, and some of the practical forms of business. The former, I have been obliged to limit to brief observations, scattered throughout the treatise, and the latter to omit altogether. There is room, however, on this subject, for another volume, and should this find favor with my intelligent countrywomen, it is intended to produce another, which shall be a sort of guide for them, in the every day business of life. The work as now published, consists of four parts. The first may be called, a History of the Civil Condition of Women. The second, is an Account of her Civil Eights, as a Citizen of the Republic. The third, gives the general principles of the Laws of Property, common to all citizens. The fourth contains the Eights, Liabilities and Duties of Women in the Domestic Relations. Of course, these subjects are briefly treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Woman Under the Law (Classic Reprint) by Alvah L. Stinson Pdf

Excerpt from Woman Under the Law Women have risen to the better chance afforded them by the amelioration of manners. The most fortunate of them have been cruelly obstructed by the large remainder of barbarism which exists in every community, and they have done their work in the teeth of every conceivable disadvantage. They have had to snatch it from a cross-fire of hostile circumstances. That they should have been able to exercise their rare talents at all, and so triumphantly, is a kind of miracle, at which we can but stand amazed. To avoid the risk of any possible misconstrue tion I shall offer here a short explanation of my locus standi as regards the whole subject in ques tion. Woman and the Law by Russell Herman Conwell Pdf

Excerpt from Woman and the Law: A Comparison of the Rights of Men and the Rights of Women Before the Law No one, except reviewers for newspapers, whose whole idea of a volume is drawn from this uncer tain source, ever reads a preface. It furnishes a cozy little nook into which the snugly ensconced author may hide and say just what he pleases, without danger of discovery. Anice little retreat it is, surely and the writer has slyly crept into this hiding-place just to talk it all over to him self. Shall the old and worn manuscript be ex changed for type? Will the volume bear the searching criticism of dear friends and respected acquaintances? Will the cause of human equal ity and the happiness of the race be advanced thereby? Will the distinguished leaders in the Woman's Suffrage Party shout in derision, or will they discover a co-working spirit? What will Mrs. Livermore, or Miss Dickinson, or Mrs. Stowe say about it, if a stray Copy should be placed in their laps by the newsboy, when there is nothing else to command their attention? What would those bright angels over there say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Petticoats and Prejudice - Women's Press Classics by Constance Backhouse Pdf

Drawing on historical records of women’s varying experiences as litigants, accused criminals, or witnesses, this book offers critical insight into women’s legal status in nineteenth-century Canada. In an effort to recover the social and political conditions under which women lobbied, rebelled, and in some cases influenced change, Petticoats and Prejudice weaves together forgotten stories of achievement and defeat in the Canadian legal system. Expanding the concept of “heroism” beyond its traditional limitations, this text gives life to some of Canada’s lost heroines. Euphemia Rabbitt, who resisted an attempted rape, and Clara Brett Martin, who valiantly secured entry into the all-male legal profession, were admired by their contemporaries for their successful pursuits of justice. But Ellen Rogers, a prostitute who believed all women should be legally protected against sexual assault, and Nellie Armstrong, a battered wife and mother who sought child custody, were ostracized for their ideas and demands. Well aware of the limitations placed upon women advocating for reform in a patriarchal legal system, Constance Backhouse recreates vivid and textured snapshots of these and other women’s courageous struggles against gender discrimination and oppression. Employing social history to illuminate the reproductive, sexual, racial, and occupational inequalities that continue to shape women’s encounters with the law, Petticoats and Prejudice is an essential entry point into the gendered treatment of feminized bodies in Canadian legal institutions. This book was co-published with The Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History.
