Legends and Tales of the Harz Mountains by Maria Elise Turner Lauder Pdf

Excerpt from Legends and Tales of the Harz Mountains It was during my first summer visit to the Harz Mountains that the idea occurred to me of making a collection of the most interesting of the legends of this charming district. This appeared to me all the more desirable, since no such collection peculiar to this mountain range exists in English. I wrote on the subject to the celebrated German author Gustav Freytag, unfolding my scheme, which he highly approved, and he very kindly rendered me valuable assistance by naming some of the books - and these were not a few - which it might be needful to study, and the libraries where they would be found. From a vast mass - up into the thousands - of Sagen, or legends and traditions, I chose the most interesting, giving them as I found them, when they were only pure translations. Some of the stories are, however, original, being founded on some legend. No mountainous district of Germany is, perhaps, so rich in legendary lore as this most northern chain. The Feminine Gaze by Anne Innis Dagg Pdf

Many Canadian women fiction writers have become justifiably famous. But what about women who have written non-fiction? When Anne Innis Dagg set out on a personal quest to make such non-fiction authors better known, she expected to find just a few dozen. To her delight, she unearthed 473 writers who have produced over 674 books. These women describe not only their country and its inhabitants, but a remarkable variety of other subjects: from the story of transportation to the legacy of Canadian missionary activity around the world. While most of the writers lived in what is now Canada, other authors were British or American travellers who visited Canada throughout the years and reported on what they found here. This compendium has brief biographies of all these women, short descriptions of their books, and a comprehensive index of their books’ subject matters. The Feminine Gaze: A Canadian Compendium of Non-Fiction Women Authors and Their Books, 1836-1945 will be an invaluable research tool for women’s studies and for all who wish to supplement the male gaze on Canada’s past.

Converting the Saxons by Joshua M. Cragle Pdf

Utilizing a “crusading ethos,” from 772 to 804 AD, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, waged war against the continental Saxons to integrate them within the growing Frankish Empire and facilitate their conversion to Christianity. While substantial research has been produced concerning various components of Carolingian history, this work offers a unique examination of Charlemagne’s Saxon Wars as a case study for understanding methods of conversion used in the Christianization of Europe, as well as their significance for subsequent conversion strategies employed around the globe. Converting the Saxons builds on prior scholarly research, is grounded in primary sources, and is contextualized with a robust historical introduction. Throughout the text, particular emphasis is given to Christian encounters with paganism and the way paganism was interpreted, confronted, and transformed. Within those encounters, we observe myriad forces of coercion and incentivization used in societal religious conversion, demonstrating the need for a serious reconsideration of the standard narratives surrounding Christian missions. This book provides a scholarly and accessible resource for students and researchers interested in transhistorical methods of conversion, the history of Christianity, Early Medieval paganism, Colonial religious encounters, and the nature of religious conversion.
