Devonshire Folk Tales by Michael Dacre Pdf

Devon is a county rich in history and folklore, the roots of which lie in the beliefs of ancient Celtic inhabitants. Long ago, whilst middle England was converted to Christianity, the Celtic people of the edge-lands were still Druids. With no explanation offered for the cycles of hardship and abundance, a large amount of folklore and superstition emerged. Moulded by the land, weather and generations of people's attempts to make sense of the world, these thirty tales are full of Devonshire wit and wisdeom, and tell of the strange and macabre; memories of magic and otherworlds; and proud recollections of folk history. The captivating stories, brought to life with unique illustrations from the author, will be enjoyed by readers time and again.

Humorous and Other Poetic Pictures by Frederick Thomas Pdf

Excerpt from Humorous and Other Poetic Pictures: Legends and Stories of Devon Thanks, my good friends, for the advice you give If all the same to you, I 'd rather live To reap the profit which my pen may earn, And leave Posterity's pale lamp to burn. A poet is not very much to blame Who writes for profit sure, and chances fame, And thinks that man almost a mortal sinner Who courts the Muse and goes without his dinner. Humorous and Other Poetic Pictures by Frederick Thomas Pdf

Excerpt from Humorous and Other Poetic Pictures: Legends and Stories of Devon "To their own merits modest men are dumb;" They ask a friend to blow and beat the drum! My Lords and Ladies, generous patrons all, Thanks for your quick responses to my call. When with this project to the post I started, I own I felt a little chicken-hearted: A thousand envelopes, stamped and directed; But, ah! how many answers were expected! Yet scarcely had a thousand minutes passed, Ere my subscription list was filling fast: A thousand kind replies! Doubt dropped her fetters, And I at once became "a man of letters!" Now, my Pegasus, up! and let this be A Preface worthy of my modesty. 'Tis usual, as every reader knows, To write the preface of a book in prose; But prefaces are dull things at the best, Putting one's patience to a frightful test, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Meandering Through History, Mysteries Or Legends in Devon. by John Coombes Pdf

This book contains ten circular walks between the distances of 1.5 miles to 5.5 miles, each of the chapters as an easy to follow format, where to start and places or things to lookout for along the way. The chapters each covers something from history, a mystery or legend which in some cases can be extremely interesting. The terrain on the walks varies considerably from open fields, green lanes, woodland, country lanes or open moorland. So with this in mind be sure to dress sensibly with warm wet proof/cold resistant clothing, for example temperatures on the moors can be 5 degrees lower than the mainland. Most important make sure you wear good footwear, ideally walking boots to keep feet dry give good support for the feet and ankles on very uneven ground. Please whenever you are out and about make sure you follow the Countryside Code, gates are normally shut by the farmers to keep farm animals in, sometimes they may be left open so animals can reach food or water. So be sure to leave gates as you find them or follow instructions on any signs on the gate. On some of these walks with historical places be careful not to disturb ruins or historical sites because our heritage is for the future not just for the past.
