Lenore Tawney by Karen Patterson Pdf

Recent years have seen an enormous surge of interest in fiber arts, with works made of thread on display in art museums around the world. But this art form only began to transcend its origins as a humble craft in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that artists used the fiber arts to build critical practices that challenged the definitions of painting, drawing, and sculpture. One of those artists was Lenore Tawney (1907–2007). Raised and trained in Chicago before she moved to New York, Tawney had a storied career. She was known for employing an ancient Peruvian gauze weave technique to create a painterly effect that appeared to float in space rather than cling to the wall, as well as for being one of the first artists to blend sculptural techniques with weaving practices and, in the process, pioneered a new direction in fiber art. Despite her prominence on the New York art scene, however, she has only recently begun to receive her due from the greater art world. Accompanying a retrospective at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, this catalog features a comprehensive biography of Tawney, additional essays on her work, and two hundred full-color illustrations, making it of interest to contemporary artists, art historians, and the growing audience for fiber art. Copublished with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

Can Lenore find the courage to forge her own path, or will the world of lies she's built come crashing down? Out of the Shadows, Into the Fire, and Across the Ice are the first three books in the captivating Broken Gears young adult steampunk fantasy series. Fans of the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger and Garth Nix's Old World universe will delight as this Victorian-era-esque world unfolds before them. A multi-layered steampunk fantasy tale of colorful characters, lost magic and technology, and subterfuge that promises to entrance. If you like smart heroines, forgotten magic, and rich Victorian settings, then you'll love Lenore's intrigue-and-adventure storyline. "Out of the Shadows features great prose, a gripping plot, and characters that will remain with readers long after they are done reading the story." —Reader's Favorite Editorial Review: "Dana Fraedrich has a vast eye for details and a flawless knack with complex relationships. This world is primarily steampunk, but traces of fantasy and paranormal are in the background, staying in the shadows as these characters are forced to hide certain aspects of their lives. Lenore is often judged for her status, age, and for being a woman, but she doesn't let the world define her. She uses it to create a mask to hide behind, but this doesn't take away from her brazen, opinionated, and spunky personality. Into the Fire is a riveting adventure that will hook you from page one, with a strong-willed heroine, complex characters, romance, and complicated relationships." NO, seriously. This isn't one of those dead for a year kind of deals other publishers do - this is the real deal. DEFO dead! Deader than a door nail kind of dead. The sort of dead that leaves the reader gasping in stunned amazement at the sheer audacity of the thing. Lost Feast by Lenore Newman Pdf

A rollicking exploration of the history and future of our favorite foods When we humans love foods, we love them a lot. In fact, we have often eaten them into extinction, whether it is the megafauna of the Paleolithic world or the passenger pigeon of the last century. In Lost Feast, food expert Lenore Newman sets out to look at the history of the foods we have loved to death and what that means for the culinary paths we choose for the future. Whether it’s chasing down the luscious butter of local Icelandic cattle or looking at the impacts of modern industrialized agriculture on the range of food varieties we can put in our shopping carts, Newman’s bright, intelligent gaze finds insight and humor at every turn. Bracketing the chapters that look at the history of our relationship to specific foods, Lenore enlists her ecologist friend and fellow cook, Dan, in a series of “extinction dinners” designed to recreate meals of the past or to illustrate how we might be eating in the future. Part culinary romp, part environmental wake-up call, Lost Feast makes a critical contribution to our understanding of food security today. You will never look at what’s on your plate in quite the same way again.

The Buddha for Modern Minds by Lenorë Lambert Pdf

How can the Buddha's teachings help me? Here? Now? In MY life?A practical, feet-on-the-ground book answering all the questions and misconceptions that arise for people curious about the Buddha's teachings and what they offer in this modern life of ours. For those with little or no knowledge this is a secular introduction. For those already practicing, it's a secular reference book for key concepts and several of the Buddha's important lists. Clear explanations of often-confusing concepts are brought alive with personal examples of the powerful impact of practicing the Buddha's wisdom - the dropping away of stress, angst and upset and the arrival of calm, clarity, energy, joy and open-heartedness. Cutting through the array of orthodox Buddhisms that often confuse beginners, this book strips away the trappings of the cultures through which they came to us, helping us know the Buddha, his core teachings, how meditation and mindfulness fit in, what happened to the teachings after his death, and how to practice them now. As the Buddha did, it puts aside unknowable issues like rebirth which are unnecessary for fully practicing the teachings. Worse, they're a distraction from the very real and practical project at the heart of his wisdom - flourishing in this life. Here. Now.
