Applied Mechanics by James H. Cotterill Pdf

Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary General Introduction to the Theory of Structures and Machines; With Diagrams, Illustrations, and Examples On the author's appointment to lecture on Mechanics in the Royal Naval College, a course of elementary lessons was commenced, based on Rankine's well-known treatise, with such assistance as could be obtained from other sources. After some years this course assumed a tolerably permanent form, and it was thought desirable to print it, partly from the inconvenience to students of being exclusively dependent on oral instruction, and partly from an idea that it might be useful to others besides those who were immediately addressed. The place which these lectures occupy in the programme of the College will be found explained in an appendix. The preparation of the work for the press has extended over a considerable period, and has been subject to many interruptions. There is therefore not always the unity desirable in a scientific treatise; nor is it by any means complete, even when due account is taken of the stringent limitations explained in the Introduction. It is, however, hoped that these deficiencies may be partly compensated for by the fact that the book is the product, of a great deal of experience in teaching the subject, and a great deal of consideration as to the matter which ought to find a place in a general elementary treatise. Nearly the whole has been delivered in the form of lectures, and some part has actually been printed from notes taken throughout one session by a member of the junior class at that time, which were afterwards transcribed for the press by my assistant. Notes on Rankine's Applied Mechanics by George I. Alden Pdf

Excerpt from Notes on Rankine's Applied Mechanics The following pages are the result of putting in permanent for some of the matter which it has been found expedient or necessary to give by dictation to students in the Worcester Free Institute, who pursue for the first time, the study of Rankine's Applied Mechanics. The object in their publication is not to furnish a key, or provide a substitute for diligent study and careful thought on the part of the student, but rather to encourage him by giving such suggestions, solutions, and references as experience has shown that the average student requires thus economizing time in the preparation of the lesson, and also giving the instructor opportunity to devote the time spent in the class room to recitations, and to the application of the principles and formulæ of the lesson, to practical problems. To what may be strictly called notes on the "Applied Mechanics," I have added a brief explanation and illustration of the method of producing the reciprocal diagram of stresses substantially taken from "Economics of Construction," by R. E. Bow, C. E. Also a separate treatise on strength of beams and an investigation of a particular problem relating to seven bar parallel mot;ions, known as "Peaucillier's Parallel Motion." This work has been prepared from materials drawn from various sources, especially from notes given by Prof Eustis of The Lawrence Scientific School, to the class of '68. I have also received assistance from George H White B S, a graduate of the Free Institute, and have inserted on several articles of the Applied Mechanics, notes which are entirely his own work. I have endeavored to make proper reference to works from which quotations or extracts have been taken. The blank pages at the end are intended to receive such supplementary notes as the instructor may find adapted to the needs and capacity of his class. Elements of Mechanics by Mansfield Merriman Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of Mechanics: Forty Lessons for Beginners in Engineering During the past forty years great advances have been made in the methods of instruction in all branches of applied mechanics, but little or no change has taken place in the manner of presenting the subject of rational mechanics. This elementary volume is an attempt to apply the best methods of applied mechanics to the development of the fundamental principles and methods of rational mechanics. To this end, constant appeals are made to experience, by which alone the laws of mechanics can be established, numerous numerical illustrations are given, many queries and problems are stated as exercises for the student, and a system of units is employed with which every boy is acquainted. The field of rational mechanics is so vast that no book can present more than a part of the same. Even the limited course usually given in engineering colleges is so difficult and appeals so little to the students' experience that few acquire a complete mastery of it. In the opinion of the author there should be given in every engineering college two courses in rational mechanics, an elementary one during the freshman year in which only as much mathematics is employed as is indispensably necessary, and an advanced one after the completion of the course in calculus. Elements in Mechanics by Mansfield Merriman Pdf

Professor Merriman is the author of a number of text-books on several branches of applied mathematics, including a well-known treatise on the Method of Least Squares. In the present volume his aim is to employ "the best methods of applied mechanics in the development of the fundamental principles and methods of rational mechanics." "To this end constant appeals are made to experience, by which alone the laws of mechanics can be established, .... and a system of units is employed with which every boy is acquainted." In the first 111 pages the leading principles of Statics are dealt with. The remainder of the book is devoted to Dynamics. Four hundred examples give ample occupation to the student. The work is written in clear and concise terms, and the author appears thoroughly justified in expressing the hope that a student who has worked through the 400 problems will have laid a broad and strong foundation for his future progress. One point of detail offers an opening for discussion. Professor Merriman makes much use of the terms Inertia and Force of Inertia, following closely Newton's explanation of "Vis Inertiae." A teacher of elementary work has always to bear in mind that not everything which is lawful is expedient, and it may be permissible to remark that the expediency of using the terms Inertia, Force of Inertia, in an "elementary text-book," is not established by the mere fact that Newton used them. Is not the statement "matter has Inertia" merely a poetical, or proverbial, or pithy mode of stating that Matter is distinguished from No-matter by the facts that Matter conforms to the "Laws of Motion"! Professor Merriman's own use of the terms Inertia and Force of Inertia is perfectly precise and unimpeachable; but does not the use made of so comfortable a word by some writers encourage a student to indulge in pseudo explanations such as that a body is hard to stop because it has so much inertia-a proposition which on investigation will be often found to belong to a transcendental branch of logic, known as feminine! "Inertia" as an "explanation" of phenomena belongs to the class of philosophical terms which includes "vital force" as an explanation of the growth of living things. -"The Mathematical Gazette"
