Not illustrated. 1741 edition. Excerpt: ... A LETTER Concerning the Burning os ALTENA, As related in the History of Charles XII. Paris 25 April 1733. TH E great difficulty we have in France of getting books from Holland, is the reason why the ninth tome of the Bibliotheque Raisonnee came but late to my hands. And I will observe by the way, that if the journal is equal to the pieces I have perus'd in it, it is a misfortune for our men of letters in France, that they are not acquainted with that work. In page 496, part II. of the ninth tome abovemention'd, I found a letter in which I am accus'd of aspersing the city of Hamburgh in the history of Charles the twelfth. A- few days since one Mr. Richey os Hamburgh, a scholar and a man of merit, having honoured me with a visit, revived the the complaint I just now mention'd in the name of his fellow-citizens. Here follows the relation I gave, and what I myself am oblig'd to declare. In the heat of the unhappy war which made so dreadful a havock in the North, the Counts of Steinbock and of Welling, the Swedish Generals, . form'd Anno 1713, in. the very city of Hamburgh, a resolution to burn Altena, a trading city, and subject to the Danes; for the commerce of this city began to flourish so much, that the Hamburghers grew a little jealous of it. This resolution was executed unmercifully in the night of the ninth of January. These generals lay in Hamburgh that very night; they lay in it the tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth; and dated from the last mentioned city the letters they wrote to clear themselves from the imputation of being the authors of so barbarous a catastrophe. 'Tis besides certain, and the Hamburghers themselves do not deny it, that the gates of their city were shut against several of the inhabitants of Altena; against..

Thoughts on the English Government by John Reeves Pdf

Excerpt from Thoughts on the English Government: Addressed to the Quiet Good Sense of the People of England, in a Series of Letters, Letter the First The following pages make part of what was intended as a Preface to a Work now in hand: But the Author having been gradually led into many reflections which are of a temporary nature, and some of them such as may be thought not quite suited to the temper and gravity of the Work to which they were to be prefixed, he gives them to the Public as a Pamphlet; and if his manner of treating the subject of our Government and Laws should be approved, the present sheets may be followed by more. Letters on England, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by Louis Blanc Pdf

Louis Blanc was a French politician and historian. He may best be known for his attempts to implement socialist reforms with the new government that was formed after the Revolution of 1848 in France. While he aimed to secure employment for the urban poor, there were ultimately too many issues with the government and the policies for Blanc to effect any real change. He was blamed for the failure of the new social program and his safety was threatened. To keep his health and his life, he was forced to flee France. He first escaped through Belgium and then found his way to London. During the years of 1847-1862, Blanc lived in England. While staying in England, he wrote a multitude of letters about England. These letters explore his experiences and his opinions about English life and politics. This first volume of his letters contains sixty individual letters in total. These cover a wide range of topics. Some of the most common topics he explores are politics, society, and British royalty. Blanc explores politics in letters such as "The English in China," "England an Aristocratic Republic," and "Rivalry Between English and Americans." He discusses British society in letters such as "Industrial Crimes," "How the Poor Die," and "National Education in England." He studies royalty in letters such as "the Queen," "The Duke of Bedford," and "Death of Prince Albert." This collection of letters would be great for any reader, but especially for the reader interested in English society and structure in the nineteenth century, or the reader interested in the life and experiences of Louis Blanc. England and Germany in the War by Robert J. Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from England and Germany in the War: Letters to the Department of State This book comprises a series of letters addressed to the Secretary of State by Mr. Robert J. Thompson, recently American consul at Aix-la-Chapelle, Germany, who resigned from his post, as the letters explain, purposely to be free from official restrictions in reporting facts of the European war situation as he has found them. Mr. Thompson is a citizen of Chicago. He has spent close to ten years in the consular service in Germany and England, and has also spent much time in France, the beautiful Lafayette monument in Paris being the result of his suggestion and effort. He entered the foreign service upon the recommendation of friends among the business men of the country for the purpose of demonstrating what a successful business man might accomplish in the direction of extending American foreign trade. The character of his reports and observations reveal an independent point of view somewhat out of, if not above the ordinary. Letters From England (Classic Reprint) by Manuel Alvarez Espriella Pdf

Excerpt from Letters From England Tne dresses of the peasantry are far less inter esting than they are in our own land they are neither gay in colour nor graceful in shape; that of the men diflers little in make from what the higher order wear. Ihave seen no goats they are not common, for neither their flesh nor their milk is in use; the people seem not to know how excellent the milk is, and how excellent a cheese may be made from it. All the sheep are white, and these also are never milked. Here are no aqueducts, no fountains by the way side.
