Letters from the Land of the Rising Sun by Henry Spencer Palmer Pdf

Excerpt from Letters From the Land of the Rising Sun: Being a Selection From Correspondance Contributed to "the Times" Between the Years 1886 and 1892, and Reproduced With the Permission of the Proprietors of That Journal Competition, allied with steam and steel, is fast operating to lessen the enormous distance which separates Japan from Europe. Already, with ordinary luck, the traveller who does not tarry may reach Tokyo from London 1111 San Francisco in thirty days. Soon he will be able to do so in twenty-five or twenty-six days, by way of Montreal and Port Moody. Hitherto, the wonders and beauties of this pleasant land have been virtually monopolized, as far as foreigners are concerned, by a thin stream of travellers, mainly of the globe-trotting class. But the day cannot be far off when they will be brought fairly within the reach of any vacation tourist able to spare three or four months for exploiting a country that offers attractions of the highest order as a holiday resort. Japan, indeed, has the enviable reputation of inspiring love at first sight in the heart of every comer. Nor is this a mere passing sentiment. It grows steadily as acquaintance ripens. As well with those who remain for years as with those whose stay lasts but for a month or two, there is a something about the country and its people that never fails to win lasting and even affection ate regard. Ambassadors from the Islands of Immortals by Zhenping Wang Pdf

Using recent archaeological findings and little-known archival material, Wang Zhenping introduces readers to the world of ancient Japan as it was evolving toward a centralized state. Competing Japanese tribal leaders engaged in ambassador diplomacy and actively sought Chinese support and recognition to strengthen their positions at home and to exert military influence on southern Korea. Wang brings diplomatic history to life in his descriptions of the diplomats and their personalities and literary talents as well as their ambitions and frustrations. He explains in detail the rigorous criteria of the Chinese and Japanese courts in the selection of diplomats and how the two prepared for missions abroad. He journeys with a party of Japanese diplomats from their tearful farewell party to hardship on the high seas to their arrival amidst the splendors of Yangzhou and Changan and the Sui-Tang court. The depiction of these colorful events is combined with a sophisticated analysis of premodern diplomacy using the key concept of mutual self-interest and a discussion of two major modes of diplomatic communication: court reception and the exchange of state letters. accepting, or rejecting court ceremonial arrangements.

Interpreters in Early Imperial China by Rachel Lung Pdf

This monograph examines interpreters in early imperial China and their roles in the making of archival records about foreign countries and peoples. It covers ten empirical studies on historical interpreting and discusses a range of issues, such as interpreters’ identities, ethics, non-mediating tasks, status, and relations with their patrons and other people they worked with. These findings are based on critical readings of primary and secondary sources, which have rarely been utilized and analyzed in depth even in translation research published in Chinese. Although this is a book about China, the interpreters documented are, surprisingly, mostly foreigners, not Chinese. Cases in point are the enterprising Tuyuhun and Sogdian interpreters. In fact, some Sogdians were recruited as China’s translation officials, while many others were hired as linguistic and trading agents in mediation between Chinese and Turkic-speaking peoples. These idiosyncrasies in the use of interpreters give rise to further questions, such as patterns in China’s provision of foreign interpreters for its diplomatic exchanges and associated loyalty concerns. This book should be of interest not only to researchers in Translation and Interpreting Studies, but also to scholars and students in ancient Chinese history and Sinology in general.

British Engagement with Japan, 1854–1922 by Antony Best Pdf

This book by a leading authority on Anglo-Japanese relations reconsiders the circumstances which led to the unlikely alliance of 1902 to 1922 between Britain, the leading world power of the day and Japan, an Asian, non-European nation which had only recently emerged from self-imposed isolation. Based on extensive original research the book goes beyond existing accounts which concentrate on high politics, strategy and simple assertions about the two countries’ similarities as island empires. It brings into the picture cultural factors, particularly the ways in which Japan was portrayed in Britain, and ambivalent British attitudes to race and supposed European superiority which were overcome but remained difficulties. It charts how the relationship developed as events unfolded, including Japan’s wars against China and Russia, and in addition looks at royal diplomacy, where the Japanese Court came eventually to be treated as a respected equal. Overall, the book provides a major reassessment of this important subject.
