Letters to the Rt. Rev. John Hughes, Roman Catholic Bishop of New York (Classic Reprint) by Frances B B B Frances B B B Frances Frances B B B Frances Kirwan Kirwan,Kirwan Kirwan Pdf

Excerpt from Letters to the Rt. Rev. John Hughes, Roman Catholic Bishop of New York Its sons have dorned the bar, the bench, the pulpit, the army, the navy, the legislatures, the Congress of these United States. That there are multitudes from Ireland who are no loss to their own country, nor any advantage to this, cannot be denied. The reasons for this I may examine hereafter. But yet we have many fine illustrations of Irish genius, character and valour, all along our history. And I have regarded yourself as one of them, so far forth as genius and force of character are concerned. And I have often pointed you out as an illustration of the high respectability which Irish character is capable of attaining when relieved from the burdens that oppress and debase it. Hence I have regarded as your eulogy the sneers of those who have ad dressed you as John Hughes, the Gardener. Such taunts come not from true men. Excerpt from A Letter to the People of Ireland, Upon the Intended Application of the Roman Catholics to Parliament for the Exercise of the Elective Franchise CVC'I' 6 ever may be their decifion, no good can arife from it equal to the prefer vation of that happy unanimity which has lately fubfified between the Pro tefiants and Catholics of Ireland, nor any evil to beidreaded equal to that of a renewal of their ancient animo fities. The difinterefied fervices I have rendered to the collefiive body of the nation, ought to give me a right to the public attention; but I have likewife a Ieparate claim to the confidence of each of the three great parties into which it is divided, as the papers I circulated among you will tefiify for me, that I have been. Practical and Internal Evidence Against Catholicism by Joseph Blanco White Pdf

Excerpt from Practical and Internal Evidence Against Catholicism: With Occasional Strictures on Mr. Butler's Book of the Roman Catholic Church; In Six Letters, Addressed to the Impartial Among the Roman Catholics of Great Britain and Ireland I would dwell with pleasure upon the recep tion which has been given to the first edition of this work, if the expression of my gratitude might not be mistaken for the complacency of success. Only the few who know me' intimately, those who witnessed the struggle I endured between a sense of duty, and a natural aversion to part of the task which that duty demanded; can have a just idea of my thankfulness for the indulgence which I have experienced. Indeed, nothing but the many proofs of kindness and good-will bestowed upon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters of an Irish Catholic Layman by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from Letters of an Irish Catholic Layman: Being an Examination of the Present State of Irish Affairs in Relation to the Irish Church and the Holy See Treating respectfully - at least in intention - but With very uncommon freedom, of the policy and actions of ecclesiastics of high rank, they have been received by other ecclesiastics with a remarkable warmth of approval. This is not due to any newness of matter nor merit of treatment. Desultory and frag mentary from the circumstances of their composition, wanting in close-knit argument and logical evolution, they are so far from the ideal projected in the writer's mind that he is more inclined to apologise for forestalling the work of some competent hand than to accept praise for their execution. What is most strongly present to him is this that if one of our literary chiefs - a Sullivan or a Duffy - had undertaken the task, he might have struck such a smashing blow at Irish ecclesiastical Whig gery as would have swept it out of Sight for ever. One merit they have; they photograph (as regards the subjects they embrace) the mind of Catholic Ireland, and of Irish Catholics everywhere. They give articulate expression to thoughts and feelings which are powerfully moving a' million hearts. They say What multitudes of people desire to say, and which many could say far better, but are prevented from saying at all, and they are made to do this under the' conviction that it is better to give those thoughts and feelings voice than to allow them to rankle and in ame till they issue in deadly injury to the Church. Letters of an Irish Catholic Layman by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR Pdf

Excerpt from Letters of an Irish Catholic Layman: Being an Examination of the Present State of the Irish Affairs in Relation to the Irish Church and the Holy See (1883-4) "I want an intelligent and well-instructed laity - a laity not arrogant, nor rash in speech, nor disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand. I want you to rouse yourselves, to understand where you are, and to know yourselves. I would aim primarily at organisation, edification, cultivation of mind, growth of the reason. It is a moral force, not a material, which will vindicate your profession and secure your triumph." - Cardinal Newman. "The great triumph of Satan is to produce a 'Liberal Catholic.' Such a man as Pius IX. lately proclaimed a worse enemy than a heretic or infidel. 't is, ' says Brownson, 'the liberalism which has penetrated the Catholic camp which renders Catholics throughout Europe so imbecile in defence of Catholic interests... It is all the work of liberal Catholics, without whom Agnostics and infidels would be reduced to impotence.'" - Tablet, 31st January, 1875. "A man's life-blood is frozen in its current, his intellect deadened, and his very soul annihilated by the everlasting dinning into his ears by the 'wise' and 'prudent, ' more properly the timid and selfish, of the admonition to be politic, to take care not to compromise one's cause or one's friends. My soul revolted, and revolts even to-day, at this admonition. Almost the only blunders I ever committed were made when I studied to be politic, and prided myself on my diplomacy." - O. A. Brownson. Excerpt from The Letters of Fabius, to the Right Hon. William Pitt, on His Proposed Abolition of the Test, in Favour of the Roman Catholics of Ireland: With an Appendix, Containing Mr. Pitt's Speech in the Debate of 1790 Nothing has been more common among us oflate than, upon the authority of fome writers of confi derable name, to talk of the liberality of the Pagans in this refpeet, and'to extol that amiable fpirit of indulgence, that generous abfence of all religious (liftinetion which their hiflory is faid to exhibit. Let not the Heathens flatter themfelves too much. They are praifed for other fakes' than their own and if Paganifm is loved, it is with all the hatred which its admirers owe to Chriftianity. But, fet ting afide the motive of their preference, what mean while is the true fiate of the ancient practice?
