LibrarianshipQuo Vadis? by Herbert S. White Pdf

Librarians and libraries now face unprecedented challenges, risks, and opportunities. In his latest collection of articles and speeches, White focuses on the professional issues confronting librarians at a time of increased technological options-when simple information access can be easily and directly done by end users, but in which complex information access poses needs and concerns which the end user may not even recognize, let alone understand. Often delivered with wit, these insightful and sometimes controversial commentaries are intended to provoke serious thought, discussion, and ultimately, action. A must read for library and information science professionals and valuable supplementary reading for students of library and information science.

Libraries and Librarianship by George Sylvan Bobinski Pdf

In George Bobinski's sixty-year career as a library professional (1945 - 2005), libraries underwent massive changes and epochal advancements. In this important work, Bobinski summarizes the major trends and events that have transformed the library world and the profession of librarianship into what it is today. Libraries and Librarianship begins with a historical review of the core of librarianship, focusing on the information formats available in or through libraries; the organization of library information sources; changes in reference service; trends in library management; and the all-embracing impact of technology on libraries. Bobinski also addresses library types and the growth of library cooperation and resource sharing; the spread of collaboration through library systems, consortia, and networks; federal funding, library philanthropy, and the important role of the Council on Library and Information Resources since its establishment in 1956; the growth and activities of professional library associations; the shifting roles of gender and ethnicity; and the changes in library buildings. Furthermore, a list of eminent individuals who had the greatest impact on the field during this period and influenced the dramatic changes that have taken place in library and information science education is included. Concluding with a discussion of the major developments in the field and providing a look into what the future might hold for libraries, this book will be embraced by library students, practitioners, and professors alike.

Silahkan simak penuturan pustakawan Jerman, Czech Republic serta Mexico dan tentu saja Indonesia. “We astronomy librarians are also very fortunate because we work in a technologically advanced environment where many evelopments like access to databases, availability of e-journals, extensive text-mining, and others have been implemented much earlier than in other subject areas. Somemes am asked whether I would like to change job now that I have spent 20 years in the same instuon. My answer has been and always will be the same: if the environment around you and the technologies you apply in your daily work evolve constantly, there is no need to change job, because you are changing with the job” (Uta Grothkopf, Head, Library and Informaon Centre, ESO - European Southern Observatory, Germany) “Pri pohledu z okna knihovny mùže bÿt dr. Intellectual Freedom and Social Responsibility in American Librarianship, 1967-1974 by Toni Samek Pdf

Between 1967 and 1974, a number of librarians came together to push for change in the American Library Association. They soon prompted a majority of the profession to examine their role in the dissemination and preservation of culture and to ask basic questions about the terrain that the profession defends. A particular concern was the limitations to intellectual freedom (if any) that might arise in the pursuit of other perhaps equally worthy goals. The questions raised by this advocacy group were based on a relatively new concept of librarianly social responsibility that was partly an outgrowth of the civil rights and antiwar agitation of the period and partly a continuation of the proud traditions of the alternative press movement in the United States. The resulting dissension and turmoil exposed an inherent discrepancy not only between the rhetoric of ideals within the profession and the reality of practice but between librarians as agents of change--librarians' having a social agenda--and professional "neutrality" or the provision of information for all sides without taking sides. These conflicts have never been resolved. The reader will find in this book a fully researched presentation of the years of ferment and political infighting that brought the issues into such sharp focus.
