Inverse Problems of Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere by V.E. Zuev,I.E. Naats Pdf

This monograph undertakes to present systematically the methods for solving inverse problems of lidar sensing of the atmosphere, with emphasis on lidar techniques that are based on the use of light scattering by aerosols. The theory of multi-frequency lidar sensing, as a new method for studying the microphysical and optical characteristics of aerosol formations, is also pre sented in detail. The possibilities of this theory are illustrated by the experimental results on microstructure analysis of tropospheric and low stratospheric aerosols obtained with ground-based two- and three-frequency lidars. The lidar facilities used in these experimental studies were construc ted at the Institute of Atmospheric Optics S8 USSR Academy of Sciences. Some aspects of remote control of dispersed air pollution using lidar systems are also considered. A rigorous theory for inverting the data of polarization lidar measure ments is discussed, along with its application to remote measurement of the complex index of refraction of aerosol substances and the microstructure pa rameters of background aerosols using double-ended lidar schemes. Solutions to such important problems as the separation of contributions due to Rayleigh molecular and Mie-aerosol light scattering into the total backscatter are ob tained by using this theory. Lidar polarization measurements are shown to be useful in this case. The efficiency of the methods suggested here for inter preting the lidar polarization measurements is illustrated by experimental results on the investigation of the microphysical parameters of natural aero sols and artificial smokes using polarization nephelometers.

Atmospheric Lidar Fundamentals by Chiao-Yao She,Jonathan S. Friedman Pdf

"Since the comprehensive textbook entitled Laser Remote Sensing: Fundamentals and Applications, written by R. M. Measures, was published byWiley-Interscience in 1984 [1.1], there have been tremendous advances both in laser technology - especially in the realm of spectral purity and high power - and in information/ digital technology. These advances in the past three-plus decades have transformed narrowband lidars from being demonstrations of remote sensing concepts to working instruments capable of probing the atmosphere on regular and quasi-continuous bases. Nevertheless, until 2005 there was no substantial textbook development about atmospheric lidars to keep up with these advances. At that time, two extensive collections of book chapters, written by experts and researchers specializing in different aspects and types of lidars, were published. They are Laser Remote Sensing, published by CRC Press with Takashi Fujii and Tetsuo Fukuchi [1.2] as editors, and Lidar: Range-Resolved Optical Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, published by Springer with Claus Weitkamp [1.3] as the editor. These books brought up to date all important advances and practices in lidar research. The book chapters in these collections, though already more than a decade old at the time of this writing, contain sufficient information for beginners to learn and to initiate a chosen type of lidar for their remote sensing and research needs. When coupled with manufacturers' websites that now provide up-to-date information on the availability of lidar hardware, these resources represent sufficient information for state-of-the-art system development"--

Lidar Techniques and Remote Sensing in the Atmosphere by Emmanuel Mensah Francis Emmanuel Mensah Pdf

This book provides laser and lidar professionals and students with some basics learning tools in the field of lidar, laser instrumentation, and data analysis. It benefits also ordinary readers who are interesting in remote sensing with laser. The reader will first get an idea about the history of laser and introductory knowledge on the electromagnetic theory. Then the book familiarizes with basic important definitions of terms such as stimulated emission of radiation, population inversion, spontaneous emission, absorption, laser, lidar, maser, radar, water vapor mixing ratio, water vapor density, etc.... . Some basic equations used in lidar and some lidar techniques are also introduced. Water vapor is one of the most important atmospheric variables that play a key role in air quality, global warming, and climate change. Despite its abundance in the atmosphere, and its importance for the climate system, many questions regarding water vapor are presently unresolved. Raman Lidar system has an extraordinary ability to sense accurately water's high temporal and spatial structure in the atmosphere. This book is a review of the electromagnetic theory. It is finally an introduction to lidar techniques for the measurement of Nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor in the atmosphere.

Advances in Atmospheric Remote Sensing with Lidar by Albert Ansmann,Roland Neuber,Patrick Rairoux,Ulla Wandinger Pdf

Lidar or laser radar, the depth-resolved remote measurement of atmospheric parameters with optical means, has become an important tool in the field of atmospheric and environmental remote sensing. In this volume the latest progress in the development of Lidar methods, experiments, and applications is described. The content is based on selected and thoroughly refereed papers presented at the 18th International Laser Radar Conference, Berlin, 22 - 26 July 1996. The book is divided into six parts which cover the topics of tropospheric aerosols and clouds, Lidar in space, wind, water vapor, troposheric trace gases and plumes, and stratospheric and mesospheric profiling. As a supplement to fundamental LIDAR textbooks this volume may serve as a guide through the blossoming field of modern Lidar techniques.

Solutions in LIDAR Profiling of the Atmosphere by Vladimir A. Kovalev Pdf

Provides tools and techniques to identify and address distortions and to interpret data coming from Lidar sensing technology This book covers the issues encountered in separating the backscatter and transmission terms in the LIDAR equation when profiling the atmosphere with zenith-directed and vertically-scanning Lidars. Solutions in Lidar Profiling of the Atmosphere explains how to manage and interpret the Llidar signals when the uncertainties of the involved atmospheric parameters are not treatable statistically. The author discusses specific scenarios for using specific scenarios for profiling vertical aerosol loading. Solutions in Lidar Profiling of the Atmosphere emphasizes the use of common sense when interacting with potentially large distortions inherent in most inversion techniques. Addresses the systematic errors in LIDAR measurements Proposes specific methods to estimate systematic distortions Explains how to apply these methods to both simulated and real data Solutions in Lidar Profiling of the Atmosphere is written for scientists, researchers, and graduate students in Meteorology and Geophysics.
