Life in the Clearings by Susanna Moodie Pdf

If you've read Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace, the historical fiction novel that describes a gruesome double murder in Canada in 1843, you would be interested to know the sources that were used by Atwood during her research. Life in the Clearings by Susanna Moodie was one such reference book in which the author, Susanna Moodie recounts her meeting with the infamous murderess Grace Marks, a young house help who was convicted to life imprisonment for her role in the slaying of her employers. Susanna Moodie was an Englishwoman born in Suffolk. Her two sisters were also writers. She wrote and published her first book of children's stories before she was twenty. Later, Moodie transcribed the narrative of a former Caribbean slave, Mary Price, as part of her involvement in the Anti-Slavery Society. She married a former military man who had served in the Napoleonic Wars and migrated to Canada in 1832. She continued to write about her life in the newly formed colonies there and today, these books are invaluable pieces of history that document a pioneering way of life. The customs, climate, wildlife and landscape as well as the social happenings of Upper Canada are brilliantly recorded in a series of journals, letters and biographical sketches that Moodie wrote to keep herself occupied and also to supplement the family income. Born into a relatively wealthy upper middle class English family, Moodie herself found life in the colony dull and hard and she did not find life in the "bush" as she called it, particularly enjoyable. When she and her family moved to a small town, Belleville, in Southeastern Ontario, this was much more to her liking. She called Belleville the "clearings." Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush to give the book's complete title is a sequel to an earlier volume that she titled Roughing it in The Bush which dealt with her struggle to maintain life on a remote Canadian farm. Roughing it in the Bush was an immediate success and became a ready reckoner for potential emigrants from Britain who were thinking of migrating to Canada. She meant it to be a frank and unromantic view of the tough life that new emigrants born in comfortable surroundings like herself would have to face in the new country. Life in the Clearings also served as inspiration for Margaret Atwood's 1970 collection of poems entitled The Journals of Susanna Moodie. In 2003 Moodie was honored by the government of Canada with a commemorative postage stamp. Life in the Clearings is indeed a remarkable document of a way of life that is now long gone...

Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush by Susanna Moodie Pdf

"Dear foster-mother, on whose ample breast The hungry still find food, the weary rest; The child of want that treads thy happy shore, Shall feel the grasp of poverty no more; His honest toil meet recompense can claim, And Freedom bless him with a freeman's name!" S.M. In our work of "Roughing it in the Bush," I endeavoured to draw a picture of Canadian life, as I found it twenty years ago, in the Backwoods. My motive in giving such a melancholy narrative to the British public, was prompted by the hope of deterring well-educated people, about to settle in this colony, from entering upon a life for which they were totally unfitted by their previous pursuits and habits. To persons unaccustomed to hard labour, and used to the comforts and luxuries deemed indispensable to those moving in the middle classes at home, a settlement in the bush can offer few advantages. It has proved the ruin of hundreds and thousands who have ventured their all in this hazardous experiment; nor can I recollect a single family of the higher class, that have come under my own personal knowledge, that ever realised an independence, or bettered their condition, by taking up wild lands in remote localities; while volumes might be filled with failures, even more disastrous than our own, to prove the truth of my former statements.

Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush by Susanna Moodie Pdf

Book Excerpt: with the rainbow of Iris, the winged feet of Mercury, and the upward pointing finger of Faith; and as for thy footstool, it should be a fleecy white cloud, changing its form with the changing breeze. Yet this hope of mine, of one day seeing the Falls of Niagara, was, after all, a very enduring hope; for though I began to fear that it never would be realized, yet, for twenty years, I never gave it up entirely; and Patience, who always sits at the feet of Hope, was at length rewarded by her sister's consenting smile. During the past summer I was confined, by severe indisposition, almost entirely to the house. The obstinate nature of my disease baffled the skill of a very clever medical attendant, and created alarm and uneasiness in my family: and I entertained small hopes of my own recovery. Dr. L---, as a last resource, recommended change of air and scene; a remedy far more to my taste than the odious drugs from which I had not derived the least benefit. Ill and languid as I was, Niagara Read More

Life In The Backwoods by Susanna Moodie Pdf

Written as a continuation of her sensational 1852 text, Roughing it in the Bush, Susanna Moodie’s Life in the Backwoods continues the narrative of her experience as a settler in mid-nineteenth century Upper Canada. By relating her own experiences and those of the community of pioneers also living in the harsh environment of the Canadian backwoods, Moodie creates a faithful portrait of the harsh life faced by settlers to the British Colony. Written primarily for British readers, Life in the Backwoods—together with Roughing it in the Bush—acted as a guide for newcomers to Canada on how to live and survive in the uncultivated wilds of Canada. Roughing it in the Bush, Or, Life in Canada by Susanna Moodie Pdf

When "Roughing It in the Bush" was published in 1852, it created an international sensation, not only for Susanna Moodie's "glowing narrative of personal incident," but also for her firm determination to puncture the illusions European land-agents were circulating about life in Canada. This frank and fascinating chronicle details her harsh - and humorous - experiences in homesteading with her family in the woods of Upper Canada. Part documentary, part psychological parable, "Roughing It in the Bush" is, above all, an honest account of how one woman coped not only in a new world, but, more importantly, with herself. The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the complete original text.
