Life of A Concubine's Granddaughter by Marie F. Chung Pdf

“Like a cat, I feel that I have lived through many lives—none of them sheltered. I’ve never had it easy, but then, I am not one to take the easy way out and I do not give up too easily. Actually, I have had more than my fair share of living, and what I have been through is not for the faint of heart. I am one of those who thrive in adverse conditions; it is then I unleash my built-in strength.” Marie Chung is the granddaughter of a concubine. She grew up in Hong Kong until she was a young adult and immigrated to Canada. Her fascinating story follows her travels throughout Canada, the tragedies and adversities she endured, and the triumphs and memories she cherishes. Life of the Concubine’s Granddaughter is an intimate, captivating memoir that recounts a remarkable life and shows us what strength, resilience, courage, and a positive outlook on life can really do.

The Concubine's Daughter by Helen Kwok Pdf

The Concubine's Daughter is a snapshot of a bygone era, depicting life in the British colony of Hong Kong in the fifties and sixties. It is the story Elizabeth Lee, beautiful, intelligent, and liberated, from the time she is a wide-eyed eighteen year-old studying English Literature at the University of Hong Kong, sharing girlish secrets with her two best friends, to her becoming an academic at the University, to just after her thirtieth birthday, when she leaves Hong Kong with her husband and young son for the US, frightened in part by the riots inspired by the Cultural Revolution taking place across the border in mainland China. After twenty years in the US she returns to Hong Kong in 1986, just ten years before China is to regain sovereignty over the colony. Educated in English Elizabeth is keenly aware of the conflict within herself between her love of certain aspects of Western culture and her Chinese heritage. Living in that period of the colony's history, and largely divorced from the cultural life of the Chinese mainland, she is conscious of a sense of isolation. Discriminatory attitudes and actions, whether based on gender, race, or language, are very much a fact of life in Hong Kong during this period. The subject matter is original. The narrative style is witty, mildly sarcastic, and humorous in places. The vivid depiction of social customs and manners and memorable characters from different strata of society contribute to make The Concubine's Daughter a book well worth reading.

The Modern Classics: The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong Pdf

The Concubine’s Children is the story of a family cleaved in two for the sake of a father’s dream. There’s Chan Sam, who left an "at home" wife in China to earn a living in "Gold Mountain"—North America. There’s May-ying, the wilful, seventeen-year-old concubine he bought, sight unseen, who labored in tea houses of west coast Chinatowns to support the family he would have in Canada, and the one he had in China. It was the concubine’s third daughter, the author’s mother, who unlocked the past for her daughter, whose curiosity about some old photographs ultimately reunited a family divided for most of the last century.

Space, Politics, and Cultural Representation in Modern China by Enhua Zhang Pdf

Regarding revolution as a spatial practice, this book explores modes of spatial construction in modern China through a panoramic overview of major Chinese revolutionary events and nuanced analysis of cultural representations. Examining the relationship between revolution, space, and culture in modern China the author takes five spatially significant revolutionary events as case studies - the territorial dispute between Russia and the Qing dynasty in 1892, the Land Reform in the 1920s, the Long March (1934-36), the mainland-Taiwan split in 1949, and the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) - and analyses how revolution constructs, conceives, and transforms space. Using materials associated with these events, including primarily literature, as well as maps, political treatises, historiography, plays, film, and art, the book argues that in addition to redirecting the flow of Chinese history, revolutionary movements operate in and on space in three main ways: maintaining territorial sovereignty, redefining social relations, and governing an imaginary realm. Arguing for reconsideration of revolution as a reorganization of space as much as time, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese culture, society, history and literature.

Watching God Woo the World by Ruth E. Correll Pdf

Do you wonder how a thick book with thin pages of fine print written centuries ago remains the world’s all-time best seller? Matchless stories occupy nearly half the Bible, but you need to know they exist and where to find them. In Watching God Woo the World, author Ruth E. Correll brings the Bible’s great story to life through accounts that include both genders. This guidebook features more than seventy selected Bible stories of the all-encompassing human male and female linkages in the family of origin, sexual encounter(s), and other functional affiliations in the wider community. In the book, they are labeled like this: BLOOD: father, daughter (FD); mother, son (MS); brother, sister (BS); SEX: husband, wife (HW); not married (NM); or PEERS: peers in the plot (PP) with no blood or sexual ties. These three kinds of bonds flow from the triune God’s all-encompassing love that offers a true family identity, ready mercy to heal and to bless, and graceful guidance into a life of good will and service. Correll, who has witnessed Bible stories stir and inspire adults for over fifty years, presents keen insights into the Bible, which gives witness to the character, actions, and purposes of God.

The Concubine's Child by Carol Jones Pdf

An evocative, multi-generational tale of a family haunted by the death of a young concubine. For fans of Dinah Jefferies and Amy Tan. In 1930s Malaya a sixteen-year-old girl, dreaming of marriage to her sweetheart, is sold as a concubine to a rich old man desperate for an heir. Trapped, and bullied by his spiteful wife, Yu Lan plans to escape with her baby son, despite knowing that they will pursue her to the ends of the earth. Four generations later, her great-grandson, Nick, will return to Malaysia, looking for the truth behind the facade of a house cursed by the unhappy past. Nothing can prepare him for what he will find. This exquisitely rich novel brings to life a vanished world – a world of abandoned ghost houses, inquisitive monkeys, smoky temples and a panoply of gods and demons. A world where a poor girl can be sold to fulfil a rich man's dream. But though he can buy her body, he can never capture her soul, nor quench her spirit. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: 'Compelling, atmospheric and emotional' 'Well-written, compelling... Women and Chinese Patriarchy by Maria Jaschok,Suzanne Miers Pdf

This collection reveals many forms of servitude that Chinese women have endured, and the avenues of escape open to some of them. The authors are anthropologists, historians and sociologists, but the book is enriched also by contributions from the participants - a social worker, a mui tsai, and a colonial civil servant. The chapters are based on original documentary or oral research and personal experience, and, throughout the book, the voices of the women, their owners and their missionary rescuers can be clearly heard.

Studies in the Religious Life of Ancient and Medieval India by Dineschandra Sircar Pdf

The Milinda Panha is, with good reason, a famous work of Buddhist literature, probably compiled in the first century B.C. It presents Buddhist doctrine in a very attractive and memorable form as a dialogue between a Bactrian Greek king, Milinda, who plays the `Devil`s Advocate` and a Buddhist sage, Nagasena. The topics covered include most of those questions commonly asked by Westerners such as If there is no soul, what is it that is reborn? and If there is no soul, who is talking to you now? This abridgement provides a concise presentation of this master-piece of Buddhist literature.
