The Life of George Washington (Classic Reprint) by Anna C. Reed Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of George Washington In the year 1486, a foot traveller, holding a boy by the hand, stopped at the gate of a convent in Spain, to ask for some bread and water for his wearied child. While he was receiving it from a kind Friar, he gave him a history of himself, and told him for what purpose he had come into that country. At that time, the inhabitants of Europe, Asia, and Africa, did not know that there was any other land than those continents, and some islands not very distant from them. The most learned men, who were endeavouring to increase their knowledge of geography, thought that the ocean surrounded those countries like a great belt, and Christopher Columbus, the stranger who stood at the convent gate, was perhaps the first person who thought that belt might be crossed to the land on the opposite side; which was supposed to be the eastern part of Asia. He vas born about the year 1436, and was the son of a wool-comber, who lived in a city of Italy, called Genoa, and Avho was too poor to give him much education; but Columbus was very attentive to the instructions which he received in the few years that he went to school. "In the present volume a clear narrative has been attempted in a very condensed form, omitting and avoiding such technical and abstruse expressions as frequently occur in larger works, and aiming chiefly to be understood by the boys for whom it has been written. In preparing it the writer is largely indebted to the three able biographers above mentioned, especially Sparks and Irving, to whose full and detailed accounts she refers all those who wish to study the subject more minutely."--Preface.

Excerpt from The Life of George Washington: In Words of One Syllable George had a small axe of which he was quite proud, and boy-like, he cut right and left with it, and thought not of the harm he might do. On the lawn stood a small tree which his fa - ther hoped to see grow up to a good height and to bear fine fruit. Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by Washington Irving Pdf

Excerpt from Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 3 The following work has long been announced as forth-coming, to the great annoyance of the author. It was, indeed, commenced several years since, but the prosecution of it has been repeatedly interrupted by other occupations, by a long absence in Europe, and by occasional derangement of health. It is only within the last two or three years that I have been able to apply myself to it steadily. This is stated to account for the delay in its publication. The present volume treats of the earlier part of Washington's life previous to the war of the Revolution, giving his expeditions into the wilderness, his campaigns on the frontier in the old French war, and the other "experience," by which his character was formed, and he was gradually trained up and prepared for his great destiny. Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 5 (Classic Reprint) by Washington Irving Pdf

Excerpt from Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 5 I have endeavored to execute my task with can dor and fidelity; stating facts on what appeared to be good authority, and avoiding as much as possible all false coloring and exaggeration. My work is founded on the correspondence of Washington, which, in fact, affords the amplest and surest groundwork for his biography. This I have consulted as it ex ists in manuscript in the archives of the Department of State, to' which I have had full and frequent ac cess. I have also made frequent use of Washing ton's Writings, as published by Mr. Sparks a care ful collation of many of them with the originals hav ing convinced me of the general correctness of the collection, and of the safety with which it may be re lied upon for historical purposes; and I am happy to bear this testimony to the essential accuracy of one whom I consider among the greatest benefactors to our national literature; and to whose writings and researches I acknowledge myself largely indebted throughout my work. Excerpt from The Life of George Washington: Studied Anew Have been satisfied for many years that the time had come for a new view of the life and character of George Washington, a view to be taken after a careful study of his own memoranda, prepared for the history of his own life. As the reader of this book will learn, he left arranged in careful order for reference, perhaps more materials for his biography than any man of his century. But a certain habit of deifying him, a habit which I have attempted to explain in the last chapter, has thus far prevented writers of his life from approach ing the study of the man in the way in which writers would address themselves to most biographical sub jects.
