IT is only within a very recent period that ethnology has become a scientific study, and the African Continent is to this day almost unbroken ground. The older missionaries paid but little attention to the habits and customs of the people among whom they laboured, except in so far as they bore some relation to their own work of bringing men under the influence of the Gospel. Heathen customs were regarded as revolting and immoral. They were not spoken of nor written about when it was at all possible to avoid them. I am not acquainted with any book which deals exhaustively with native customs and habits. Folk-lore and poetry is still practically unbroken ground. It is impossible to treat this subject exhaustively in a single chapter. It would require a volume to itself, and I intend to do no more than introduce my readers to the social primitive life and habits of the people before they came under the influence of European thought and civilisation. These are fast passing away in the southern portion of the continent, and much difficulty is at times experienced in distinguishing between what is ancient and properly African, and what is the result of European influence.
