Chris Darke assesses whether the last decade of the 20th century was one in which cinema, as a medium and collective experience, became part of the converging field of multi-media and whether we need to consider new possibilities for the moving image.

Comparison of Behind-the-lens Meter Readings and Incident Light Meter Readings in Producing 35mm Color Slides for Technical Training Classes by Edgar A. Smith Pdf
The study reported here relates to the possibility that behind-the-lens meters in 35mm cameras might facilitate the taking of colored slides by simplifying the technique for determining exposure. A series of test slides, representing various types of slides used in technical training classes, briefings, and presentations was made and evaluated. These pictures included indoor shots of charts, graphs, newspaper clippings, colored posters, and live subjects. The data indicate that exposure estimates obtained from behind-the-lens meters vary significantly from those obtained from incident light meters. In approximately one-half of the 48 cases compared, the difference was at least one f-stop. The difference was not systematic but varied in both degree and direction. When viewing the slides in pairs, both a group of 37 university students and a group of 17 adult members of a photography club exhibited a strong tendency to find the slide based on the incident light meter to be more acceptable than the slide based on the behind-the-lens meter. NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS WINNER — TECHNOLOGY As the world rolls out transformational 5G services, it has become increasingly clear that China may be able to disrupt—or even access—the wireless networks that carry our medical, financial, and even military communications. This insider story from a telecommunications veteran uncovers how we got into this mess—and how to change the outcome. In Wireless Wars: China's Dangerous Domination of 5G and How We're Fighting Back, author Jon Pelson explains how America invented cellular technology, taught China how to make the gear, and then handed them the market. Pelson shares never-before-told stories from the executives and scientists who built the industry and describes how China undercut and destroyed competing equipment makers, freeing themselves to export their nation’s network gear—and their surveillance state. He also reveals China’s successful program to purchase the support of the world’s leading political, business, and military figures in their effort to control rival nations’ networks. What’s more, Pelson draws on his lifelong experience in the telecommunications industry and remarkable access to the sector’s leaders to reveal how innovative companies can take on the Chinese threat and work with counterintelligence and cybersecurity experts to prevent China from closing the trap. He offers unparalleled insights into how 5G impacts businesses, national security and you. Finally, Wireless Wars proposes how America can use its own unique superpower to retake the lead from China. This book is about more than just 5G wireless services, which enable self-driving cars, advanced telemedicine, and transformational industrial capabilities. It’s about the dangers of placing our most sensitive information into the hands of foreign companies who answer to the Chinese Communist Party. And it’s about the technology giant that China is using to project its power around the world; Huawei, a global super-company that has surged from a local vendor to a $120 billion-a-year behemoth in just a few years. For anyone curious about the hottest issue at the intersection of technology and geopolitics, Wireless Wars offers an immersive crash course and an unforgettable read.
Light Reading: Reflections in Poetry and Prose by Beth Richards Pdf
Beth Richards writes: 'I've always maintained that writing poetry (and other forms of creative writing) is a gift from God.' Here, again, the creative muse continues to inspire Beth-hence this latest book of short stories and poetry entitled Light Reading. (Discerning readers will, of course, appreciate the pun on the word Light, hopefully made clearer by Beth's oil painting of the Baccaro Lighthouse, in Nova Scotia, on the front cover!) Beth really enjoys writing 'free verse', and so there are quite a number of these in this latest book of hers. It appears to come frequently and naturally to her. This way she is able to delve into her subconscious so that the poems-and the stories that follow, too-become reflections of some of her innermost thoughts. In the short stories she also has the remarkable gift of being able to project herself into, and identify with, a character from a completely different walk of life and sphere of experience-the mark of a true creative genius

There's tender romance, violence, love and perversion. There's mature content. There's immature content. It's pretty much got it all.
