Lighthouse Seeds by Pamela Love Pdf

When her father, a Maine lighthouse keeper, is transferred to a station on a barren island far offshore, Sarah is quick to note how much her mother misses the flowers she used to grow in her garden on the mainland. Determined to reverse her mother's melancholy, the girl hatches a plot to put soil in the cracks and crevices of the ledge and to plant seeds there. Lo and behold, they bloom, delighting not only Sarah's family but also the local fishermen. The book is based on a true story about the light at Mount Desert Rock around the turn of the nineteenth century.

THE PHENOM by Kenneth R. Thomas Pdf

An eight-month pregnant woman visits a gypsy fortune teller at a summer carnival in 1943. The fortune teller looks into the woman’s eyes and says the woman has a troubled soul. The gypsy also says that the woman has a “dark cloud” in her life that must be discarded if she and the baby in her womb are to have happy lives. The woman asks about the baby and is told that it is a boy and that the boy will be able to do something better than anyone else in the world. Five years later the gypsy offers a similar, but complementary prediction to another pregnant woman, and the stage is set for an epic battle between good and evil on the baseball diamond. The book focuses primarily on the development of Billy Diamond from a Little League sensation to a Major League relief pitching icon. Although Billy’s mother is successful initially in ridding herself of the dark cloud and makes a wonderful life for herself and Billy, the dark cloud remains a threat to their happiness. In the end, Billy must decide whether to comply with the nefarious demands of the dark cloud or use all of his magical assets to do what he does best on the baseball diamond…throw an incredible fastball. The future of his family hangs in the balance.

Eliza Wheeler’s luminous paintings feature gorgeous landscapes, lush foliage and charming details. Corpus Approaches to Evaluation by Susan Hunston Pdf

Phraseology, as explored in corpus linguistics, is important to the study of evaluative language. Corpus techniques reveal this phraseology and so assist in, for example, identifying modal meaning and intensifying phrases. The patterns identified by corpus techniques can be used in identifying and parsing instances of evaluation.

Little Mushroom by Shisi Pdf

“Until the day humanity falls.” In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases. In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe. An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot. But An Zhe's mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng's eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds… Silver Award Winner of 2021’s Xingyun Awards for Global Chinese Science Fiction for Best Original Novel

Regardfully Yours by Ferdinand von Mueller Pdf

Of German origin, Ferdinand von Mueller migrated to Australia in 1847. Government Botanist of Victoria for 43 years until his death in 1896, he was Australia's greatest scientist of the 19th century - a major contributor to international science, an intrepid explorer of parts of Australia previously unknown to Europeans, and a dominant figure in the scientific and intellectual life of his adopted country. Throughout his working life, Mueller kept up an enormous correspondence. Large numbers of letters by or to him have been located throughout the world, and edited for publication. These constitute a major new research tool for both Australian historians and historians of science. They are also of fundamental importance to Australian taxonomic botany, for Mueller introduced vast numbers of Australian plants to western science. This is the third and final volume of Mueller's selected correspondence. It covers the last two decades of his life - his most productive period from a scientific point of view - including his work as Government Botanist of Victoria; his multifarious contributions to taxonomy, biogeography and economic botany; his engagement with the exploration of inland Australia, New Guinea and Antarctica; his manifold links with international science; and his evolving personal circumstances as one of the leading citizens of his adopted country. This volume contains a substantial historical introduction, and a further extension of the editorial apparatus developed in previous volumes.

Tattooed Bodies by James Martell,Erik Larsen Pdf

The essays collected in Tattooed Bodies draw on a range of theoretical paradigms and empirical knowledge to investigate tattoos, tattooing, and our complex relations with marks on skin. Engaging with diverse disciplinary perspectives in art history, continental philosophy, media studies, psychoanalysis, critical theory, literary studies, biopolitics, and cultural anthropology, the volume reflects the sheer diversity of meanings attributed to tattoos throughout history and across cultures. Essays explore conceptualizations of tattoos and tattooing in Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Lacan, Agamben, and Jean-Luc Nancy, while utilizing theoretical perspectives to interpret tattoos in literary works by Melville, Beckett, Kafka, Genet, and Jeff VanderMeer, among others. Tattooed Bodies prompts readers to explore a few significant questions: Are tattoos unique phenomena or an art medium in need of special theoretical exploration? If so, what conceptual paradigms and theories might best shape our understanding of tattoos and their complex ubiquity in world cultures and histories?
