Lightning Protection for Historic Structures by Charles Elbert Fisher Pdf

Preservation Brief 50 The loss of historic buildings as a result of lightning strikes makes local front page news every year. Lightning strikes make no distinction between historic properties and other types of structures. Historic barns, churches, museums, homes, stores, factories, lighthouses, schools, and other buildings, as well as structures such as tall monuments, may be at unnecessary risk of damage or loss as a result of a strike by lightning. The insurance industry reports that 5% of all claims are lightning-related in the U.S., with annual building damage estimated as high as $1 billion according to Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Certain types of structures are especially susceptible to damage, particularly churches where lightning accounts for nearly one-third of all church-building fires each year. This Preservation Brief, part of the Renovation & Historic Preservation resources collection produced by the US Department of Interior, National Park Service, (Technical Preservation Services) is designed for owners, property managers, architects, contractors, and others involved in the preservation of historic structures. It includes information on the care, maintenance, and repair of historic and older lightning protection systems; discusses factors to consider in assessing the need for a lightning protection system where none exists; and includes historic preservation guidance on the design and installation of new systems. Conservation of Historic Buildings by Bernard Feilden Pdf

Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden's Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Leading practitioners around the world have praised the book as being the most significant single volume on the subject to be published. This third edition revises and updates a classic book, including completely new sections on conservation of Modern Movement buildings and non-destructive investigation. The result of the lifetime's experience of one of the world's leading architectural conservators, the book comprehensively surveys the fundamental principles of conservation in their application to historic buildings, and provides the basic information needed by architects, engineers and surveyors for the solution of problems of architectural conservation in almost every climatic region of the world. This edition is organized into three complementary parts: in the first the structure of buildings is dealt with in detail; the second focuses attention on the causes of decay and the materials they affect; and the third considers the practical role of the architect involved in conservation and rehabilitation. As well as being essential reading for architects and others concerned with conservation, many lay people with various kinds of responsibility for historic buildings will find this clearly written, jargon-free work a fruitful source of guidance and information.

Lightning Engineering: Physics, Computer-based Test-bed, Protection of Ground and Airborne Systems by Paul Hoole,Samuel Hoole Pdf

This book gives a contemporary and comprehensive overview of the physics of lightning and protection systems, based on nearly 40 years of research, teaching, and consultancy work in this area. The book begins with an overview of the climatology of lightning and electric storms, as well as giving insight into lightning discharge from the preliminary discharges or processes such as corona, stepped leader, and subsequent return strokes, including the important submicrosecond threats and continuous current. The subsequent chapters present measures of lightning threat analysis to aircraft and electric power systems, protection measures to be used in high-voltage to low-voltage computer and communication systems, as well as to commercial and domestic buildings. The book discusses challenges posed by the submicrosecond lighting current changes and climate change to present and future high-voltage apparatus and structures (including carbon composite aircraft and new buildings) exposed to lightning strikes. Including worked examples, illustrations, and detailed analysis, Lightening Engineering will be of interest to electrical engineers, as well as researchers and graduate students.

Lightning Protection for People and Property by Marvin M. Frydenlund Pdf

The word lightning conjures up many different thoughts, depending on who you are. For instance, an engineer might wonder, "How can I protect this building?" A computer manager might ask, "What protection is available to save my equip ment?" A golf course manager wants to warn golfers about life-saving measures to take during a lightning storm. And on and on the needs go. In fact, the variety of backgrounds of people who need to understand lightning, its effects, and pro tection techniques ranges from the highly technical to the illiterate, creating a very difficult educational problem for the lightning protection industry. In this book, Marvin Frydenlund presents a refreshingly new melding of the many pieces of the lightningjigsaw puzzle that are scattered throughout numerous libraries, magazine and newspaper articles, codes, standards, statistics, research, and the enormous body of information called "old wives' tales, myths, opinions, and snake oil sales literature." He has created a broad-spectrum review of the en tire field oflightning that is easy to read and understand, and it will benefit anyone who wants to study and comprehend the subject.

Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... neutral, or to ground, with 3800 volts between any two outside wires. The copper economy and regulation are almost as good as in a 3800 volt 3 wire 3 phase system, while the voltage strains to ground which have to be met are only those of a 2200 volt circuit. Since the size of the conductors vary inversely as the square of the voltage a large saving in line material can sometimes be made by using this system. Design of Distribution Systern.--In the design of a rural distribution system, the engineer is confronted by several economic problems which are different from those encountered in either a city distribution system or in a long distance power transmission line. The load will in general be small and widely distributed and will be subject to large fluctuations. The lighting load will, of course, obey the same general laws that apply in any distribution system, but motors will be used at infrequent intervals, and consequently high peaks may occur at unexpected times, while the average load will be low. These peaks will not affect the station as they will generally occur at times when the plant is lightly loaded. Also they will be far below the capacity of the plant, but they may tax the ability of the distribution system to deliver power with good regulation. As the average load is small and as absolute continuity of service is not essential a construction of a light character is permitted and even necessary if the central station is to realize a profit. The fixed charges on the cost of the conductors will usually exceed the cost of the line loss. Therefore the smallest conductors that will give good regulation should be used. To keep down investment charges, the first pole line should be constructed as cheaply as is compatible with...
