Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage by Phebe Lowell Bowditch Pdf

This innovative study explores selected odes and epistles by the late-first-century poet Horace in light of modern anthropological and literary theory. Phebe Lowell Bowditch looks in particular at how the relationship between Horace and his patron Maecenas is reflected in these poems' themes and rhetorical figures. Using anthropological studies on gift exchange, she uncovers an implicit economic dynamic in these poems and skillfully challenges standard views on literary patronage in this period. Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage provides a striking new understanding of Horace's poems and the Roman system of patronage, and also demonstrates the relevance of New Historicist and Marxist critical paradigms for Roman studies. In addition to incorporating anthropological and sociological perspectives, Bowditch's theoretical approach makes use of concepts drawn from linguistics, deconstruction, and the work of Michel Foucault. She weaves together these ideas in an original approach to Horace's use of golden age imagery, his language concerning public gifts or munera, his metaphors of sacrifice, and the rhetoric of class and status found in these poems. Horace and the Gift Economy of Patronage represents an original approach to central issues and questions in the study of Latin literature, and sheds new light on our understanding of Roman society in general.

Like Father, Like Son by Rod Fisher Pdf

This study evolved from the author’s examination of a series of sketches undertaken by a young Englishman during his sojourn in Brisbane, the seat of government of the newly created Colony of Queensland. Initial research revealed a somewhat hazy outline of his ancestry and early life, until an independent researcher in the UK, preparing a photographic study of his subsequent built legacy, discovered a key piece of the jigsaw. This book is the culmination of the author’s subsequent research, carried out in three corners of the globe, which now shines a definitive light on the lineage of Richard Harding Watt. He was a wealthy business man and developer of a number of distinctive heritage listed buildings in Knutsford, perhaps best known as the model for Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel Cranford.

Like Father, Like Son by Thomas Allan Smail Pdf

What does being made in the image of God mean if God is Father, Son and Spirit? In Like Father, Like Son Tom Smail offers an answer to this question based on the doctrine of the Trinity, asserting that we are only human when we reflect the relationship between Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The book focuses on what it is to be like each part of the Trinity focusing in particular on the initiating love of the Father, the responsive love of the Son and the creative love of the Holy Spirit. Interacting with sociological, theological and personal issues of concern on a day-to-day level, Like Father, Like Son is relevant to Christian living in both the church and the world.
