LIMNOLOGY AND BIODYNAMICS OF ALGAL FLORA by Dr. Vaibhavi Prashant Patil Pdf

Water is indeed a wonderful universal solvent. It has unique parameter of dissolving and carrying in suspension a huge variety of chemicals. Thus water is the “elixir” of life. Modern civilization is dependent on water for irrigation, industry, domestic needs, shipping and of increasing importance for sanitation and disposal of waste. 75 percent of the surface of the earth is covered with salt water and fresh water. It is present in water bodies such as ocean, ponds, dams, lakes, streams, rivers, mountains with ice-caps etc. About 97 percent of earth’s water is found in ocean, 2 percent is frozen as ice in pole and remaining 1 percent is available to us in the form of fresh water in as rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and ground water.

Freshwater Algae of North America by John D. Wehr,Robert G. Sheath,J. Patrick Kociolek Pdf

Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies

This book gives a comparative treatment of topics accross lake, reservoir, and rive ecosystems. These analysis do indeed indicate differences among the properties of lakes, land-water interface regions, reservoirs, and rivers. Importantly, these analysis also indicate marked commonality in function.

Algal Ecology by Anonim Pdf

Algae are an important component of aquatic benthic ecosystems because they reflect the health of their environment through their density, abundance, and diversity. This comprehensive and authoritative text is divided into three sections to offer complete coverage of the discussion in this field. The first section introduces the locations of benthic algae in different ecosystems, like streams, large rivers, lakes, and other aquatic habitats. The second section is devoted to the various factors, both biotic and abiotic, that affect benthic freshwater algae. The final section of the book focuses on the role played by algae in a variety of complex freshwater ecosystems. As concern over environmental health escalates, the keystone and pivotal role played by algae is becoming more apparent. This volume in the Aquatic Ecology Series represents an important compilation of the latest research on the crucial niche occupied by algae in aquatic ecosystems. Presents algae as the important player in relation to environmental health Prepared by leading authorities in the field Includes comprehensive treatment of the functions of benthic algae as well as the factors that affect these important aquatic organisms Acts as an important reference for anyone interested in understanding and managing freshwater ecosystems

The Ecology of Algae by F. E. Round Pdf

This book looks at the actual habitats in which algae occur. The communities of the individual habitats such as open water, sediments, rocky shores, coral reefs, hot springs, sea ice, soil, etc., are then discussed with special phenomena highlighted, for example rhythmic activity, nitrogen fixation and buoyancy.

Limnological Analysis by Robert G. Wetzel,Gene E. Likens Pdf

Limnological Analyses, a classic, second, thoroughly updated edition, consists of a series of carefully designed and tested field and laboratory exercises covering the full scope of limnology. It provides the student with a solid foundation in this complex multidisciplinary field of ecology and illustrates modern experimental approaches. Among the topics covered by such exercises are: major physical components of lakes and streams; important mineral nutrients; cycling of organic matter; benthic fauna; primary productivity of phytoplankton; quantitative methods in biota analysis; diurnal changes; experimental manipulation of model ecosystems; effects of sewage outfall and other human activities; whole ecosystem and community analyses. Each exercise is preceded by an introductory section and concludes with questions for the student and a selection of suggested reading. Teachers and students of limnology will value Limnological Analyses for its highly structured, concise presentation. Its research-oriented approach encourages active participation.

Biogeography of Freshwater Algae by Jørgen Kristiansen Pdf

This book is based on a workshop on biogeography of freshwater algae held during the Fifth International Phycological Congress in China 1994. A group of outstanding specialists covering widely different approaches to the subject have been brought together, and this collection of their contributions forms a unique volume: there is no other book on the subject. It thus fills an evident gap in the phycological literature, and will be of major interest to researchers and teachers within phycology, limnology, and evolutionary biology. However, it may also be useful in courses for advanced students.

Freshwater Algae by Edward G. Bellinger,David C. Sigee Pdf

This is the second edition of Freshwater Algae; the popular guide to temperate freshwater algae. This book uniquely combines practical information on sampling and experimental techniques with an explanation of basic algal taxonomy plus a key to identify the more frequently-occurring organisms. Fully revised, it describes major bioindicator species in relation to key environmental parameters and their implications for aquatic management. This second edition includes: the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide an easily accessible source of information on algae within standing and flowing waters, and the problems they may cause the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readily observable morphological features that can be readily observed under a conventional light microscope up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomic status, analytical microtechniques and the potential role of computer analysis in algal biology upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extra species information, full colour photographs of live algae – including many new images from the USA and China Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highly specialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as a laboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquatic biologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners and researchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry and academia.

Algae Abstracts by Office of Water Resources Research Staff Pdf

Algae Abstracts is the first in a series of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/ Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.
