Linear and Nonlinear Programming by David G. Luenberger,Yinyu Ye Pdf
This new edition covers the central concepts of practical optimization techniques, with an emphasis on methods that are both state-of-the-art and popular. One major insight is the connection between the purely analytical character of an optimization problem and the behavior of algorithms used to solve a problem. This was a major theme of the first edition of this book and the fourth edition expands and further illustrates this relationship. As in the earlier editions, the material in this fourth edition is organized into three separate parts. Part I is a self-contained introduction to linear programming. The presentation in this part is fairly conventional, covering the main elements of the underlying theory of linear programming, many of the most effective numerical algorithms, and many of its important special applications. Part II, which is independent of Part I, covers the theory of unconstrained optimization, including both derivations of the appropriate optimality conditions and an introduction to basic algorithms. This part of the book explores the general properties of algorithms and defines various notions of convergence. Part III extends the concepts developed in the second part to constrained optimization problems. Except for a few isolated sections, this part is also independent of Part I. It is possible to go directly into Parts II and III omitting Part I, and, in fact, the book has been used in this way in many universities. New to this edition is a chapter devoted to Conic Linear Programming, a powerful generalization of Linear Programming. Indeed, many conic structures are possible and useful in a variety of applications. It must be recognized, however, that conic linear programming is an advanced topic, requiring special study. Another important topic is an accelerated steepest descent method that exhibits superior convergence properties, and for this reason, has become quite popular. The proof of the convergence property for both standard and accelerated steepest descent methods are presented in Chapter 8. As in previous editions, end-of-chapter exercises appear for all chapters. From the reviews of the Third Edition: “... this very well-written book is a classic textbook in Optimization. It should be present in the bookcase of each student, researcher, and specialist from the host of disciplines from which practical optimization applications are drawn.” (Jean-Jacques Strodiot, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1207, 2011)

Nonlinear Programming by Mokhtar S. Bazaraa,Hanif D. Sherali,C. M. Shetty Pdf
COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF NONLINEAR PROGRAMMING THEORY AND ALGORITHMS, THOROUGHLY REVISED AND EXPANDED Nonlinear Programming: Theory and Algorithms—now in an extensively updated Third Edition—addresses the problem of optimizing an objective function in the presence of equality and inequality constraints. Many realistic problems cannot be adequately represented as a linear program owing to the nature of the nonlinearity of the objective function and/or the nonlinearity of any constraints. The Third Edition begins with a general introduction to nonlinear programming with illustrative examples and guidelines for model construction. Concentration on the three major parts of nonlinear programming is provided: Convex analysis with discussion of topological properties of convex sets, separation and support of convex sets, polyhedral sets, extreme points and extreme directions of polyhedral sets, and linear programming Optimality conditions and duality with coverage of the nature, interpretation, and value of the classical Fritz John (FJ) and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions; the interrelationships between various proposed constraint qualifications; and Lagrangian duality and saddle point optimality conditions Algorithms and their convergence, with a presentation of algorithms for solving both unconstrained and constrained nonlinear programming problems Important features of the Third Edition include: New topics such as second interior point methods, nonconvex optimization, nondifferentiable optimization, and more Updated discussion and new applications in each chapter Detailed numerical examples and graphical illustrations Essential coverage of modeling and formulating nonlinear programs Simple numerical problems Advanced theoretical exercises The book is a solid reference for professionals as well as a useful text for students in the fields of operations research, management science, industrial engineering, applied mathematics, and also in engineering disciplines that deal with analytical optimization techniques. The logical and self-contained format uniquely covers nonlinear programming techniques with a great depth of information and an abundance of valuable examples and illustrations that showcase the most current advances in nonlinear problems.
Linear and Nonlinear Programming with Maple by Paul E. Fishback Pdf
Helps Students Understand Mathematical Programming Principles and Solve Real-World Applications Supplies enough mathematical rigor yet accessible enough for undergraduates Integrating a hands-on learning approach, a strong linear algebra focus, MapleTM software, and real-world applications, Linear and Nonlinear Programming with MapleTM: An Interactive, Applications-Based Approach introduces undergraduate students to the mathematical concepts and principles underlying linear and nonlinear programming. This text fills the gap between management science books lacking mathematical detail and rigor and graduate-level books on mathematical programming. Essential linear algebra tools Throughout the text, topics from a first linear algebra course, such as the invertible matrix theorem, linear independence, transpose properties, and eigenvalues, play a prominent role in the discussion. The book emphasizes partitioned matrices and uses them to describe the simplex algorithm in terms of matrix multiplication. This perspective leads to streamlined approaches for constructing the revised simplex method, developing duality theory, and approaching the process of sensitivity analysis. The book also discusses some intermediate linear algebra topics, including the spectral theorem and matrix norms. Maple enhances conceptual understanding and helps tackle problems Assuming no prior experience with Maple, the author provides a sufficient amount of instruction for students unfamiliar with the software. He also includes a summary of Maple commands as well as Maple worksheets in the text and online. By using Maple’s symbolic computing components, numeric capabilities, graphical versatility, and intuitive programming structures, students will acquire a deep conceptual understanding of major mathematical programming principles, along with the ability to solve moderately sized real-world applications. Hands-on activities that engage students Throughout the book, student understanding is evaluated through "waypoints" that involve basic computations or short questions. Some problems require paper-and-pencil calculations; others involve more lengthy calculations better suited for performing with Maple. Many sections contain exercises that are conceptual in nature and/or involve writing proofs. In addition, six substantial projects in one of the appendices enable students to solve challenging real-world problems.

This textbook on Linear and Nonlinear Optimization is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in operations research and related fields. It is both literate and mathematically strong, yet requires no prior course in optimization. As suggested by its title, the book is divided into two parts covering in their individual chapters LP Models and Applications; Linear Equations and Inequalities; The Simplex Algorithm; Simplex Algorithm Continued; Duality and the Dual Simplex Algorithm; Postoptimality Analyses; Computational Considerations; Nonlinear (NLP) Models and Applications; Unconstrained Optimization; Descent Methods; Optimality Conditions; Problems with Linear Constraints; Problems with Nonlinear Constraints; Interior-Point Methods; and an Appendix covering Mathematical Concepts. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises. The book is based on lecture notes the authors have used in numerous optimization courses the authors have taught at Stanford University. It emphasizes modeling and numerical algorithms for optimization with continuous (not integer) variables. The discussion presents the underlying theory without always focusing on formal mathematical proofs (which can be found in cited references). Another feature of this book is its inclusion of cultural and historical matters, most often appearing among the footnotes. "This book is a real gem. The authors do a masterful job of rigorously presenting all of the relevant theory clearly and concisely while managing to avoid unnecessary tedious mathematical details. This is an ideal book for teaching a one or two semester masters-level course in optimization – it broadly covers linear and nonlinear programming effectively balancing modeling, algorithmic theory, computation, implementation, illuminating historical facts, and numerous interesting examples and exercises. Due to the clarity of the exposition, this book also serves as a valuable reference for self-study." Professor Ilan Adler, IEOR Department, UC Berkeley "A carefully crafted introduction to the main elements and applications of mathematical optimization. This volume presents the essential concepts of linear and nonlinear programming in an accessible format filled with anecdotes, examples, and exercises that bring the topic to life. The authors plumb their decades of experience in optimization to provide an enriching layer of historical context. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and masters students in management science, operations research, and related fields." Michael P. Linear and Nonlinear Programming by Stephen G. Nash,Ariela Sofer Pdf
A complete and unified introduction to applications, theory and algorithms which contains modelling examples, computer based exercises and material on interior point methods and trust-region methods. Gives both numerical methods for optimisation and optomisation problems.
This book is intended to provide an introductory text of Nonlinear and Dynamic Programming for students of managerial economics and operations research. The author also hopes that engineers, business executives, managers, and others responsible for planning of industrial operations may find it useful as a guide to the problems and methods treated, with a view to practical applications. The book may be considered as a sequel to the author's Linear Programming in Industry (1960, 4th revised and enlarged edition 1974), but it can be used independently by readers familiar with the elements of linear programming models and techniques. The two volumes con stitute an introduction to the methods of mathematical programming and their application to industrial optimization problems. The author feels that the vast and ever-increasing literature on mathematical programming has not rendered an introductory exposition super fluous. The general student often tends to feel somewhat lost if he goes straight to the special literature; he will be better equipped for tackling real problems and using computer systems if he has acquired some previous training in constructing small-scale programming models and applying standard algorithms for solving them by hand. The book is intended to provide this kind of training, keeping the mathematics at the necessary minimum. The text contains numerous exercises. The reader should work out these problems for himself and check with the answers given at the end of the book. The text is based on lectures given at the University of Copenhagen.
