Lions of Scotland by Thomas E. Greenlaw Pdf

Since the beginning of recorded history, few people have fought longer and harder for their freedom and independence than the inhabitants of the diminutive nation of Scotland. From their earliest history they fought; Scots against the Picts; Scots against the Romans; and Scots against the English. Though outnumbered ten to one, for three centuries they fought with the English enduring many massacres, including King Edward I's annihilation, in 1296 A.D., of 8,000 men, women and children in the town of Berwick, held by Scotland at the time. By the start of the sixteenth century, there was a clear line between the two countries, a line that was repeatedly crossed by raiders (reivers) on both sides and many a skirmish escalated to a bloody battle. This relentless fighting continued until King James VI of Scotland was crowned King James I of England in 1603. Scottish resistance to the numerically superior English was sustained by powerful families in the Borders, such as the Scotts, the Kerrs, and especially the family of Humes led by the Lords of Hume Castle. This is the story of their struggle; their victories and defeats; their loves and losses; their trials and tribulations during a time of indecisive rulers, a crumbling Church, witchcraft and unimaginable treason, treachery and murder. Though a work of fiction, all the main events and characters were gleaned from the chronicles of Scottish history.

Ken Scotland by Ken Scotland Pdf

Ken Scotland was born on 29 August 1936 within sight of Heriot's Goldenacre ground, which he would go onto grace with great panache and skill several years later. A prodigious talent at fly-half while at school, he was converted into a full-back during the international trials of 1957 and was capped in that position against France at Colombes just a few weeks later, scoring all of his country's points as the Scots recorded their first win on French soil since 1949. Having joined the army after leaving school, Scotland then attended Cambridge University and it was from there that he was selected for the 1959 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand. During this epic four-month tour he won plaudits far and wide as one of the superstars of the Lions' team. Using entries from the dairy he kept during this tour, Scotland brings to life one of the great Lions expeditions, taking us right into the heart of the changing rooms, hotels, bars and in the heat of battle on the field. Scotland played in five Tests for the Lions and won a total of twenty-seven caps for his country before retiring in 1965 with a reputation as one of the finest players ever to play for Scotland well established. He would continue to play club rugby for several years afterwards while enjoying a successful business career. At eighty-three he has finally decided to tell his life story. Working with Allan Massie, the doyen of Scottish rugby journalism, he has created a rich and powerful testimony to his life and rugby career, throwing new light on his own achievements as well as providing fresh insight the great players of his era. It is as fascinating as it is evocative of a time and a game long past and a must-read for rugby fans of all generations.

Victoria's Scottish Lion by Adrian Greenwood Pdf

From humble Glasgow beginnings, Colin Campbell rose to become Scotland's finest general and a favourite of Queen Victoria. In his fifty-year career he fought through the Peninsula, the Crimea, China and India, and still found time to contain a slave revolt, a Chartist revolution and Ireland's Tithe War. Through a combination of personal courage, compassionate leadership and genius for military strategy he became an idol for the men who served under him. This undisputed hero, whose memory has grown faint beside celebrated warriors of the Victorian age, was a soldier ahead of his time – the first working-class field marshal, with strong humanitarian leanings and an instinct for harnessing the power of the press. In the first major biography of Campbell since 1880 his career is radically reinterpreted and the life of this very private man is revealed. Victoria's Scottish Lion was shortlisted for The Society for Army Historical Research's 2015 Templar Prize.

Heraldry in Scotland - J. H. Stevenson by Bruce Durie Pdf

Stevenson's Heraldry in Scotland (1914) is the most authoritative and most readable modern treatise on the legal and administrative aspects of Scots heraldry and a must for the serious student of the subject. Unfortunately, it is hard to find except at great expense in antiquarian bookshops and on specialist websites. This new edition brings a classic of the field to a new audience at a reasonable price. The two volumes have been amalgamated into one, and slight rearrangements made, but the contents follow almost exactly the Maclehose Glasgow edition. The several colour illustrations could not be reproduced here except as half-tones, but are available for download at www.brucedurie.co.uk/books.htm. John Horne Stevenson MBE, KStJ, KC (1855-1939), was an advocate and genealogical lawyer. Bruce Durie BSc(Hons) PhD FSAScot FCollT FIGRS FHEA OMLJ is a Scottish genealogist, author, broadcaster and lecturer.

From Thistle to Lion by Carol Bain Pdf

From Thistle to Lion tells the astonishing story of this rapid ascent by one of Scotland's most extraordinary clubs. Ferranti, Meadowbank, Livingston - call it what you will - this unfashionable club has always been known as one of the friendliest in Scotland and one with family atmosphere. Yet, like all the best families, it has also had to face rows, splits and bitter controversy along the way. This long-awaited book reveals how Ferranti Thistle developed from a wartime factory team to become one of the best-run clubs in non-League Scottish football. And how they had to fight to be allowed to play in the Scottish Cup. The book sheds light on one of the many controversial episodes in this club's short history - the Football League forced it to change both its ground and its famous old name. It then details the most bitter controversy of all to hit the club - its decision to leave Edinburgh and head for Livingston.
