Mental Health and Deafness by Margaret Du Feu,Cathy Chovaz Pdf

The assessment and treatment of mental health concerns for Deaf individuals has been largely ignored and/or misunderstood by many mental health professionals. In Mental Health and Deafness, Margaret du Feu and Cathy Chovaz seek to rectify this by outlining current issues surrounding mental health and deafness. The book provides valuable information to professionals interested in expanding their knowledge of mental health and deafness, and the authors share their extensive clinical experience with the reader through a variety of case studies. The authors primarily focus on individuals who were born deaf or deafened early in life, but also describe the mental health aspects of acquired deafness and individuals with both deafness and blindness. Mental Health and Deafness begins by describing the historical and social context of deafness, and follows the life journey of a Deaf individual, focusing on parental reactions, language acquisition, and mental health disorders of children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Chapters cover relevant issues regarding assessment, treatment, and forensic and legal issues. The book concludes with an overview of service development.

Survey of Adult Literacy in Ontario by Stan Jones,Ontario. Ministry of Education Pdf

This report is designed to present data pertaining to Ontario from the Statistics Canada "Survey of Literacy Skills Used in Daily Activities" in which 9,500 adult Canadians were interviewed and tested. (In Ontario, 2,201 adults were interviewed and tested.) It is the first comprehensive report on the state of everyday reading skills of adults in the province. In most cases, a table and a graph provide alternate ways of looking at the information. Text in shaded boxes is intended to give background information that may be helpful in interpreting the data. Text commentary on the data is designed to provide a context for it. In some cases, data are marked with a (Q) to indicate that the number should be interpreted with caution; the actual numbers on which the estimate is based are small and the variability of the estimate is quite large. In cases where the actual numbers are so small that no reliable estimate can be provided, an asterisk marks where the results would be. Data are categorized as follows: reading skill levels of Ontario as a whole and by regions of Ontario; self-assessment of everyday reading skills; education and everyday reading; age and everyday reading; gender and everyday reading; immigration, language, and everyday reading; community and everyday reading; work and everyday reading; income and everyday reading; and daily life and everyday reading (relation of reading skill to various literate, social, cultural, and civic activities). All numbers reported here are weighted estimates (with the exception of those in Appendix C) reflecting the population of the province. Appendixes include descriptions of levels used in the survey, descriptions of survey instruments, description of survey sample, and national literacy statistics form the survey. A French language version of the report is included. (YLB)
