Continental-Crust Structures on the Continental Margin of Western North America by Henry V. Lyatsky Pdf
The NE Pacific Ocean is considered the birthplace of many fundamental ideas for modern plate tectonics theory. In this book the orogenic belts of this region are discussed in a single, internally consistent tectonic concept. Geological information is considered the most reliable. Geophysical models are tested for compatibility with observable geological data. The new concept avoids force-fitting interpretations to preconceived assumptions regarding accreted far-traveled terranes in the Cordillera and continental-oceanic plate interactions in the entire region.

Exploring the Earth's Crust by C. Prodehl,Walter D. Mooney Pdf
"This volume contains a comprehensive, worldwide history of seismological studies of the Earth's crust using controlled sources from 1850 to 2005. Essentially all major seismic projects on land and the most important oceanic projects are covered. The time period 1850 to 1939 is presented as a general synthesis, and from 1940 onward the history and results are presented in separate chapters for each decade, with the material organized by geographical region. Each chapter highlights the major advances achieved during that decade in terms of data acquisition, processing technology, and interpretation methods. For all major seismic projects, the authors provide specific details on field observations, interpreted crustal cross sections, and key references. They conclude with global and continental-scale maps of all field measurements and interpreted Moho contours. An accompanying DVD contains important out-of-print publications and an extensive collection of controlled-source data, location maps, and crustal cross sections."--Publisher's description.

Making and Moving Knowledge by John Sutton Lutz,Barbara Neis Pdf
It has been clear for some time that research does not automatically translate into knowledge, nor does knowledge necessarily translate into wisdom. Whether the immediate challenge is global warming, epidemic disease, poverty, environmental degradation, or social fragmentation, research efforts are wasted if we cannot devise efficient and understandable processes to create and transfer knowledge to policy makers, interested groups, and communities. How to maximize the impact of scholarly research and combine it with practical knowledge already available in lay communities are key issues in a world threatened with social-ecological disasters. Making and Moving Knowledge focuses directly on how knowledge is created and transferred or is blocked and atrophies. It places knowledge generated by universities and governments beside practical knowledge from coastal aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities and looks at how different kinds of knowledge flow in different directions. Concentrating on intellectually fertile spaces at the edges of disciplines and the rich socio-ecological interfaces where land meets sea, authors demonstrate their commitment to knowledge transfer in their work, showing how knowledge transfer can be considered theoretically, methodologically, and practically."

Till Geochemistry of Northern Vancouver Island Area (92L/5, 6W, 11W, 12) by P. T. Bobrowsky,S. J. Sibbick,British Columbia. Geological Survey Branch Pdf
Presents results of a drift prospecting program conducted on northern Vancouver Island in an area south and west of Port Hardy. The three-year till geochemistry project discussed is one of several provincial till geochemistry surveys to demonstrate the utility of integrating surficial geological mapping and exploration geochemical methods to locate buried mineral deposits in areas of drift-covered terrain. The study consisted of a systematic sampling program of primary basal till and colluviated till deposits which were first identified and then targeted during surficial mapping. Pebble lithology studies were conducted at each of the till sample stations. The bulk of the report consists of tables, graphs, and element concentration maps. An introductory section reviews the study area's surficial geology, describes the survey methodology, and interprets data related to some of the more important elements associated with mineral deposits, such as lead, copper, gold, silver, zinc, and iron.
