Sun Down by Jeff R. Wright Pdf

When Jackson Wright was killed in a freak accident on the front lawn of his house, just shy of his ninth birthday, his close-knit and loving family found themselves utterly devastated and adrift, unsure of how to even go about the process of moving forward without him. With the support of friends, family, and an amazing community, they managed to keep going through those unbelievably painful first days, which included the service for Jackson and returning to their home without him afterward. In the weeks and months that followed, Jackson’s father found some comfort and release in the writing of an online blog, through which he kept his circle of extended family and friends informed about his family’s progress, avoiding the repetitive cycle of awkward questions and painful answers. Sundown expands on that blog, telling the story of an amazing young boy, the impact he had on those around him, and his family’s inspiring journey towards a new normal. It is just one part of an amazing legacy inspired by an incredible little boy who was taken far too soon. With surprising insight, wisdom, and humor, the story takes its audience on a raw and relatable journey of determination and survival. It will change the way you look at love and loss, and inspire you to hold your loved ones closer than ever, leaving nothing between you unsaid.

Fly Home, Little Bird by Beverly Shellrude Thompson Pdf

Fly Home, Little Bird is Beverly's memoir, which focuses on the unexpected consequences of her parents becoming evangelical missionaries. The story arc includes living in a residential school spanning ten years where she was abused by the school nurse and other dorm parents. As an adult she also became a missionary. In her mid-thirties she had the agency to leave the church and create a life outside evangelical communities. Beverly became an activist for reform and change in the policies and practices of reporting abuse of children in mission agencies in both the U.S. and Canada. This included holding a "prayer vigil" at the C&MA's annual conference to put public pressure on them to investigate allegations of abuse (it worked). She has co-founded on-line Facebook groups which have many members from a plethora of mission boarding schools and agencies. And she is one of eight former MK's featured in a documentary, All God's Children. The documentary has been widely viewed in communities of former MK's and their families as well as in churches. Perhaps the most important thread in Fly Home Little Bird is how, with therapeutic help, she changed the web of intergenerational trauma within her immediate family.

End of Pawnee Starlight by Shawn J. Farritor Pdf

The Battle of Massacre Canyon occurred in an indistinguishable valley in southwestern Nebraska on August 5, 1873. Fought between a Pawnee hunting expedition and a Sioux war party, the destruction of the Pawnee shocked the nation as a whole and inspired fear and speculation within the young state of a bloody plains war. As the last great confrontation between American Indian tribes on the North American continent the battle was a harbinger of the removal of both tribes from their beloved Nebraska homelands by the end of the decade. In Shawn J Farritors first novel, End of Pawnee Starlight, memorable characters are drawn from the chapters of Nebraska history to create a stirring account of the final years of the Pawnee Nation within the state. The well-meaning but inexperienced trail agent, John Williamson, finds himself engulfed by the deadly responsibility of escorting the Pawnee on their doomed final hunt as he attempts to charm a proud Pawnee girl. The dignified Great Pawnee Chief, Petalasharo, struggles to keep his people on the lands of their ancestors. The formidable warrior Sky Chief leads his people into disaster on their summer buffalo hunt. The hardened arm scout, Frank North, and his more reflective younger brother, Luther North, assist the Pawnee in their terrible warfare with the powerful Sioux. In the end, neither tribe won the Battle of Massacre Canyon. The Pawnee and Sioux were fighting over access to hunting grounds that the American government had recently, and unilaterally, determined were not theirs to claim.

Little Bird Flies by Karen McCombie Pdf

Nominated for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie Medal Bridie lives on the remote Scottish island of Tornish, the youngest of three sisters. Although she loves her island, with its wild seas and big skies, she guiltily nurses a secret dream of flight - to America and the freedom of the New World. But her family are struggling under the spiteful oppression of the new Laird, and it seems that even some of the Laird's own household are desperate to leave. When the Laird's full cruelty becomes apparent, there's no more time for daydreams as Bridie needs to help the people she loves escape to safety. Cover and chapter head illustrations by Jasu Hu. Map illustration by Hannah Horn. The first in a gripping, dramatic new series from much-loved author, Karen McCombie. "This involving, evocative tale, narrated by Bridie with a hint of period language, is a study of rich and poor, offering clearly-drawn characters."- Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times, Children's Book of the Week "There's heart in this Scottish adventure. . . This is (Karen's) best. It has a vivid setting, emotional punch and characters to really care about." - Alex O'Connell, The Times, Children's Book of the Week "It may all seem a far cry from the "slushy, gushy love songs" of Ally's World. And yet here, as there, McCombie displays her gift, which is to create a narrator who sounds thoroughly convincing, and to inhabit the consciousness of a child." Emily Bearn, The Telegraph "Little Bird Flies by Karen McCombie is the evocative and beautifully written tale of Bridie (Little Bird) who dreams of a bigger life than the one she's destined for on her tiny Scottish isle of Tornish. With themes of immigration and prejudice and characters you'll root for, this will appeal to fans of Emma Carroll and Marie-Louise Jensen." - Michelle Harrison, author of A Pinch of Magic

30 Birds by Hardy Wieting, Jr Pdf

Adventure book, travel book, history book, geography book, science book, birding book, laughing-out-loud book -- all wrapped around accounts of pursuing 30 different birds in North America. (This book is connected to a website, 30birds30.com). How different the areas to which we go here are from each other! The first account here takes place in the higher elevations of the Santa Catalina Mountains outside Tucson, Arizona. That is not like the pelagic zone. "Pelagic trips" are sea-going voyages that take birders, and other interested observers, out to the open ocean beyond coastal waters where certain birds, like Leach's Storm-petrel occur. The Everglades is a vast watery expanse, of course, and at times being there can even remind you of floating on a sea, but it is, of course, very different from the pelagic zone. That this Sonoran Desert you find yourself in is totally unlike Delaware or New Hampshire or the suburbs of Washington, DC -- or Pawnee National Grassland -- is a thought that occurs to even the most single-minded birder in pursuit of that next bird. After seeing a lot of birds, the idea finally dawned that it would be worthwhile and interesting to memorialize new ones by typing up an account of the adventure of getting to see them, something which by its very nature involves learning something about the bird itself and the place or places where the observation was accomplished. The more of these accounts I completed, the more I realized how much these latter two learnings add to the adventure. Everything about and inspired by these birds is thought-provoking and enjoyable. The details can be delightfully shocking: parasitism, for example, or blinding mammal infants, or "extra pair activity." The place can be just as absorbing as the bird. To investigation of the differences in ecosystems can be added differences in history, not geological history, though that of course can compel, but social and political history: the CCC, the internment camps, conquistadors, the San Francisco Earthquake, even computer code. The ground you trod upon in pursuit of that winged creature in the bush or on the plain has tales to tell. In one case, that of the Red-faced Warbler, I have gone back to a time before I made the "memorialize" decision, but for all others the accounts are of birds seen after the concept struck. I wish I could go back not just as I did with the warbler, but with all the other predecessors and reconstruct what happened. But that's the problem. If you don't memorialize, details disappear. The original accounts were centered on the pursuit, in a few cases that was all that there was. In preparing all of these for publication, I have added accounts of life history and range where that was absent or have enlarged substantially on it when some was originally included. I have added details to descriptions of places and incorporated research about history. All of which I enjoyed greatly. But a signal joy was rereading these accounts -- it comes close to having these experiences all over again. My hope is that readers of 30 Birds will be able to share in this joy and that it will inspire their own pursuits, all types of pursuits. Some may find accounts here eccentric: Supreme Court cases, ENIAC programmer, Florida dentist in Attu, war against Aguinaldo, English poets, Carl Linné, Marineland, murder, Hotspur, sibilicide, nominalism, Great White Fleet, Monophysitism, Theosophy, but I hope this is a virtue.
