Tell-Tales by Various Pdf

Every person has a tale to tell, a short story in them, a glimpse into someone else’s life and the things that have happened to them. Everyone has a voice, but not everyone has the courage to use it, to tell their tales with honesty and conviction. We found our voices over coffee and treats at Libby’s in Marple Bridge one dismal Wednesday morning in January. An idea was formed when a group of like-minded women friends decided to try to write some of these stories down to raise money for The Christie Hospital in Manchester. None of us has made any money from the writing of these stories. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? The first part, perhaps the most difficult part, was finding what to write about, experimenting with rhythm, style, tone and words to express our stories in a way we hoped would be of interest to someone else. But as our confidence increased and we bounced stories and ideas around between each other, writing and rewriting, we discovered that we liked the sound of our own voices! So, here are our offerings. We hope you will enjoy them, read them and hopefully, return to them occasionally. We hope to entertain you and to make you reflect on your own lives and experiences as you share ours. Sally Clegg & Sharon Goddard (Joint Editors) "Fiction is the art of the possible, of making imaginary words real, of being able, if only in a limited word-count, to put this world to rights. The best fiction is challenging and yet familiar, complex and yet sure of itself, able to disrupt or ruffle, but able also to smooth out differences, to restore, to heal. The stories in Tell Tales know a thing or two about the challenges of living and how they are to be overcome by generosity, attention and good faith. The stories, presented here anonymously in a spirit of inclusiveness all too rarely encountered, speak to lives that are knotty and difficult and at times impossible, as all our lives frequently are. They are sharp and clever, funny and kind. So is the project. All proceeds from the sale of this anthology go to the Christie Hospital which does such excellent work in caring for those who most need our care. I am happy to support this book, and I urge you to buy it for yourself and for everyone you know, to take heart from its big heart, and to enjoy it as I have done." Tales of the Punjab by Flora Annie Steel Pdf

Tales of the Punjab (1894) is a collection of stories translated and collected by Flora Annie Steel. Collected while Steel lived with her husband in the north of the Indian subcontinent, Tales of the Punjab was a successful introduction to legends and stories from the Punjab region for children and adults back home in England. Published while India remained under the control of the British Empire, Steel’s collection puts a decidedly Western twist on the stories she learned from local women while advocating for education reform. In a village in the Punjab, as the sun sets on an exceedingly hot day, the local people return from the fields to prepare dinner and settle down for the evening. As they await the cooling winds of midnight in order to sleep outside, the villagers gather around a local storyteller. Possessing a wide knowledge of legends, tales, and history, he calmly begins to speak to his gathered audience. “Sir Buzz” is the story of a woman and her son who are left in dire poverty following the death of her husband, a soldier. Although young, the boy dreams of setting out into the world in order to bring something home for his mother. Finding six shillings in the pocket of an old coat, he leaves his home only to run into an injured tigress. Unable to remove a thorn from her paw, she asks the boy for his assistance, and offers him a mysterious reward. In “The Rat’s Wedding,” a rat takes shelter underground during a steady rainstorm. In his digging, he discovers a root, which he takes with him on his journey homeward once the rain subsides. Looking forward to using the root for himself, he encounters an old man struggling to light a fire with wood soaked through with rain. Exchanging his root for a piece of food, the generous rat continues on his way. Tales of the Punjab is a collection of forty-three instructive, humorous, and authentic stories translated by Flora Annie Steel. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Flora Annie Steel’s Tales of the Punjab is a classic of Anglo-Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Rosie Little's Cautionary Tales for Girls by Danielle Wood Pdf

These are not, I should say at the outset, tales written for the benefit of good and well-behaved girls who always stick to the path when they go to Grandma's. Skipping along in their gingham frills - basket of scones, jam and clotted cream upon their arms - what need can these girls have for caution? Rather, these are tales for girls who have boots as stout as their hearts, and who are prepared to firmly lace them up (boots and hearts both) and step out into the wilds in search of what they desire. Taking her cues from the Brothers Grimm and Scheherazade, Rosie - a thoroughly modern Little Red Riding Hood - tells us of love and desire, men and women, heartache and happiness. Beguiling, clever and funny, Rosie Little's Cautionary Tales for Girls is a sheer delight. ss, wit, simplicity and directness, Rosie offers her clear-eyed, slyly funny and rueful take on life, love and everything in between.

Men of Men by Wilbur Smith Pdf

The second book in the epic Ballantyne series Zouga was left alone, as alone in spirit as he had ever been in any of his wanderings across the vast African continent. He had spent almost the last penny he owned on these few square feet of yellow earth at the bottom of this hot and dusty pit. He had no men to help him work it, no experience, no capital.' A tribal battle. An Empire's war. Zouga Ballantyne has in his blood a fanatic's need to find diamonds, one that will take him to Southern Africa's most punishing places. Losing his wife to one of the many sicknesses that haunt the diamond mine camp, Zouga and his sons must find another way through the country, helping to build the British Empire, and developing their own form of civilisation in the face of tribal opposition. But the Ballantyne family success comes at a price -the sacrifice of the local Matabele tribe, who have tried to live alongside the colonists, but are slowly losing everything. In the face of exploitation, violence and greed, who will triumph in the land of ruthless men?
