Liturgy, Theurgy, and Active Participation by Kjetil Kringlebotten Pdf

Providing a metaphysical grounding for liturgical participation, this book argues that "active participation" in the liturgy must be understood principally as our participation in God's act, particularly in the act of Christ, and only secondarily as our ritual involvement. Utilizing Neoplatonist philosophy, Kjetil Kringlebotten proposes that this should be understood in terms of theurgy, which is the human participation in divine action, which finds its consummation in the incarnation of Christ. Without the incarnation all acts will remain extrinsic and imposed but acts can become real and intrinsic precisely because the incarnation makes possible true union with the divine, a metaphysical union-in-distinction, without confusion, because this union is not extrinsic. Through union with Christ, as the one common focus of the divine-human relation, we can have true union with God and may offer true worship. In order to make sense of active participation, then, we need to understand theology in theurgic terms, where theurgy is understood not as a mechanical "coercion" of God but as a participation in His act, in creation and through Christ as the true theurgist, the "master theurgist," Whose work transforms our act and the liturgy.

Toward a Trinitarian Theology of Liturgical Participation by R. Gabriel Pivarnik Pdf

Half a century after the Second Vatican Council called for the active participation of the laity in the liturgy, a comprehensive theology of what liturgical participation actually means remains elusive. While most sacramental studies have highlighted the role and action of Christ, the conciliar reform and the theology that emanated from it call for a deeper trinitarian understanding of the liturgy and sacraments. In this fascinating new work, Gabriel Pivarnik identifies the major theological developments in the concept of active participation of the last century, most notably in Mediator Dei and the Vatican II documents. He also considers the reception of those developments. Drawing especially on the work of Cipriano Vagaggini and Edward Kilmartin, Pivarnik offers a lucid demonstration of how liturgical participation can be viewed in metaphysical, soteriological, and ecclesiological terms through the lens of a trinitarian narrative. R. Gabriel Pivarnik, OP, teaches theology at Providence College, where he also serves as director of the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies.

A New Look at Liturgy and the Principle of Active Participation (Volume Two) by Victor Usman Jamahh Pdf

Fifty-four years after the enthusiastic efforts at the implementations of the principle of active participation in the liturgy, certain disturbing signs abound with regard to the liturgy and how it is celebrated which do not conform with the positive effects that had been expected from the reception and implementation of this principle: More often than not the emphasis on what constitutes participation has centred more on the quantity and extent of what is done rather than the quality and content of what is done, which for me, is a false inversion. This is not in any way to relegate the role of doing something in the liturgy to the background-after all the soul always needs a body; but again, one must be able to go beyond just doing something to grasping the content of what is done or has been done. Is it possible that we have been looking at this principle from only one perspective-the external-without grasping the depths of it? Could we look at the other side: the internal and spiritual? This is what this book tries to achieve in a systematic and scholarly manner: to participate is to relate in a conscious, deliberate and active manner with Christ and all that He has revealed to us. Rev Fr Victor Usman Jamahh is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Minna, Nigeria who holds an STD from the University of Innsbruck, Austria (2013) with specialization in Liturgy. He is presently a formator at the Good Shepherd Major Seminary in Kaduna where he is also the Dean of Studies and teaches Introduction to Liturgy, Theology of the Liturgy, Practical Liturgy, Homiletics and Medieval Church History.

With One Spirit by Jozef Lamberts Pdf

Commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the promulgation of The Roman Missal (1970), With One Spirit embarks on a significant investigation into the history of this text and the principles that impacted its development. In particular, Lamberts examines whether and how The Roman Missal encourages the active participation of the faithful in the liturgy demanded by the Second Vatican Council. Considering this pastoral and theological context, With One Spirit offers a commentary of the possibilities and limitations of the Missal's encouragement of active participation, and formulates suggestions and improvements to realize true communal Eucharistic celebrations.

Vatican Council II by Elizabeth Harrington,David Orr,Carmel Pilcher Pdf

Sacrosanctum Concilium opened the door to all Christians to understand the contemporary challenge to their life and health, and it started with the reform of the liturgy. In the words of Paul VI the liturgy is the 'first source of life communicated to us, the first school of our spiritual life, the first gift we can give to Christian people by our believing and praying, and the first invitation to the world.' That is surely true for all of us.

The Active Participation Revisited by Jozef Lamberts Pdf

This book contains the papers that were delivered during the 16th liturgical colloquium of the Liturgical Institute of Leuven in October 2003. The colloquium dealt with the notion of 'active participation' on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Tra le sollecitudini and the 40th anniversary of Sacrosanctum Concilium. Paul De Clerck (Paris) presents a historical retrospect. Paul Post (Tilburg) gives a panorama of current ritual-liturgical inculturation. Thomas Pott (Rome) reflects on the spiritual dimension of liturgical participation. Liliane Voye (Louvain) deals with participation from a sociological point of view. Andre Haquin (Louvain) and Andre Goossens (Antwerp) discuss the challenges of a liturgical assembly.

A Living Sacrifice by Roland Millare Pdf

"A Living Sacrifice focuses on the inherent relationship between eschatology and the liturgy in light of Ratzinger's insistence upon the primacy of logos over ethos. When logos is subordinated to ethos, the human person becomes subjected to a materialist ontology that leads to an ethos that is concerned above all by utility and progress, which affects one's approach to understanding the liturgy and eschatology. How a person celebrates the liturgy becomes subject to the individual whim of one person or a group of people. Eschatology is reduced to addressing the temporal needs of a society guided by a narrow conception of hope or political theology. If the human person wants to understand his authentic sacramental logos, then he must first turn to Christ the incarnate Logos, who reveals to him that he is created for a loving relationship with God and others. The primacy of logos is the central hermeneutical key to understanding the unique vision of Ratzinger's Christocentric liturgical theology and eschatology. This is coupled with a study of Ratzinger's spiritual Christology with a focus on how it influences his theology of liturgy and eschatology through the notions of participation and communion in Christ's sacrificial love. Finally, this book examines Ratzinger's theology of hope, charity, and beauty, as well as his understanding of active participation in relationship to the eschatological and cosmic characteristics of the sacred liturgy"--

We Give Our Thanks Unto Thee by Porter C. Taylor Pdf

Fr. Alexander Schmemann continues to influence liturgical and sacramental theologies some thirty-five years after his death. Despite the wide acceptance within Protestant circles of his timeless classic, For the Life of the World, there has been relatively little written about him from an ecumenical context. This volume of collected essays seeks to explore his theological legacy and further his work. With essays from leading scholars such as David Fagerberg, Bruce Morrill, Joyce Zimmerman, and more, this volume is meant for both teachers and students of liturgical and sacramental theology. In an effort to introduce Schmemann to a wider audience and to celebrate his work through meaningful engagement and dialogue, contributors come from a wide variety of ecclesiastical backgrounds: Anglican, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Free Church, and more. ""The Eucharist is therefore the manifestation of the Church as the new aeon; it is participation in the Kingdom as the parousia, as the presence of the Resurrected and Resurrecting Lord. It is not the ''repetition'' of His advent or coming into the world, but the lifting up of the Church into His parousia, the Church''s participation in His heavenly glory."" Fr. Alexander Schmemann, Introduction to Liturgical Theology, p. 72. ""We have waited too long for exactly this book! Alexander Schmemann was, without question, the most profound liturgical theologian of the twentieth century. Yet, though his writings are eminently relevant to the church in general, up to this point they have been seriously engaged almost exclusively by fellow members of his Orthodox tradition and by members of one of the other ''higher'' liturgical traditions. Here, at last, we have a truly ecumenical engagement with Schmemann''s thought. Top scholars from a variety of ecclesiastical traditions offer illuminating interpretations of Schmemann''s texts, subject his thought to critique when that seems relevant, and then use his ideas in their own theological reflections on liturgy. Altogether, a superb contribution to the cause of liturgical theology."" --Nicholas Wolterstorff, Yale University ""In this collection, Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Reformed, and Evangelical essayists consider the life, work, and thought of Alexander Schmemann, whose contributions to sacramental theology, liturgical and pastoral reflection, and ecumenical engagement remain pertinent today. Readers familiar with Fr. Alexander will find here new interpretations by authors of different generations, while those not yet acquainted will come to understand the Orthodox theologian''s connections between theology, liturgy, life, Church, and world."" --Karen B. Westerfield Tucker, Boston University ""Porter Taylor assembles an expansive ecumenical group of authors, often from unexpected corners of Christianity, to connect, challenge, and extend Schmemann''s work into encounters with new research and questions. What better way to honor such a foundational figure in the field of liturgical theology?"" --Lizette Larson-Miller, Huron University ""For over fifty years, serious students of Christian worship have been stirred by the writings of the late Orthodox theologian Alexander Schmemann. This volume of equally outstanding essays not only pays tribute to his intellectual legacy, but also advances exciting new lines of inquiry for the next generation of ecumenical liturgical theologians who seek to follow in his footsteps."" --Melanie C. Ross, Yale Divinity School ""We Give Our Thanks Unto Thee, edited by Porter C. Taylor, brings together essays that honor Fr. Alexander Schmemann, both with its title, most apt for a eucharistic man, but also by means of its rich content. Roman Catholic, Reformed, Anglican, various evangelicals, and, of course, Orthodox join in offering perspectives by which we can better appreciate the light that continues to radiate to diverse places from this remarkable thinker and pastor, since
