Seveneves by Neal Stephenson Pdf

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years. What would happen if the world were ending? A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space. But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . . Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth. A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Blown Away by Richard Boothby Pdf

This powerful memoir follows a father’s journey to make sense of his world after losing his son to addiction and suicide. Fifteen years ago, Richard Boothby received a fateful call from his ex-wife that their twenty-three-year-old son, Oliver, was dead. Although Richard had been dreading this news, given Oliver’s prolonged struggle with drug dependency, nothing could have prepared him for the devastating shock. He became obsessed with uncovering the truth of why Oliver shot himself—had he been self-medicating an undiagnosed mental illness?—and what they could have done to prevent it. In an attempt to stem the pain, Boothby turned to psychoanalysis. He was no stranger to the concept—as a professor of philosophy, he had focused his career on the intersection between psychoanalytic theory and contemporary philosophy—but this was far from an academic exercise. Through his time in talk therapy, as well as psychedelic experiences in a research study on psilocybin, he would gradually find a sense of acceptance of the unknown, and a renewed appreciation for life. Exploring the epidemics of substance abuse and gun violence from an intimate perspective, Boothby’s poignant account of grief shows how the death of a loved one can in some ways bring us closer to them and ourselves.

Blown Away by Ninie Hammon Pdf

The sorceress of psychological suspense is back with the sixth book in her highly-anticipated new Nowhere USA series. Ninie Hammon is at her career-best in Blown Away — a story that keeps you guessing even as the secrets are revealed. Viola Tackett's oldest son plays a childish game with disastrous results. What might have remained a personal tragedy, blossoms into a town-wide catastrophe when he lies to his mother about what happened. Now Viola Tackett is hatching a diabolical plot to get revenge. Her plan endangers the life of every man, woman, and child in Nowhere County. Meanwhile, the Reverend Duncan Norman believes he's figured out who murdered his daughter from the clues in her diary, and he has no plans to turn the other cheek. When he goes in search of an eye for an eye, he's not willing to hear that he might have the wrong guy. As the residents of Nowhere County squabble among themselves and kill each other, The Jabberwock keeps on silently picking them off one by one. Time is running out for everyone. ★★★★★ "I don’t know how she does it, but each book in this Nowhere County series just gets better and better." -- Bonsterblack ★★★★★ "If you’ve been enjoying this roller coaster ride with us, the best (in my opinion) is waiting for you with Blown Away, Book 6 of the Nowhere series. If you haven’t been reading Ninie Hammon’s incredible journey through the Middle of Nowhere, why not? You are missing one of the best major thrillers ever written." -- Kate Hickey ★★★★★ "This is the 6th in a series of 7 novels about an incredible, unexplainable, maddening, murderous event that is taking place in a town called Nowhere. How in the wide world of sports is this going to end? I was expecting the 6th book to tie up some loose ends, and it only (delightfully) added more frayed ones. I love Ninie's writing because I'm on the edge of my seat for most of her books. Oh, and WAIT until you read the "rock climbing" section...I don't think I took a breath during the whole chapter!" -- K. Koch ★★★★★ "I am completely BLOWN AWAY by this addition to the Nowhere, USA series. Oh. My. Goodness. This has been brain-cramping from the start: I think I referred to it in an earlier review as the love child of Lost and The Twilight Zone. If that's true, then it's cousin must be Alice in Wonderland because things just keep getting "curiouser and curiouser."" -- Kentucky Bohemian Blown Away is the sixth book in Ninie Hammon's new series, Nowhere USA, a riveting psychological thriller about the residents of a forgotten county that inexplicably sinks through reality to find itself in the middle of Nowhere. Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will find themselves right at home in Nowhere USA.

They lost all of their material possessions, but they still had each other. They were hurt—seriously hurt, but they would start over. God would provide. They had witnessed His provision before, as He sustained them through several miscarriages, the adoption of their son, and the custody suit that followed when their son’s biological father tried to take him from them. The purpose of this book is to emphasize the importance of faith during the tough trials in the lives of believers.

The Vital Question by Nick Lane Pdf

Why is life the way it is? Bacteria evolved into complex life just once in four billion years of life on earth-and all complex life shares many strange properties, from sex to ageing and death. If life evolved on other planets, would it be the same or completely different? In The Vital Question, Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a cogent solution to conundrums that have troubled scientists for decades. The answer, he argues, lies in energy: how all life on Earth lives off a voltage with the strength of a bolt of lightning. In unravelling these scientific enigmas, making sense of life's quirks, Lane's explanation provides a solution to life's vital questions: why are we as we are, and why are we here at all? This is ground-breaking science in an accessible form, in the tradition of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species, Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene, and Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel.

Blown Away by Pastor Mick Fleming Pdf

‘It’s impossible to visit Church on the Street and not be deeply moved by the work the organisation does for those in need. It is an extraordinary place . . .’ HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES, from the Foreword ‘The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wanted to visit Pastor Mick to offer support and understand more about the work that takes place in Church on the Street.’ ED THOMAS, BBC NEWS An autobiography that is fast-paced, stirring and a powerful testament to the love of God, Blown Away tells the story of Pastor Mick Fleming. No conventional clergyman, Pastor Mick led a life of crime and addiction before being called by God to become a Christian minister. Brutally raped as a child, he was about to confide in his parents when the dreadful news came that his sister had died of a sudden heart-attack. Mick didn’t cry again for 30 years, masking his pain with drink and drugs and working as notorious underworld fixer - until the day a revelation of faith unravelled his world, and he found himself utterly ‘blown away’. Here he relates his incredible journey from hardened criminal to discovering who he truly is in Christ; from helping to destroy lives through drug dealing, to helping others and saving lives through selflessly serving those in poverty. Laying bare his struggles in full for the first time, including a failed attempt at suicide, Pastor Mick tells how sharing his pain has helped others who are suffering. Since that first call that set him on the road to becoming a Christian minister he has seen miracles happen – including being able not only to forgive, but to help, the man who ruined his life. Blown Away is a thought-provoking and inspiring Christian autobiography that offers insight into the violent underworld of crime, addiction and substance abuse in the UK and reveals the extraordinary power of faith, forgiveness and redemption. Pastor Mick’s story will move and inspire you on your own faith journey, and offer hope to those struggling with addiction, grief and suffering. Told with raw honesty and full of warmth and humanity, Blown Away is an amazing example of how God can help those even in the darkest places.

Contagion of Violence by National Research Council,Institute of Medicine,Board on Global Health,Forum on Global Violence Prevention Pdf

The past 25 years have seen a major paradigm shift in the field of violence prevention, from the assumption that violence is inevitable to the recognition that violence is preventable. Part of this shift has occurred in thinking about why violence occurs, and where intervention points might lie. In exploring the occurrence of violence, researchers have recognized the tendency for violent acts to cluster, to spread from place to place, and to mutate from one type to another. Furthermore, violent acts are often preceded or followed by other violent acts. In the field of public health, such a process has also been seen in the infectious disease model, in which an agent or vector initiates a specific biological pathway leading to symptoms of disease and infectivity. The agent transmits from individual to individual, and levels of the disease in the population above the baseline constitute an epidemic. Although violence does not have a readily observable biological agent as an initiator, it can follow similar epidemiological pathways. On April 30-May 1, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention convened a workshop to explore the contagious nature of violence. Part of the Forum's mandate is to engage in multisectoral, multidirectional dialogue that explores crosscutting, evidence-based approaches to violence prevention, and the Forum has convened four workshops to this point exploring various elements of violence prevention. The workshops are designed to examine such approaches from multiple perspectives and at multiple levels of society. In particular, the workshop on the contagion of violence focused on exploring the epidemiology of the contagion, describing possible processes and mechanisms by which violence is transmitted, examining how contextual factors mitigate or exacerbate the issue. Contagion of Violence: Workshop Summary covers the major topics that arose during the 2-day workshop. It is organized by important elements of the infectious disease model so as to present the contagion of violence in a larger context and in a more compelling and comprehensive way.

Blown Away by Herb Payson Pdf

“Anyone crazy enough to buy a boat deserves all the headaches he gets,” said Chuck. “What kind of boat are you looking for?” “Oh, something about 35 feet. We’re going to sail around the world.” “You poor kids,” he said sympathetically. At Middle age, Herb and Nancy Payson decided they needed a change. Why not give up life on shore, quit their in jobs in the smoky nightclubs of Los Angeles and take up the cruising life? In Sea Foam, their 36-foot ketch, the Payson’s and their large brood of teenage children cruised the Pacific for six and a half years. They experienced a certain amount of stark terror, but their delights far outbalanced the draw backs. Anyone seriously dreaming of setting off to sea should read Blown Away. Families who are already out there should make it bedtime reading as Herb shows the way families interact in the close quarters of a sailing boat at sea. But even those who find their ordered onshore existences good and fulfilling can hardly escape a twinge of envy while reading this amusing, instructive and wholly delightful adventure. This special 35th anniversary edition is enhanced with a foreword by Lin Pardey and Herb’s reflections on how cruising affected his children and his relationship with his determined, lifelong partner/wife Nancy.
