Living in and from the forests of Central Africa is intended first and foremost as a full-scale extension tool concerning NWFPs in Central Africa. Forests of Central Africa by Jean Pierre Vande weghe Pdf

At three times the size of France, Central African forests are the largest ropical forest mass after the Amazon and cover a large portion of the Congo Basin. Unlike the forests of Western Africa and Asia, these are still well preserved as in many massive yet little unaffected clumps natural processes continue unperturbed. These forests a crucially vital to countries in the area as well as populations who live off them. At a key moment in time for the history of these forests this book assesses the situation and attempts to answer a few basic questions: which forests are we taling about and where did they come from ? In what way are they different from the other tropical forests in the world? How do these forests's plants and animals live? Since when and by who are they inhabited ? What has been done to safeguard them? What are the major problems faced by theses forests today?

Habitat, Economy and Society in the Central Africa Rain Forest by Jan Vansina Pdf

Over 50 years ago, the renowned anthropologist Daryll Forde strongly advocated comparative anthropological studies. Professor Vansina argues that 50 years later, Forde's criticisms still apply despite both Forde's considerable intellectual legacy and an exponential increase in available information. Using the example of Central African peoples, Professor Vansina challenges the current scholarship of sociologists and anthropologists, and makes a compelling case for broad, historical, comparative studies.

Sustainable Wildlife Management - Unasylva 249 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

Wildlife management is the focus of considerable international debate because of its importance for biodiversity conservation, human safety, livelihoods and food security. Local people have been managing wildlife for millennia, including through hunting. Sufficient examples are presented in this edition to show that sustainable wildlife management is also feasible in the modern era. In some cases, a sustainable offtake – by local people, trophy hunters and legitimate wildlife traders – is provin g vital to obtain local buy-in to wildlife management and to pay the costs of maintaining habitats. No doubt the debate will continue on the best ways to manage wildlife; this edition of Unasylva is a contribution to that.

The Last Stand of the Gorilla by C. Nellemann,Ian Redmond,Johannes Refisch Pdf

Gorillas, the largest of the great apes, are under renewed threat across the Congo Basin from Nigeria to the Albertine Rift. Poaching for bushmeat, loss of habitat due to agricultural expansion, degradation of habitat from logging, mining and charcoal production are amongst these threats, in addition to natural epidemics such as ebola and the new risk of diseases passed from humans to gorillas. Alarmingly, parts of the region are experiencing intensified exploitation and logging of its forest, in some cases even within protected areas. In the DRC, many of these activities are controlled by militias illegally extracting natural resources such as gold, tin and coltan as well as producing charcoal for local communities, urban areas, camps for people displaced by fighting and sometimes even to communities across the border. These militias are located, motivated, armed and financed directly by this illegal extraction of minerals, timber and charcoal. A network of intermediaries including multinational companies or their subsidiaries, neighbouring countries and corrupt officials, are involved in the transportation and procurement of resources which stem from areas controlled by militia, or for which no legal exploitation permission exists
