Living in the State of Stuck by Marcia Joslyn Scherer Pdf

Assistive technology is radically changing the lives of people with disabilities. Here, Dr. Scherer sets the background for this radical transformation and discusses the implications of assistive technology for the lives of those born disabled, or who become disabled later in life. In the author's words, "this book shows, how, paradoxically, the more technology became available and the more free from limitations individuals became, the more stuck they seemed." A severe disability no longer need prevent a person from attaining the same educational, personal, and career goals as other adults. Scherer details assistive devices that enhance the quality of their lives, mobility, speech, and ability to work. But while these devices may enhance independence, Scherer explains how friends and relatives can better understand the personal issues and needs that arise from living with a disability and 'needing' these devices. This is a unique, well-researched account that will help anyone - disabled or not - deal with the physical and emotional aspects of adjusting to a life with assistive technology.

Living in the State of Stuck by Marcia Joslyn Scherer Pdf

Assistive technology has radically changed the lives of persons with disabilities, enabling them to work and perform in ways they might never have dreamed possible for themselves. But while these devices do improve physical capabilities, this functional gain is not synonymous with enhanced quality of life. The larger questions are too often ignored: What does the individual define as "rehabilitation success"? How does a given device contribute to fulfilling that person's needs? Are environmental factors -- from psychological resistance to insufficient training for use -- compromising the effectiveness of the device?

Stuck by Marc Sommers Pdf

Young people are transforming the global landscape. As the human population today is younger and more urban than ever before, prospects for achieving adulthood dwindle while urban migration soars. Devastated by genocide, hailed as a spectacular success, and critiqued for its human rights record, the Central African nation of Rwanda provides a compelling setting for grasping new challenges to the world's youth. Spotlighting failed masculinity, urban desperation, and forceful governance, Marc Sommers tells the dramatic story of young Rwandans who are “stuck,” striving against near-impossible odds to become adults. In Rwandan culture, female youth must wait, often in vain, for male youth to build a house before they can marry. Only then can male and female youth gain acceptance as adults. However, Rwanda's severe housing crisis means that most male youth are on a treadmill toward failure, unable to build their house yet having no choice but to try. What follows is too often tragic. Rural youth face a future as failed adults, while many who migrate to the capital fail to secure a stable life and turn fatalistic about contracting HIV/AIDS. Featuring insightful interviews with youth, adults, and government officials, Stuck tells the story of an ambitious, controlling government trying to govern an exceptionally young and poor population in a densely populated and rapidly urbanizing country. This pioneering book sheds new light on the struggle to come of age and suggests new pathways toward the attainment of security, development, and coexistence in Africa and beyond. The Angry Therapist by John Kim Pdf

Tackling relationships, career, and family issues, John Kim, LMFT, thinks of himself as a life-styledesigner, not a therapist. His radical new approach, that he sometimes calls “self-help in a shot glass” is easy, real, and to the point. He helps people make changes to their lives so that personal growth happens organically, just by living. Let’s face it, therapy is a luxury. Few of us have the time or money to devote to going to an office every week. With anecdotes illustrating principles in action (in relatable and sometimes irreverent fashion) and stand-alone practices and exercises, Kim gives readers the tools and directions to focus on what's right with them instead of what's wrong. When John Kim was going through the end of a relationship, he began blogging as The Angry Therapist, documenting his personal journey post-divorce. Traditional therapists avoid transparency, but Kim preferred the language of "me too" as opposed to "you should." He blogged about his own shortcomings, revelations, views on relationships, and the world. He spoke a different therapeutic language —open, raw, and at times subversive — and people responded. The Angry Therapist blog, that inspired this book, has been featured in The Atlantic Monthly and on NPR.

Living in Limbo: Stuck in the Middle by Gini Graham Scott Pdf

This book continues the saga of how the author dealt with the mortgage crisis by working with the banks, real estate brokers, and a bankruptcy attorney, while meeting with other middle income homeowners in trouble and with activist groups fighting foreclosures. It describes her experiences attending a foreclosure prevention workshop seeking a loan modification, and going to a foreclosure auction. It concludes with what the author learned from navigating the system, selling her home, renting in San Francisco, and turning her life around to gain success again. The book has gained growing support from individuals and groups active in this arena.

Stuck by Anneli Rufus Pdf

"The brilliant mind behind Party of One examines the striking social trend: people are stuck and they want to change, but..." (San Francisco Chronicle) In this book, Anneli Rufus identifies an intriguing aspect of our culture: Many of us are stuck. Be it in the wrong relationship, career, or town, or just with bad habits we can't seem to quit, we even say we want to make a change, but . . . Merging interviews, personal anecdotes, and cultural criticism, Stuck is a wise and passionate exploration of the dreams we hold dearest for ourselves-and the road to actually achieving them. When faced with the possibility of change, our minds can play tricks on us. We tell ourselves: I can't make it. Or, It's not worth the effort. How is it that in a time of unprecedented freedom and opportunity, so many of us feel utterly powerless and unsure? In this book, Rufus exposes a complex network of causes for our immobilization- from fear and denial to powerful messages in popular culture or mass media that conspire to convince us that we're helpless in the face of our cravings. But there can be a light at the end of the tunnel: Rufus also tells the stories of people who have managed to become unstuck and of others who, after much reflection, have decided that where they are is best. After all, she writes, "what looks to you like a rut, others might say is true absorption in a topic, a relationship, a career, a pursuit, a place. What looks to you like boredom, others call commitment. And even contentment." A brilliant glimpse into what truly motivates-or doesn't motivate-us, Stuck will inspire you to take a look at yourself in an entirely new light.

Stuck on Communism by Lewis H. Siegelbaum Pdf

This memoir by one of the foremost scholars of the Soviet period spans three continents and more than half a century—from the 1950s when Lewis Siegelbaum's father was a victim of McCarthyism up through the implosion of the Soviet Union and beyond. Siegelbaum recreates journeys of discovery and self-discovery in the tumult of student rebellion at Columbia University during the Vietnam War, graduate study at Oxford, and Moscow at the height of détente. His story takes the reader into the Soviet archives, the coalfields of eastern Ukraine, and the newly independent Uzbekistan. An intellectual autobiography that is also a biography of the field of Anglophone Soviet history, Stuck on Communism is a guide for how to lead a life on the Left that integrates political and professional commitments. Siegelbaum reveals the attractiveness of Communism as an object of study and its continued relevance decades after its disappearance from the landscape of its origin. Through the journey of a book that is in the end a romance, Siegelbaum discovers the truth in the notion that no matter what historians take as their subject, they are always writing about themselves.

Stuck by Dr. James Banks Jr. Pdf

During this time of a pandemic season and beyond, I hope to articulate a message in my book that you do not have to be stuck when you find out the root cause of your problem(s). Many situations arise because there are so many variations of sin used by the enemy to deceive people into thinking they have what they do not have. Today, not tomorrow, quit trying to please whoever it is that does not appreciate you on your job, church, school, college, team, family, relationship, or marriage. God has a door appointed for you to go through. Living in denial will delay/prohibit your mobility. Do not suppress your innermost feelings when you know you were once free, but now it feels like a trap within everyday life because of what somebody does or does not do. Life is meant to bring about trials and tribulations; however, if you can unravel the hidden truths, you are destined to be set free. Take charge and put action to your repetitive thoughts of what you constantly think about doing continually. At some point in life, you have to ask God for the revelation to say enough is enough. Otherwise, through time, you will accumulate multiple regrets which will cause you to be incarcerated from your choices. Today, please break free and move into your destiny. Do not bury yourself while you still live. Please act upon a solution, get away from denial, and make that long-awaited change that gets you away from being stuck. Hence, that level of immobility will penetrate your mind until you take action. After you conclude to take action, you will not have to look back anymore: ". . .Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord. The Lord will fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:13a-14 KJV). Remember, sometimes, if not all the time, you must take feasible action for change. Failure to do so could result in being STUCK: Living In Denial Will Prohibit Your Mobility.

No Place To Go by Lezlie Lowe Pdf

Adults don't talk about the business of doing our business. We work on one assumption: the world of public bathrooms is problem- and politics-free. No Place To Go: Answering the Call of Nature in the Urban Jungle reveals the opposite is true. No Place To Go is a toilet tour from London to San Francisco to Toronto and beyond. From pay potties to deserted alleyways, No Place To Go is a marriage of urbanism, social narrative, and pop culture that shows the ways — momentous and mockable — public bathrooms just don't work. Like, for the homeless, who, faced with no place to go sometimes literally take to the streets. (Ever heard of a municipal poop map?) For people with invisible disabilities, such as Crohn’s disease, who stay home rather than risk soiling themselves on public transit routes. For girls who quit sports teams because they don’t want to run to the edge of the pitch to pee. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen have protested bathroom bills that will stomp on the rights of transpeople. And where was Hillary Clinton after she arrived back to the stage late after the first commercial break of the live-televised Democratic leadership debate in December 2015? Stuck in a queue for the women’s bathroom. Peel back the layers on public bathrooms and it’s clear many more people want for good access than have it. Public bathroom access is about cities, society, design, movement, and equity. The real question is: Why are public toilets so crappy?
